Position Essay 1
Topic: Is Technology Really Making Us Less Social?
Technology is one of most important part of the human life as it helps in performing and
everything by them. The purpose of this paper is to enlighten the reader regarding the analysis on
the topic that whether technology is making people less social or not. There have been many
notions spread regarding the fact that technology has started to reduce the person to person
communication in the environment and it has eliminated the closeness between people. Resulting
in which various phrases like technology addict, technology nerds came into existence. Further,
technology is a resource that can be used by people in both good and bad ways. The below
mentioned position paper will guide the reader about the fact that whether technology is actually
making people less social or is it just a myth.
Considering the fact that technology plays a huge role in the lives of people and it consumes a
major part of their day resulting to which they become less social in the environment. For
instance, if a teenager boy plays in the ground every evening from 5 pm to 7 pm, but in that time
that boy is given his mobile phone to play games or use social media websites then he will forget
playing in the garden and will sit at home and use mobile phones only. This is one significant
example stating that technology affects the lives of people and make them less social in the
environment. Instead of playing in the garden or talking to folks, people nowadays prefer sitting
at a quiet place and playing games. The fact is true that technology is destroying people in wrong
ways. It is changing the lives and behaviour of people and turning them in the wrong direction.
People in the environment should use technology as an aid to work and they should not entirely
depend on it for their entertainment or any other work (Pierce 1367-1372).
Nowadays, actual interaction with people has been replaced by various web series and mobile
games. As soon as people get time, they look to a quiet place to watch something on their phone.
Even in a crowd, people use iPod etc. to stay away from them and listen to music. Earlier, people
used to meet each other and talk in person, however; now that has shifted to just online texting,
as it is more approachable and feasible for them. People can chat all day long but they cannot
actual meet that person and talk in real. This is way technology can caused to the lives of people
and made them non-social in the environment. Use of technology eliminates the need of
introverts to feel that they should communicate with someone and reduce their hesitation as well.
Use of technology is reducing the curiosity of people to get to know about the behaviour of

different people and talk to them instead they have started become mean and self-centred. Most
of the time of people revolves technology only due to which they have become addicted to it. It
should be noted that humans evolve, technology also changes and according to the changing
technology, people of also irrespective of analysing the fact whether the change is good or bad
for them. Traffic from the playgrounds has reduced and shifted to cyber hubs and gaming spots.
Use of technology is making people unsocial, although applications like Facebook, Instagram is
connecting people together but people do not show their different face on social media. Chatting
on such platforms does not count in talking and communicating with people.
Use of technology eliminates the need for the people to make new friends and communicate with
each other. People have become addicted towards technology, it has become their only source of
entertainment and they do not even wish to change it. Technology makes people comfortable in
their current situation and do no develop the need within them to develop changes as well.
Technology ruins the lives of people by making me comfortable within four walls and dissolving
their need to talk to another or person or even goes out and takes fresh air as well. Lastly, it
should be noted that the fact is true that technology is making people social, technology has
made the lives of people advanced through which a large part of their life gets affected and they
become less inclined towards the real world and more inclined towards the fictional characters
(Hussain).
Rebutting the above mentioned notion, it should be noted that technology cannot be held entirely
responsible for making people anti- social. Technology is a gift to mankind and it depends upon
people that how they use it for their benefit. The technological advancement comes up with
various benefits and drawback as well, thus if people make use of negative aspect of technology
then it is not the fault of technology that it is bad for people, instead people are bad for
themselves. In fact, it should be noted that technology plays a vital role in connecting people in
the worldwide market. Technology gives opportunity to people to talk to the people who are far
beyond their reach. For instance, if a person is not well and they are spending their time alone at
their home, so they can make use of technology to learn new things, entertain them and connect
to their friends as well.
Thus, instead of saying that technology is making people anti-social, it should be said that
technology is making people closer and helping them to evolve positively as well. Also it is

obvious that people get addicted to any new change in the environment but technology is not the
reason of making people non-social instead people stopping interacting with each other because
of their mentality differences, technology only gives them a reason distract themselves from
other things. Video call, conference call are invested through technology in the environment so
as to benefit the level of communication and help people to talk to other who are physically away
from them, then how is this possible that technology makes people non-social (Vaidhyanathan).
Thus, in the limelight of above mentioned notions, it should be noted that it is strongly believed
that yes technology affects the interest level of people in the environment and make them
antisocial as well. Technology provides various distraction to the people in the environment due
to which most of their time is invested using them only resulting to which they do not get to
restore the capacity or time to talk to any other person in the environment. Technology has
started changing habits of people in a wrong way due to which level of communication is
affected and people start to find peace in their own company. Lastly, it is important to use
technology but to some extent. People should not mix their real world with artificial world and
its people.
