Is working in teams effective than working individually? United we stand and divided we
fall. The phrase of strength is unity has been used since when language was discovered. The
phrase helps in strengthening the notion that working in teams is better than working individually
and I don’t oppose the statement. Teams helps to ensure team work and help to create conducive
environment culture in the organization. In organizations I have worked in, teams enhance
sharing of ideas that lead to inventions and creativity that makes work easier (Tsay & Brady,
2012). Teams apart from accomplishing tasks faster also grants me and other employees a sense
of belonging. This in turn helps to satisfy my social needs as advocated for by Maslow in his
theory of motivation. This implies that teams motivate me and this will makes me satisfied and
lead to achievement of the organization goals and objectives.
What are influences of working in teams? Realizing the benefits of working in teams did
not require me to understand rocket science formula. Teams in organizations ensures that there
are differing perspectives and feedback. The wide perspectives enables me to have many ideas of
solving problems. This will enable the firm to have edge cutting solutions to the challenges and
this will lead to improved competitive advantages (Maynard, et al.2012). Creativity offered by
teams also influences me to opt using teams to perform operations in the organization. Team
work promotes productivity and efficiency. Team work helps me to reduce work pressure as
tasks are shared and this will make goals of the organization to be more attainable. This increases
job satisfaction, leading to high productivity in the organization. Teams also offers me learning
opportunities as we learn from each other. This helps to improve my knowledge and skills which
are essential factors in my career growth and development.
What are the factors that affect teams? Teams are important in our organizations but they
are affected by many factors. Some factors affect my team positively while others affect the team

negatively. The first factor is trust. Presence of trust in the team will enable the team to be very
effective as we appreciate the abilities of the other team members. My team members always
strive to accomplish the given roles so as to build trust in the team. The other factor is
communication. For effective team which I have worked with, team members frequently
communicate with each other (Farh, Seo, & Tesluk, 2012). Communication help us to share
ideas and information that leads to creation of conducive organizational culture and fosters
innovation in the organization. The other factor is effectively addressing change. Change is
inevitable in organizations I have been in. The leader should have mechanism of incorporating
change in the team without negatively affecting our motivation. If the above factors are not well
addressed, they will negatively affect the team and our tasks will not be performed as expected.
Poor leadership will negatively affects the teams I have worked with as we are not given well
articulated clear goals to accomplish and this will demotivate my team.
How can teams be improved? Teams in the organization can be improved by encouraging
open communication. In this case, such communication is informal. This will help my members
to socialize and interact with each other and this will lead to exchange of information on how to
perform tasks efficiently (Tabassi, Ramli, & Bakar, 2012). Building trust and respect will also
help to foster teams in the organization. The team leader should communicate the achievement of
the members of the organization so that members can trust each other because the team members
can be reliable when needed.
In conclusion, team work is very important to all the organizations as it helps to provide
many alternatives from where the organization can select the best ideas and implement them.
This will help to improve the competitive advantage of the organization.
