NURSING ASSIGNMENT
The importance of the IOM "Future of Nursing" report
The Future of Nursing by Institute of Medicine (US) Committee by Robert Wood
Johnson Foundation Initiative on the Future of Nursing, Washington (DC) is an important
transformation in nursing that explores the roles and responsibilities of nurses and education that
meet the increased care demand in the healthcare system (Sensmeier, 2010). Nurses are the
single largest member in the healthcare workforce and have valuable insights and contribution in
the health sector. Therefore, this initiative is important, as it will establish a major change in the
future of nursing that advances health to meet the demands of the reformed and public healthcare
system. This is equally important, as it is a big step in the healthcare reform and preparing of the
system towards advancing change. This is vital in reconceptualising the nurses’ role within the
nursing workforce, societal issues, burnout, shortages and current and future technology. The
IOM goals are important as it focuses on the expansion of nursing faculty, increase in nursing
school strength so that there are well-prepared and competent nurses that meet the current and
future needs of healthcare system (Buerhaus, 2008). For the care delivery, nursing services are
important and so, this initiative helps to examine the innovative solutions that are required for the
care delivery and providing the best quality of care. When there is transformation and many
opportunities in the healthcare system in multiple settings, there is proper retention of the well-
prepared nurses in ambulatory, acute, long-term care, primary care and public and community
health (Nardi & Gyurko, 2013).

aim to build a healthy America and carry out this campaign at the regional, local and state levels.
It is executed in every state of Washington, D.C. where the community advocates including the
businesses, health organizations and education representatives work to build a healthy
community through leadership and nursing. They work in main six priority areas of nursing to
advance in health and bring transformation-leading healthcare in the system. Firstly, there should
be improvement in the access to healthcare services and this can be achieved though proper
education and adequate training of nurses to help them practice fully. Secondly, there should be
collaborative interprofessionalism and achieved when nurses collaborate with the business,
health, city planning and dedication advocates for the promotion of community well-being.
Thirdly, this cannot be possibly achieved without promotion of nursing leadership and it can be
achieved when nurses exhibit leadership qualities. Nursing education can be achieved when they
are prepared to meet the complex and increasing demands of the healthcare system in all settings.
As nurses is the most essential component in healthcare workforce, their diversity need to be
increased that reflect a country’s ethnic and rich cultural diversity. In order to achieve the
increased workforce, it is important to have accurate data collection on workforce in all areas of
health system and meet the country’s needs. Finally, the bottom line of role of state-based
coalitions is to build healthier communities that can be lead by nurses so that every individual
have the possible healthiest life.

healthcare system in Texas (campaignforaction.org, 2017). There is no such barrier observed in
these progress areas as reported by IOM.
Progress in Nursing leadership
Texas is progressing in the field of nursing leadership that is contributing to the nursing
culture and promoting and valuing nursing leadership. The mentors are helping nurses to learn
and grow in this field along with development of competency. RWJF is providing opportunities
to the mentors to boost the nurses under the Nursing Leadership Program. This landmark is
important in Texas as it is helping them to strengthen the nursing workforce and improve the
patient outcome and quality of care as reported by IOM, 2010. The nurses feel competent to be
exposed to ideas and people and connect with them as a source of constant support. Nurses are
helped through the difficult times and mentors celebrate their accomplishments with effective
guidance in difficult decisions and tough situations (campaignforaction.org, 2017). Therefore,
execution of leadership skills is the Texas progress towards Action Coalition.
Progress in nursing education
Another area of progress in Texas is transformation of nursing education. Under the
Action Coalition, the registered nurses who have finished their post-secondary education are also
taking up associate degree in nursing (ADN) that acts as the stepping-stone in their long
educational nursing profession. According to the IOM report, ADN nurses are crucial for the
nursing profession and delivery of healthcare. This program plays an important role for the
preparation and diversification of the nursing workforce providing skilled care. Therefore, this
progress made by Texas is spearheading towards highest quality of care and addressing complex
population like ageing population (campaignforaction.org, 2017).
