INTRODUCTION
Business refers to the efforts and actions taken by companies to manufacture and sell
their products or services in the market for enhancing their profitability. Business could be
operated by profit making organisation or non-profit companies (Chi and et. al., 2019). There are
various internal and external environmental factors that could influence the schemes and
decisions of companies. For the purpose of this report, Tesco which is a UK based retailer
company and has its headquarter in Welwyn Garden City, England. The report mainly focuses on
positive and negative impacts of environmental factors on the company. The next section covers
some challenges faced by organisation and how it is responding to such challenges in relation to
its business strategy.

The positive and negative impacts of the PESTLE environmental factors
PESTLE analysis is a marketing tool used to identify external environmental factors
impacting the strategies and decisions of companies. PESTLE stands for Political, Economic,
Social, Technological, Legal and Environmental factors. It helps management department of a
company with situational information about the direction in which an organisation is going, its
positioning, targets, growth and any risks involved which could decrease its productivity (López
López, 2017). In context of Tesco, the positive and negative impacts of PESTLE environmental
factors are as follows:
Political factors:
Government schemes and laws such as tax policies, trade reforms, political stability and
businesses regulations of a country that influences the working of companies comes under this
factor. In respect to Tesco, as the company operates its business on global level it has to follow
rules and regulations implemented by government of different countries. Political stability of a
country provides better opportunities for company to trade.
Positive impacts: The company keeps a transparent environment in its political actions

factors that influences the working of companies (Kesseli, 2017). In case of Tesco, these factors
mostly supports costs, prices, demands and profits. Therefore, it must keep itself aware of any
modifications in these schemes such as in taxation or any other element which might impact the
approachability of finance.
Positive impacts: Tesco created a great employment for people even in COVID-19
pandemic. For instance, it employed almost 16,000 extra workers in the pandemic to support

Negative impacts: As people are becoming more aware about the benefits of organic
foods and are shifting towards it, the company has to manage these changes as well as should try
to capture large customer base by fulfilling this demand.
Technological factors:
New technologies such as artificial intelligence or robotics that are continuously
emerging in the world which influence strategies and planning of organisations comes under this

inexpensive retailers.
Even though sales increases during COVID-19 but the company faces a sharp down fall
in overall profit after investing about £900m to keep going trading continuously at the
time of pandemic. The company also encountered a big loss of almost £175m at Tesco
bank. The share price also reduced by 2.65% to 225.96p in primal trading (Tesco counts

Tesco also have to face a legal trouble for accounting crime and also for misleading their

fish, fruit, beef and pork which helped it to attract cost-conscious buyers who did not earlier
valued offerings of Tesco. It shifted from traditional marketing to digital marketing and spend
almost 30% of its marketing revenue on it which resulted into achieving business targets more

Human Resources: This department works effectively in the times of crisis such as

purchasing habits of customers and could deliver better services to them. The company
must also install some strong technology to protect against cyber-attacks.
To grasp new opportunities and identify threats, the company needs to continuously plan
and adopt advanced techniques which might help in providing excellent services to
customers.
As political policies have power to change the working style and might impact the
businesses, the selected organisation must be always ready to deal with domestic and
global political changes.
As company operated its businesses in various countries, their government policies might
impact Tesco, so it must understand the schemes and laws of different nations that the
selected organisation needs to stay in each country.
CONCLUSION
Business is a procedure of making money through producing, selling and distributing
products or services in the marketplace. From the above report, it could be observed that
businesses could be affected by several macro environmental factors which might also decrease

faced many challenges while running its business in various countries and took several steps to
overcome these challenges. The external environmental factors also impacted the organisation in
positive and negative ways. In the end it could be concluded that while operating a business

businesses.
