Introduction
 The primary concern of operations management is
planning, organizing and supervising contexts of
production, manufacturing or provision of services
(Contreras and et.al., 2020).
 TESCO is the selected supermarket for this report.
 The relationship between leadership and management in
contemporary business environment is described in this
presentation along with key approaches to operations
management.

Comparison between the characteristics
of a leader and those of a manager
 Leadership and management is differentiated at
TESCO.
 The main aim of management is to ensure
effective functioning of the company while the
leadership looks at inspiring employees of the firm
(Edward and et.al., 2020).

Characteristic of Leader Characteristics of manager
• Leaders are forward thinking and are mainly
concerned with attaining long-term business goals
of the company. Leaders at TESCO focus on
attaining long-term strategic objectives of the firm.
• Leaders are people focused and prioritize success
of their team as it contributes to growth of the
business (Hoang and et.al., 2020). Leaders at
TESCO build strong relationships with their
subordinates to increase their performance.
• Managers are concerned with attaining short-term
goals of the company and completing daily
operations in a timely manner. Managers at
TESCO play an important role ins smooth
functioning of the company.
• Managers at TESCO are process focused and are
concerned with designing and managing end to end
processes instead of building relationships with
employees.

Role of a leader and the function of a
manager in different situational contexts
Crisis management
 TESCO faced crisis during the peak of COVID-
19 pandemic in UK.
 This is because the trade restrictions imposed in
the country lead to influx of online consumers.
 Leaders and managers have an essential part in
handling business crisis (Kamel, Rezk, and
Abdelkareem, 2020).

 TESCO has launched new own brand range
of plant based vegan products and ready
meals.
 The situation of new product launch requires
contribution from leaders and managers to
gain success (Li, Wan and Lai, 2020).

Assessment of different approaches of
leadership
 Situational leadership approach: This leadership
approach involves adapting management style
according to the needs of the team member and
necessities of the task.
 The strengths of this leadership approach are that it
enables flexible leadership, helps in creation of high
performing team and increasing awareness of the
leader (Ma, Liu and Meng, 2020).

 Contingency leadership approach: This approach
states that adoption of single leadership style is
inefficient in the long term and effectiveness of
leadership style is contingent on the context of the
situation.
 The strengths of this approach are that it enhances
decision making skills of the leader and its dynamic
nature helps face continuously changing environment.

Conclusion
 From the above presentatation it is determined that leaders and management play
an important role in success of business firms. The roles and characteristics of
leaders and managers are different. Leaders and managers have to complete
important functions and roles during various organizational situations such as
crisis management and new product launch. In addition to this, contingency
leadership approach, situational leadership approach and systems leadership
approach helps leaders in various business situations.
