TELELINK CASE STUDY ANALYSIS
Introduction
The telecommunication business company Telelink situated in Auckland needs to adapt
the cloud computing techniques and tools and the various processes and process of adaptation is
also described in this report. The company Telelink is a growing company and the chief
information officer is well aware of the cloud computing adaptation benefits and also the storage
facility that is needed by the company s it is in its growing stage in Auckland. The company
Telelink is regarded as one of the most leading Telecommunications Company in the region and
it is also in its growing stage. The cloud computing has become very much inevitable for the
information technology and telecommunication field and thus it also provides huge data storing
capacities to the small and medium scale companies in the domain (Almorsy, Grundy and Müller
2016). The cloud based system upon adaptation provides the companies with a better storage
facility when compared to the local data centers that are located in the company premises and the
cloud based systems also provide better flexibility and adoptability.
The case study provided here depicts the current IT infrastructure of the company
Telelink and also signifies the need for the adaptation to the cloud based servers and storage
facility and thus this adaptation process will eventually benefit the performance of the company.
The employees and the current infrastructure of the company Telelink should be well adaptive in
nature and thus the cloud based system should also support them and the chief information
officer should also choose the most appropriate service model for the company (Avram 2014).
The report also describes the investment cost and strategic options that might be needed in
adopting such a cloud based model and also the methods that must be used for the up gradation
purpose and the existing infrastructure of the company Telelink is also described.

TELELINK CASE STUDY ANALYSIS
Discussion
A. Telelink As-Is Environment
Background and Underlying technology: The organization Telelink is the leading
telecommunication company in the New Zealand and the business process associated with the
company is the age old traditional process of local datacenters and with the help of these
datacenter the company is providing its services to the customers of New Zealand. The services
that are offered by the Telelink are provision of receptions, taking orders for the services and
also mailing out the information kits along with 0800 services. The several other services that are
provided by the company Telelink are customer retention, generation of lead, management of
database and also provision of some technologies including texting, email and internet services.
Therefore, current business process that is followed by the organization can be referred to as the
“As-Is” environment of Telelink. The services that are mentioned above are the part of the
present operational structure of the company Telelink.
The underlying technologies that exist in the company Telelink is the general internet
telecommunications technology followed by other telecommunications company in Auckland
and thus the company Telelink also follows the general guidelines. The 0800 service that is
provided by the company Telelink for its customers, enables the customers to give calling
support to them in a specific number without any charges, the charges of such calling are taken
up by the company itself. The company’s managers and supervisors can also determine the
amount of the time that the customers are spending on such calls by monitoring and controlling
the calling function (Pearson 2013). The company offers the customers with effective Internet
and telecommunication features which enables them to exchange data and also to avail the
different service related to the telecommunication field. The various security problems and the

interruption in the service of the company due to heavy workload in their database has also been
discussed in the report. The entire operation process of the company Telelink is running on
manual processes handled by the employees of the company and thus the officials are thinking to
upgrade to cloud based platform to enhance its services to the customers.
Total cost of ownership including cost of Labor:
The total cost of ownership includes the assets that has been purchased by the company
and also the operational and management costs and handling costs of the assets and products of
the company. The ownership costs also includes the costs required to deliver the services,
operation, training of the employees, installation costs and also the safety and health of the
people working in the organization. The labor cost in also included in the total ownership cost of
the company. The following is the total cost of ownership for the company Telelink:
Entities Costs (per month)
Purchasing assets (Remaining value) NZ$ 25,000
Managing the assets (Initial cost) NZ$ 15,000
Operation cost NZ$ 3,000
Maintenance cost NZ$ 10,000
Labor cost per hour NZ$ 1,190
Training cost per employee NZ$ 30

TELELINK CASE STUDY ANALYSIS
The total cost of ownership (tco) of the company Telelink can be calculated by this formula:
TCO (Total cost of ownership) = Initial cost + operation cost + maintenance cost + production
cost + downtime cost – remaining value
= NZ$ {15000 + 3000 + 10000 + (1190 * 2000) + (30 * 2000) - 25000}
= NZ$ 2,443,000.
Therefore, the total cost of the ownership of the company Telelink is NZ$ 2,443,000 per month.
Governance and organization:
The telecommunications company in New Zealand must abide by the certain government
policies, however, the company Telelink is a medium scale company and thus the company is
not much associated with the government policies. However, the company should have a clear
and effective plan to implement the planning of governance. This will create a standardized rules
and regulations for the company Telelink and also the generalized perception of these rules will
help in the performance benefit of the company (Khalil, Khreishah and Azeem 2014). The
company Telelink has also maintained the several governance policies in the system according to
the government policy and thus the proper business ethics and standardization of moral values is
maintained.
This is the reason for the adaptation of the various government policies by the medium
scale company such as Telelink and due to the implementation of the cloud based services in the
telecommunication company the various standardization process can also be done. It would
provide the customers as well as the employees a better data securing and optimizing technique
and thus the implementation of the cloud based system in the company Telelink will benefit the

performance of the organization as a whole. The SOA architecture, if implemented will provide a
huge scope for the success and enhancement of performance in the public cloud architecture.
Risk management: The risk management in the above case study can be referred to as the risks
that are associated with the telecommunications company and also the steps that are taken by
adapting the cloud based system and whether mitigation of the current problems can be done
with the cloud implementation (Chou 2013). It is also necessary to take steps according to the
severity and priority of the risks and proper mitigation should also be done. There are also
several other factors that are related to this case are the data security, cyber-attacks, bandwidth
cost and the performance.
B. Appropriate cloud solution and deployment model
The cloud service that should be chosen for the implementation in the Telelink should
well planned and structured as because it will directly affect the performance of the company.
The perfect cloud service provider can be selected by the company officials by analyzing and
verifying the following criteria of the various cloud service providers in the global market place.
The process includes identifying the cloud service provider’s certification and the procedures of
the selected organization (Carlin and Curran 2013). The cloud provider’s service roadmap also
needs to be checked before implementation. The several business policies, security of data and
other governance policies of the cloud providers should be verified before implementation. The
SLA, commercial contract and dependencies of the cloud service provider should also be
checked and verified before implementing the cloud based platform (Garg, Versteeg and Buyya
2013). However, the main factor here is the performance and reliability of the cloud service
provider, which must be checked well in advanced before implementing.

TELELINK CASE STUDY ANALYSIS
Overview of the selected model:
From the above discussions and criteria, the amazon AWS should be selected by the
organization for providing the cloud based services. The amazon AWS is referred as one of the
most secured cloud service providers and will be perfect for the operation al structure of the
company Telelink. The business structure of the company telelink would be enhanced due to the
presence of the amazon AWS as it would provide database storage system, computing power and
content delivery within time (Gorelik 2013). The cloud computing service of Amazon AWS is a
hybrid type of cloud computing service and it also provides a cloud storage facility which will be
highly beneficial for the company Telelink as because their local datacenters will not be
overloaded anymore and they can provide their customers better service. The management and
control of the amazon AWS is also easy and user friendly and the company officials can also
monitor the entire activity of the company (Ali, Khan and Vasilakos 2015). The resources and
the application health of the amazon AWS can also be monitored by the company. The AWS is a
very secured cloud service provider and thus the important credentials of the company will be
secured. The AWS has also some potential tools which identifies many threats to the system on
their own and also checks the vulnerabilities within the system that might be affected. The AWS
is also equipped with modern big data and artificial intelligence tools that help to understand and
use the cloud services in a proper may and also to utilize it up to its full potential.
C. Critical assumptions and constraints
The adaptation to the cloud based servers of the company Telelink has certain
assumptions and constraints with the amazon AWS system. The assumptions would be the fact
that would be brought to the employees and customers of the company upon implementation of
the AWS system. The assumptions and constraints that have to be made are – effectiveness of

TELELINK CASE STUDY ANALYSIS
cost of the system, the business flexibility and enhancement speed of the business, enhancement
of security and compliance and also the reliability and time needed for recovery from any
disaster (Jain 2016). The amazon AWS has also certain constraints which must be followed
while implementing the amazon AWS in the company Telelink. The general limitations that exist
in a cloud computing server is also applicable in the amazon AWS implementation.
D. Methods to migrate from the on-premise server in to cloud based system
The various management capabilities and present IT infrastructure of the company
Telelink will be tested upon implementation of the cloud computing model. The design
and service oriented architecture of the selected company also plays an important role in
the migration process to cloud computing. The implementation process of cloud
computing in an organization also depends on the current process management and
operational IT technologies of the company (García-Galán, Trinidad, Rana and Ruiz-
Cortés 2016). The migration process that is to be used in this case is the lift-and-shift
technique which will help in the adaption of the cloud computing model. The cloud
computing model that is to be selected must be based in the New Zealand itself or it
should be an international cloud service provider as because the company Telelink is
based in New Zealand.
The Telelink being a call center requires application level integration while
implementing the cloud based system. The loss of data in the present infrastructure of the
company can be prevented by taking back up of the data in any external storage devices
before upgrading to the cloud based services. The up gradation process should not affect
the customers or clients of the company and thus managers of company should look after
the speed of up gradation process (Jamshidi, Pahl, Chinenyeze and Liu 2015). The

virtualization and standardization of the implemented model within the organization
should also be maintained by the supervisors while the implementation procedure. The
security issues of the implemented model should also be checked by the managers and
supervisors. The existing functional and infrastructural design of the company must also
considered before updating into the cloud based services.
E. Quantity Cost, Investment and strategic opportunity
The implementation cost of the Amazon AWS is very much minimal which amounts to
about $1 -$3 per month if the services of it are availed by the company Telelink and the
name of the particular service is Free Tier limits. The static website hosting cost per
month can be around $ 0.50 including the implementation cost. The storage cost should
also be considered in this case which about $ 0.2 per GB of storage is for first 50 TB and
it keeps increasing with the increase in the storage amount per TB in a monthly basis
(Singh and Dutta 2018). The total investment cost of the company telelink is near about $
5,000 including the various factors. The strategic opportunity that needs to be considered
for the Amazon AWS implementation is the end to end approach and the security factor
also plays an important role as because
F. Validation of the business case using two indicators
The validation of the business case using the two indicators are to be done and the two
indicators are the return on investment and the quality of services.
Return on Investment:
The return on investment is the ratio between the net profit and the investment made and
the company Telelink can evaluate its performance and the decision made for adapting to

cloud based services (Tsalis, Theoharidou and Gritzalis 2013). The ROI thus would be very
much beneficial for the company Telelink in the process of implementation of the cloud
based system replacing their old system.
Figure 1: CBA for the AWS implementation
Quality of services:
The quality of services is an important indicator by which the officials of the company
Telelink can control and maintain their superior quality of service for their customers and thus
the quality of the cloud service provider plays a vital role in the company Telelink. The quality
of service in the company Telelink about the implementation of the cloud based services is
scheduling, admission control and resource provision (Abdelmaboud, Jawawi, Ghani, Elsafi and
Kitchenham 2015). The resource management of the data centres is also maintained by the
scheduling and thus a contract between the service providers and the clients is also made known

as the Service Level Agreement (SLA). Thus the increased quality of service can be achieved by
the implementation of the cloud based services (Ardagna et al. 2014).
G. Recommendation according to the business case study
The below recommendations can be made by analyzing the above case study and also by
studying the cloud computing deployment models –
The company Telelink will be able to make progress and enhancement in their
business with the adaptation to the cloud based servers as because the company will
no longer be fully dependent on the existing local datacenters of the company which
remains overloaded due to the excess amount of workload in them. The managers and
supervisors of the company must keep in mind the investment factor while
implementing the cloud based model in the company. The application optimization,
alignment of the business process and government policy are the few transformation
impacts that must be considered while adapting to the cloud based servers (Rosário et
al. 2018). The Government of New Zealand changes every 3 year and they have their
own government IT policies which must be considered while choosing and adapting
the cloud based service. The application optimization should also be made in order to
adapt to the new cloud based environment and perform the business activities without
any problem.
The security issues and risks that are related while adapting to a cloud based services
should also be kept in mind by the company authorities, however, the necessary
investment and up gradation process must be done by the company as the adaptation
to the cloud based services will give them a necessary return of investment and it will

also give client satisfaction and superior quality of service to them (Syed, Musa,
Rahman and Jan 2015).
The local datacenters that the company Telelink current is currently using is very
much overloaded due to the heavy workflow in hem and thus they are not secure and
flexible enough to the clients or the employees. Thus the company should consider
the fact of adaptation to the cloud based servers and thus the AWS being a user-
friendly model is selected for the company Telelink.
Conclusion
The above business case study emphasizes on the problems that the telecommunication
company Telelink is facing about the local datacentres and their need and process of adaptation
to the cloud based servers which might resolve their problem. Due to overload in their local
datacentres the company’s service towards their customers are getting hampered and thus the
service of the company should be migrated to a cloud platform service. The cloud services that is
chosen here is the amazon AWS and the various characteristics and factors with the migration to
the AWS is discussed here. From the above discussions it can be concluded that the selected
cloud service provider amazon AWS is the most appropriate one for the company Telelink in
terms of data security and other maintenance perspectives and thus the company Telelink should
adapt to the amazon AWS which will give their customers a better service and also it will be
beneficial for the company Telelink. The return on investment and quality services that the
company will face on adaptation has also been described and the various processes associated
with it. The amazon AWS is thus selected for the organization and it can also be said that it must

be adapted by the company so that the existing problem of the company can be mitigated and the
customers can also have the best service provided from them.
