INTRODUCTION
Business functions can be defined as activities that are carried out by the organisations in
order to achieve their organisational objectives. This report will contextualise Tesco, British
multinational groceries and general merchandise retailer. This report will discuss role of different
organisational function along with importance of these working together well.
MAIN BODY
Role of different organisational functions
Marketing
This function is concerned with activities with help of which Tesco promote its products
and brands. This has important role in increasing sales and growth of business of Tesco. This
involves but is not limited to activities like market research and advertising (Mahlangu, 2018).
Marketing plays role through which Tesco can identify and understand demand of customers,
produce marketing and promotional activities.
Finance
Finance is another functional area in organisations and is one of the most important
functions that are carried out in organisation. Finance is concerned with activities like financial
management, accounting, budgeting, and management of cash flow. Finance function in Tesco
also plays important role in determination of financial targets of the company and plan profits
and cost of the company.
Operations/Production
Operations or production is concerned with the activity or activities through which inputs
like material, resources are converted into output or products that can be utilised by customers of
the company. Operations or production function involve planning of production in terms of
quality and quantity of the production and this is followed by undertaking production activities
so that Tesco can provide required products to its customers.

Human Resource
Human resource activities are those activities with help of which Tesco ensures that it has
right kind of manpower in organisation (Berman and Thelen, 2018). Other than this, HR function
also plays role in salary and wages and its distribution, training and development of employees
and on boarding of employees and other functions that are related to employees of Tesco.
Importance of functions working together
Marketing, finance, production and HR all these functions are carried out separately to
achieve individual functional objectives. But in order to achieve organisational objectives of
Tesco it is important functions are carried out together or they are effectively coordinated. This is
because it is not possible to successfully achieve organisational objectives without that.
Importance of functions working together is as follows-
Working together with HR ensures that Tesco and different departments within Tesco has
effective manpower to carry out all organisational functions.
By working together production and marketing can contribute in organisational
objectives of customer satisfaction. This means that marketing undertakes function of
market research regarding customer requirements and production ensures that products
are developed accordingly.
Working together with finance is important as with help of finance all other functional
department remain aware of their contribution in achieving financial objectives of Tesco
(Martínez-Sánchez, Vicente-Oliva and Pérez-Pérez, 2020). Along with this, budget of
different departments are also prepared by finance.
CONCLUSION
On the basis of above discussion, it can be concluded that all functions play important
role in operations of organisations. Effective coordination of these functions is highly important
for attainment of organisational objectives.
