LOVE AND SEX 2
How philosophical theories in the course to examine my belief about love or sex.
Various theories elaborate the meaning of love and sex and how people should view the
two ideas. These ideas try to shape one’s belief and thoughts about sex and love. Many of these
theories explain that love is a healthy behavior in human life. However, many people have
misunderstood the meaning of love, and that is causing more negative effects today. On the other
side, spiritual theory sees love as a God’s gift, and everyone should respect it. In this task, it is
going to look at two ideas on love and sex and how they have influenced my thinking.
The triangular theory of love
Robert Sternberg came up with the triangular theory of love. In his theory, Sternberg
proposes three main aspects of love. These aspects include passion, intimacy, and commitment.
However, people may not embrace all these three aspects. When one combines any of these two
aspects, he or she ends up with a different type of love. For example, when one takes intimacy
and passion he or she ends up with romantic love, commitment and affection will result to a
compassionate.
Consequently, some people are able to have all the three-character traits in love,
intimacy, commitment, and passion. Such people end up with perfect love. The love is the most
pleasing one. What I learn from this type of theory is that people fail in love because they lack
some specific aspect that love requires. In some cases, one ma having all the character traits but
the partner may be lacing the primary character to make love fulfilling. The most important
thing, however, is that people should try to understand their weakness and find out how they can
combine all the three aspects that Sternberg illustrates in love.
The theory of Zick Rubin of loving versus liking

LOVE AND SEX 3
Zick Rubin is another philosopher that gives an idea about love. He proposes three
fundamentals that love should embrace. The elements include caring, attachment and intimacy.
In his concept, Rubin elaborates that the people we have around us impact us in very many ways.
You can end up admiring people around you, and when the influences continue, you will like to
spend with these people most of your time. However, such actions do not qualify as love, the
meaning of such instance is liking. Rubin explains that for a connection between two people to
be eligible as love it must have a more profound desire in contact and physical intimacy. When
there is a deeper connection, the two people tend to value each other and care for each one’s
needs. The attachment comes when everyone receives care, physical contract and approval from
one another. The idea of Rubin helps me to understand love in that; the ideas shows the level that
two people should say they love each other. In many instances, many people confuse liking and
loving. Apart from that, I learnt that love begins with affection. One may like another person but
do not end up loving them because there is no attachment to one another.
