TOPIC
“To critically investigate on the technology and generation gap.”
Introduction
A generation gap occurs when there is a difference between the thoughts and viewpoints
of present generation and the previous generation which leads to misunderstandings and
complicated conversations. Generation gap can impact negatively on the relationships of people
as they cannot agree on a common ground which affects their ability to understand each other’s
view points and also impact on their social bonding. With the advancement in technology and
introduction to various gadgets and devices the generation gap has been increasing among
generations as the current generation is becoming fast with the use of technology while the
previous generation are finding it difficult to cope up with the growing advancements
(Andreoletti and Howard, 2018). With the increase in use of technology that makes work and
calculations very easy and fast there is an impact on their values and attitudes which increase the
generation gap. Generation X and millennial are thus finding it difficult to cope up in various
spheres of life like understanding personal relations, business related decisions, taking decisions
regarding various spheres of life etc. With the increase use of mobile phones, internet etc. the
generation gap among generations are increasing which needs to be addressed so that the society
can develop efficiently and the generations can survive effectively in the society. Technology has
made the younger generation more advanced and fast forward and has left behind the older
generation which increase their struggle to understand the use of technology in an efficient
manner. In businesses the use of technology has increased leaving behind the traditional methods
of doing business which has affected the self esteem of the old generations as they find
themselves incapable anymore in performing their roles efficiently. This has affected the way in
which business decisions are made. Thus, it can be said that technology has increased the
generation gap and has impacted the society with increasing the distance between the generations
and their ability to understand each other.
It is important that efficient and effective steps are taken so that these gaps can be bridged
which can help the old generation in coping up with the society. The millennial should take part
in making the generation X understand about how technology can be operated and used in
making their work easy and convenient (Anshari and Ahad, 2016). It is also important that the

use of traditional and technological methods are parallel applied in companies and while making
basic decisions so that the old generation can become comfortable of using technology in an
efficient manner. In this report a research is conducted so that the generation and technology gap
can be analysed which can help in determining ways through which the generation gap can be
bridged. This can help in building a more integrated society where the millennial and generation
X can breed together and understanding among them can be enhanced which can help in
increasing the ability of old generation to use advanced technology.
Background/context
With the advancement in technology and millennial being more dependent on its use so
that they can grow and develop in the society their values, attitudes and beliefs have changed and
has led to an increase in generation gap among old generation. Technology has changed the way
in which world operates and the way it used to operate in generation X which has created a
barrier between the generations leading to generation gap. Recently digital technology has
increased the cultural and societal shift which causes generational disagreement. With the
increased use of smart phones, tablets, social media etc. the ability of younger generation to
connect to people has changed (Filippaios and Benson, 2016). Development in technology has
also influenced the way in which work is done in an organisation which has increased the
flexibility of work thereby increasing the convenience of working. Increased use of technology
thus creates an impact on the thinking, values and beliefs of new generation which creates a
barrier in their ability to understand the old generation often leading to disagreements.
Innovations and advancements in technology has improved the way of working which in contrast
with the traditional methods of doing work which affects the ability of older generation in
understanding the rapidly changing technology. This generation gap is needed to be addressed so
that the gap can be bridged and strong bonding can be created among generations so that they
can learn to use technology which can help them in better coping up with the changing society
and the beliefs of generations. It is also important that the old generation people are taught on
how to use the technological tools and techniques which can help in increasing their convenience
of living so that their living standards can improve. It will also help in increasing the bonds
among the generations so that at work and in life the generations can live together in an efficient
manner creating a healthy society (Fiott, 2017).

Research methodology
Research methods: It is a specific procedure which helps in analysing and collecting the
various set of data related to the research topic (Jensen, 2017). It is classified into quantitative
and qualitative research methods. Quantitative research method largely emphasizes on the
statistical and analysis of the numerical data with the use of questionnaire, surveys, polls, etc. On
the other hand, Qualitative research methods is very useful as it helps in interpreting the various
variables of the data by gaining in depth knowledge with the help of content analysis, focus
group, research of case study, ethnographic research, etc. In this research qualitative method will
be used by researcher as it will help in gathering information related to the research topic so that
researcher can interpret the information and achieve the objectives of research.
Research philosophy: It is phenomenon according to which the information related the
study must be gathered, interpreted and used. It is classified into positivism and interpretivism
philosophy (Quinlan and et.al., 2019). Positivism approach is useful as it adheres with the
knowledge which is based on actual facts with the sense of observation. Moreover,
interpretivism philosophy understands the key elements and variables of the study by engaging
human interest within the subject matter. In this research interpretivism research approach will
be used as it helps in effectively interpreting the qualitative data which is collected from various
sources so that effective conclusions can be drawn based on researcher’s interpretation.
Research design: It is an overall strategy which helps in combining all the components of

Research approach: It is a plan or procedure with the set of broad assumptions by setting
broad set of assumptions. It helps in addressing the nature of the specific research problem. It is
classified into inductive and deductive approach. Inductive approach starts with an appropriate
reasoning which has been proposed at the end (Almalki, 2016). It is useful in generating new set
of theories. On the contrary, deductive approach results in formulating hypothesis in order to test
the validity of the specific theory. In this research inductive research approach will be used
which can help in drawing a hypothesis based on the conclusions that are drawn from the data
collected for research.
Data collection: It is an appropriate measure as it is very useful in measuring and gathering
the various set of information in order to gain wider set of perspective associated with the
research questions (Kumar, 2019). It is classified into primary and secondary source of data
collection. Primary data are first- hand information with surveys, questionnaires, etc. On the
other hand, secondary data collection is information upon which investigation has been carried
out earlier. This can be collected through journals, books, newspapers, governmental
departments, manuals, etc. Data collection will be done by the way of questionnaire which will
contain certain structured questions which will be asked to a sample population so that their
views can be collected regarding the topic. This can help in gathering the number of responses
based on which interpretation can be done which can be analysed using pie-charts, graphs, bar

equal chance to get selected within the sample size. It includes random sampling, cluster
sampling, systematic sampling, etc. On the contrary, non- probabilistic sampling method such as
quota sampling, purposive sampling etc. where members from large population are selected on
the random basis. In this research non- probabilistic sampling method will be used in order to
gather data from population. This method can help in gathering unbiased information from a
sample population so that high quality of results can be achieved.
Data Analysis: It is a procedure of transforming and cleaning the data collected in order
to discover the useful set of information related to the subject matter. It is classified into SPSS
analysis and thematic analysis. SPSS analysis is useful because it helps in predicting the complex
set of data which has large information (Johnson and Christensen, 2019). On the other hand,
thematic analysis helps in interpreting the various themes and variables of study to gain
conclusive results.
Data analysis and collection
Research methods: It is classified into quantitative and qualitative research methods. The
researcher of the study will select qualitative research methods to critically determine the
generation and technology gap.
Research philosophy: It is classified into positivism and interpretivism philosophy. The
researcher of the study will select interpretivism philosophy to effectively evaluate the area
associated with the generation gaps.
Research design: It is classified into exploratory and descriptive research design. The
researcher of the study will select descriptive research design
Research approach: It is classified into inductive and deductive approach. The researcher of
the study will select inductive approach.
Data collection: It is classified into primary and secondary source of data collection. The
researcher of the study will select primary and secondary source of data collection in order to
critically investigate on the technology and generation gap.
Sampling: It is classified into probabilistic and non- probabilistic sampling methods. The
researcher of the study will select random probabilistic sampling method where 20 people of
Generation X will be selected from Australia.
