An empirical analysis of the importance of teamwork on project management- the case of the
Canada healthcare system
2.0 Statement of purpose
Team-work is the enabler for smooth running of any project. Well managed resources with
the contribution of unique individual ideas can easily accomplish successful outcomes and
higher profits. In case of healthcare system, an interdisciplinary teamwork is very important
to serve best services to its patients (Rosen et al. 2018). Through this research work it will be
analyzed how a proper teamwork can employ the best practices of collaboration in Canada’s
healthcare system.
3.0 Background
With the increased number of populations all over the world, chronic diseases like cancer,
diabetes or heart diseases are also exponentially increasing. This is where Canada healthcare
systems are facing challenges and staffs are forced to adapt teamwork trainings and
techniques. As stated by (Aubry et al., 2011), working together can easily reduce the number
of medical errors and help to ensure patients’ safety. A patient’s well-being is taken care by
all the medical stuffs which ultimately empower the health care system to serve better each
and every day. That is why World Health Organization (WHO) recommended students to
learn different shades of teamwork as part of their preservice education, so that they will be
able to solve the clinical problems (Greer et al. 2020).
4.0 Significance
Health care system in Canada depends upon collaborations established with the private
sectors like Dentists, pharmacies etc. Therefore, in this case, astounding project management
with best cohesive efforts of each team member is the only way for successful treatment
(Gafa et al. 2018). The below mentioned aspects is indicating why this study is necessary to
understand the importance of team work in Canadian healthcare system:
5.0 Description of the project
Considering the research question mentioned above, it can be said that for this study, primary
research along with qualitative data analysis technique will be very helpful. In order to
discover accurate and clean data, the researcher thus decided an interview session with open
ended questions and answer method to beadopted with the medical stuffs who are in charge
of Canada Health Care system.
6.0 Literature Review
6.1 Improving responsiveness to changes
When all the healthcare personnel work as team, more ears and eyes on the board is capable
of developing mutual trust and understanding. When a patient needs immediate attention

because of sudden changes in health condition, an effective team can respond immediately by
allocating all the available resources in no time.
6.2 Reduction of medical errors
Internal team meetings help to provide necessary information and knowledge about the
patient amongst all the stuffs so that improved quality of care can be served to its patients.
Involvements of different specialists, cross check each other’s work which resulted in
reduction of medical errors (Weller and Civil, 2018). However, everybody should be clear
about their role through constant communication to diagnose and treat patients accurately.
Exchanging ideas can help to take strong preventive measures against the medical loopholes.
6.3 Improvements in work environments
Because of cohesion and trust amongst each other, healthcare team can foster a very positive
and strong work environment within the organization. Medical employees feel energetic and
this enthusiasm create personal satisfactions which leads to deliver exemplary medical
service.

Core Teams - Team leaders and members who are directly involved to take care of the
patients, should be a part of this core team. Physician, nurses, pharmacist and physiotherapist
make that unit based team where a patient has been treated under their observation.
Co-ordination Team - this team should be responsible for daily operational management
activities and managing the available resources for the core team -setup through constant co-
ordination (Kang, 2019).
Contingency Team: This team is formed for specific events or to respond immediately in case
of emergencies. From different core teams, the team members can join and make time limited
teams like quick response team, cardiac arrest team and disaster recovery team.
Ancillary services: it consists of domestic stuffs like cleaners, ward boys etc. they generally
provide time-limited, task specific and direct service to the patients.
Support services: The main duty is to create a clean, safe and comfortable environments for
the patients so that good health care experiences can be served.
Administration: This role includes the executive leadership of a facility who will be
accountable for 24 hours service for management and overall functions of the hospital. In
order to shape the culture for a teamwork, administrators are the ones who develop and
enforce policies, set exceptions for medical stuffs and define the culture of health care
organization (Sarwar and Devlin, 2017).
At the same time, the study performed by Mijakoski et al. (2018), has shown that the
Canadian Health Care system must give importance on team development, which is the key

in the above section. It has seen that adopting secondary analysis always gives in detailed
information to draw effective conclusion. This is the reason, the researcher intended to
perform data analysis using secondary analysis method.
