A British multinational general and groceries merchandise retailer is known as Tesco plc
trading. It is based in Welwyn Garden City of Hertfordshire, United Kingdom (UK). It was
established in 1919. The founder of the Tesco is Jack Cohen (Tesco.com 2019). He started the
company as a group of market stalls. In 1931, the first Tesco first opened in Burnt Oak, Barnet.
The company is listed on the London Stock Exchange. In the world, the retailing company stood
as 9th largest retailer in terms of revenue as of 2019. Moreover, in the world it is also placed as 3rd
largest retailer in terms of gross revenue as of 2019. In 2019, Tesco generated total revenue of
63,911 pound million. It operates as convenience shop, superstore, hypermarket and
supermarket. The company has its strong presence in the groceries market of the UK, Thailand,
Hungary and Ireland. It possesses almost 28.4% of the groceries market in the UK. The shops of
Tesco spread over seven countries across Europe and Asia. Moreover, Tesco operates in the
countries such as Malaysia, Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovak Republic, Thailand, India,
Ireland and UK (Ismail 2017). It initiated its global expansion from 1990. Then the company
operated in eleven countries of the world. However, it stopped operating in the United States
(US) from 2013. Moreover, Tesco introduced diversification of the business from the 1960. It
diversified its business into retailing areas includes toys, internet services, clothing, financial
services, petrol, furniture, software, electronics, telecoms, and books.
