Discuss what you personally learnt about the case study that was new knowledge or
understanding for you.
The study has enabled me to know and understand the importance of preserving the
common good. Though this concept was very new to me the study helped me to gain knowledge
on the entire topic and its significance. Since the era of the ancient Greek, the concept of
common goods indicates that certain goods such as justice, security area achievable by
collaborative actions, CSR (followed by the business organizations) and active participation in
the public welfare services. The whole idea of common good is the denial of the fact that society
should be formed of isolated individual unknown to each other. I have realized that the idea
reinforces and intensifies the fact that the members of society should live for the society more as
citizens rather than living for the individual selves (Etzioni 2014). In terms of the business sector
it can be said that organizational behavior does influence the society in many ways and their
contributions are much necessary in this regard, contributing to the common good is a broader
aspect than simply maintaining the corporate social responsibility.
I have received deeper insight into what are the fields of common good where people can
and should contribute in many ways. The Telstra company (Telstra Corporation Limited) is an
ideal telco in this respect and I have become inspired by the way they positively contribute to the
well- being of the community. They try their best to build an economically, technologically and
environmentally healthy Australia in future being the largest telecommunication company of the
country which is essential. First of all, they support the community by conducting Award
programs, sponsorship programs and many other programs (telstra.com 2018). The Telstra
Business Women’s Awards and Telstra Australian Business Awards are among the best ones to
acknowledge truly talented women, entrepreneurs, business people and innovators. They have an

excellent history of sponsoring Australia’s most celebrated arts and sports institutions like the
National Gallery of Victoria and tribal sports of NBL, AFL as well as Netball. Telstra
Foundation runs a countrywide program to support talented children by funding them with their
contributions. Their Disability Equipment program has also introduced a range of products for
the disabled people who find difficulty in accessing telephone services(telstra.com 2018). Their
Health strategies especially for the indigenous people of Australia is truly remarkable. In the
rural and remote areas of Australia they have made healthcare access extremely easy.
Their environment strategies in formed of five priorities. Climate change resilience,
controlling carbon emission, resource efficiency, low-carbon economic development and
environment management. Since Australia is prone to sudden bushfires, floods and other natural
disasters each year, the company has increased the employment rates of Australia up to greater
extents. Telstra have been placed 6th in the second Australian Business in the Community
Corporate Responsibility Index with 90.21 percent scores for participating in the CSR values and
ethics. The Telstra people donated $1, 561, 280.27 and raised funds for the Tsunami of Indian
Ocean disaster(telstra.com 2018). They have also received awards for their excellent people
management in their company by supporting ‘mental health’ in the workplace. Telstra provided
more than $160 million to support low-income Australians via a list of concessions, products and
services. Their environment sustainability programs and practices are significant in preserving
the common good of society.

the help of internet and researched on the company, their activities, operations and achievements.
While researching on the topic of common good, CSR and their relation to the business world, I
have come across a range of worth-reading topics which has undoubtedly enriched my
knowledge and analyzing ability. The oral presentation helps to develop the communication
skills to give presentation at symposia, other meetings and conferences in future. The oral
presentation task has made me more flexible, innovative, active, creative in decision making and
improved my communication skills and collaboratively working capabilities. My co-mates were
equally supportive and understanding as my professors and overall it was a wonderful experience
to get involved in this task.

The Telstra company has contributed to the rise and development of the society and community
in many ways. There are certain aspects focusing on which the telco company can enhance the
common good. The company already conducts kinds’ scholarship programs to acknowledge and
support talented kids but a better outlook at the educational system can distinctly change the
scenario (Altbach 2015). The aboriginal people of Australia are the true treasure of the country.
Along with the health programs in the remote lands the company can also involve in an
educational mission for the aboriginal children (Altbach 2015). It can be assumed that it will
change their way of life. Another good step would be by conducting women safety programs
which is a big issue today. In those programs the women should be taught self-protection skills
which will be a remarkable initiative on the part of the company.
