TESCO’s Sales Performance
Tesco has unveiled its best quarterly sales performance for seven
years after keeping a lid on price rises and pushing its fresh
food range.
Britain’s biggest retailer reported that UK like-for-like sales had
lifted by 2.3pc during the 13 weeks to May 27, helped by
particularly strong growth in its fresh produce.
Like-for-like food sales - at shops open for more than a year -
rose 2.7pc during the quarter, compared to the year
before. Dave Lewis, chief executive, said that putting up shop
prices would be a “last resort” for the supermarket.

Annual Performance of TESCO
Tesco has reported its first year of sales growth in the UK since
2010, but good news for its vast domestic chain has been
overshadowed by the stormy outlook for future trading as the
weakness of sterling pushes up food prices.
The UK’s largest retailer was the biggest faller in the FTSE 100
on Wednesday, with the shares finishing down more than 5%,
despite beating City expectations with a 30% rise in group
operating profit to £1.28bn in the year to the end of February.
Within that figure, the UK business saw profit surge 60% to
£803m.
