1REVIEW OF TEAM PERFORMANCE
BELBIN’S TEAM ROLE AND INTERPERSONAL CONFLICT
Engineering and Environment, Northumbria University, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 8ST, UK
This paper aims to analyze the issue of overall performance of a team depending on the
role of the individual of the team. This paper has been analyzing the issue from the perspective
of the different models and approaches proposed. The research is based on the understanding of
role behavior and the author has taken up two prominent approaches. This study is highlighting
the same through the application of the Belbins research model. According to the author, it is to
be noted that the role of the individuals in a team is determined by certain characteristics and
their pattern of behavior is guided in a particular way. The author has disused about the
psychosocial perspective of the issue which portrays a different view of the same issue. This is
based on the understanding that the combination of roles within a team can lead to the process of
development of a unique relationship which can impact the productivity of the team. This paper
has concentrated the idea of the role of the individuals within that can positively or negatively
impact the team performance. However what is important here to note is that this paper has
highlighted the issue taking the Belbin’s model which is not reflective of the other nuances of the
issues. The idea of team performance is depended on the number of other variables and it is not
the centrality of the role of the individuals that impact the overall team performance.
This second paper is an analysis of the Belbin’s Team role in combination with the theory
of group dynamics. This discusses the mode of data collection process by the author who is
indicative of the findings that three parameters of leadership, evaluation and rewards for teams.
This paper has taken up the specific case of the military in order to understand the applicability

2REVIEW OF TEAM PERFORMANCE
of Belbin's theory in practice. This provides a holistic understanding of Belbin's model in the
personal experience of a soldier in the military. What is important to consider here is that this
work explains the feasibility of the theory by explaining it in the context of military operations.
However one of the weaknesses of the paper is the range of literature referred for the study to
conduct. In the case of academic communication, this paper has rightly applied all the required
skills for communicating the arguments. It also provides enough insights on the pieces of
evidence after the application of the role theory. In case of the research skills and the application
of the cognitive and intellectual skills, this paper is a well-developed research-based knowledge
that is portraying the different nuances of the issue . However in case of the conclusions derived
this paper results into technical terms and complexity of terminology. However it is not to deny
that it is a well-informed research paper based on the critical analysis of all the aspects of the
issue of role theory and individual role in team performance.
