INTRODUCTION
Concept of management and operations is mainly related with transformation of raw
materials into finished products. Effective implementation of all practices related with operations
of organisation is very essential to attain growth and success. Leaders and managers are the one
that play a crucial role in success of an enterprise (Zeng and et. al., 2014). TESCO, which is a
multinational general merchandise and groceries retailer is consider under this report. Dave
Lewis, is the leader of TESCO, various qualities and skills of his are presented in this report.
Various theories and approaches of operations management that could be implement by
enterprise to achieve its set goals and objectives is all given in this report. Further, relationship
between management of organisation with other key elements such as values, culture, CSR and
with stakeholders is all given in this project.

Concept of operations management is consider with planning and controlling
manufacturing process of organisation. This support in attain high level of efficiency in
production process that help company in maximise the number of its profits which ensure its
sustainability in market. Various theories of operations management are there that that help
management in analyse the situation and take appropriate action. These theories can be
understood by following points:
Six sigma: This is a theory that is used by company to improve the quality of all the
operations implement by company by removing all the errors and defects. Further, this support in
saves both cost and time (Wild, 2017). With this, management of TESCO can implement all its
activities by maintain a quality level.
Lean production: This is another most useful theory of operations management that is
concerned with cut out all the waste and focuses more on quality. Main feature of this theory is
that management of TESCO can apply this is all aspects of business from design to distribution
of its products and services.
Queuing theory: It is a technique of operations management that is employ by
management to identify the staffing needs, inventory level and scheduling of raw materials that
help in achieve customer satisfaction and also provide competitive benefit to enterprise.

Various approaches of operations management are there that help both leaders and
managers in improve the efficiency of all business activities that improves profitability of
company. These approaches are as follows:
TOM: This a procedure that support management in carry out planning for long time
period to achieve set objectives with available resources. Further, this support in maintain the
quality of company products and improves profitability (Webb, 2017). With this, TESCO can
offer quality products to its customers and can retain them for long time period.
JIT: This approach of operation management is concern with the procedure of
production. That process of production should be implemented with set time frames that help in
achieve set objectives. With optimum utilisation of all business resources and with minimum
wastages of resources company can implement all its activities in given time frame.
Kaizen: This concept is related with make the work environment more efficient by involve
all employees in order to achieve set goals and objectives. With this philosophy, TESCO can
maintain the quality of its products and can fulfil the requirements of its customers.
All these are the major approaches of operations management that can be employ by
management of TESCO to bring efficiency in production process and to improve the profitability
of company.
Operational functions
Number of functions are there that are perform by different organisation in order to fulfil the
requirements of its customers. TESCO also perform variety of function to satisfy the needs of its
customers and to retain them for long time period. Following are the main functions of TESCO:
Transformation of raw materials into finished goods: This is one of the main function
perform by TESCO. Company manufacture different type of products and sell the same under its
brand name . In this function, role of manager is to plan and allocate resources in a manner so
that production process can be carried out in an effective manner (Thornburg, Ustun and Krogh,
2016). Role of leader is to define roles and responsibilities of employees so that process can be
complete in timely manner. Dave Lewis set robust objectives for the employees that encourage
them to perform well and also enhance their productivity at workplace.
Process design: Manufacturing process is known as one of the main function of every
organisation. In this management design the steps and ways of manufacturing process. In this,

provide direction to activities of employees that results in achievement of set goals and

raw materials through which company can provide right product to its customers at right time.
Control is another functions of operational management. With this, TESCO can improve its
operational efficiency with help of control measures and techniques. Further, this support in

there which affect the decisions of leaders and managers. Resources available in organisation is
the major element (Rushton, Croucher and Baker, 2014). Major resources that require in an
organisation like TESCO is raw materials, human resources, financial resources and many more.
Managers require to manage every kind of resource in a systematic manner in order to take right

decision an to achieve desired results. Further, every day new trends come in market that are to
be require by company to better identify the requirements of its target customers. By analyse
trends and by carry out innovations in its products and services TESCO can better satisfy the
needs of its customers. Other elements that affect the decision making process of leaders and
managers can be understood by following points:
Culture and values: Culture is known as the defined norms, rules and regulations of an
organisation that are follow by the employees or every member of organisation to perform their
duty and job role (Punyateera and et. al., 2014). Values are the one that make an employee able
to make the difference between what is right and what is wrong. Culture and values that exist in
organisation play a big role in direct their behaviour and largely affect their decisions at
workplace. managers and leaders require to consider the values and culture adopt by company
before take any decision. Dave Lewis always take decision by consider values and also
encourage workers to work as per set values and norms that help business in operate in an ethical
manner.
Stakeholders: One of the main element that affect the decision making process of company
is the relationship with its external and internal stakeholders. Employees come under the
category internal stakeholder while suppliers, investors and customers are come under the
category of external stakeholders. It is significant for both managers and leaders to develop and
maintain good relations with stakeholders. Managers require to consider the expectations of

more that can be use by managers and leaders in order to ensure optimum utilisation of all
