Introduction
The ability of a nurse to become reflective is the key skill that helps the nurse to create
positive impact regarding the care service on the patients on a regular basis (Bulman & Schutz,
2013). Through the process of reflection, the nursing professionals could increase their
knowledge regarding the experience and promote their deep learning. It is the method of identify
the strengths and weakness if individual in order to improve their skill (Redmond, 2017). The
process also helps to gather new knowledge about the nursing practice. Thus, it is important for
the nursing professionals to include reflection in their practice in order to learn from their
mistakes and develop their skills in an effective manner. Using my ability to reflect on nursing
practice, I will reflect on one of my experience regarding therapeutic relationship in nursing
practice, through the help of Gibb’s cycle of reflection in the following paper.
Gibb’s reflection model
Description:
The main focus of the assignment is the video that was provided by the professor in order
to reflect on the content of the video. The video is about vital sign assessment of a patient and the
way of establishing therapeutic relationship with the patient by a nursing professional. In the
video the nursing professional was seen to maintain calm and polite nature in order to create
positive impact on the patient. Throughout the video, the nursing professional has maintained a
positive attitude and self-confident regarding his skill of conducting vital sign assessment. It has
helped him to gain the trust of the patient during the session. The nursing professional has
engaged the patient in a effective conversation. He has allowed the patient to speak for him. He

has used his communication skill in order to satisfy the patient and reduce the pressure of the
patient in his presence. Through the effective conversation, the nursing professional got the
consent of the patient regarding the assessment. Thus, he did not face any challenges throughout
the session. Throughout the video, it was seen that the nursing professional has maintained the
standard 2 of NMBA code of conduct that mentioned the importance of establishing therapeutic
relationship with the patient.
Feelings:
The video has played an important role in inspiring me to conduct vital sign assessment
in an effective manner. It was a pleasure to watch the way of establishing therapeutic relationship
with the patient. I was happy to understand about the body posture that is required to establish
effective therapeutic relationship with the patient. The way of starting conversation of the
nursing professional with the patient was encouraging. The communication skill of the nursing
professional has made me surprise. The strategy of the nursing professional of engaging the
patient in an easy conversation has helped me to understand the way of approaching the patient
in order to start the conversation. I was amazed to see the effort of the nursing professional to
establish effective therapeutic relationship with the patient. His way of speaking politely has
helped me to learn the proper way of respecting the dignity, culture and rights of the patient. The
video is helpful to identify the importance of the communication power and its role in gaining
the trust of the patient in order to carry out the vital sign assessment without any difficulties. It
has encouraged me to apply the positive aspects of the video in my daily practice in order to
improve my skill.

Evaluation:
The video has provided a visual experience that is helpful to understand the way of
establishing therapeutic relationship with the patient in an effective manner. The nursing
professional has started the vital sign assessment through an easy conversation. It has helped him
to reduce the nervousness of the patient regarding the assessment. The nursing professional has
maintained polite and calm nature throughout the video and has provided respect to the dignity,
culture and rights of the patient. It has helped to learn the way of maintaining ethical codes of
nursing. The decision of allowing the patient to speak for him has helped the nursing
professional to gain the trust of the patient. Thus, the patient has contributed to the session in an
effective manner. It has helped the nursing professional to carry out the vital sign assessment
without any challenges. His way of communicate with the patient has helped him to establish
effective therapeutic relationship with the patient. However, the nursing professional has done an
irresponsible activity during the session. The patient has stated some issues that he was facing in
the hospital during the stay, but the nursing professional did not provide any concern regarding
this. He did not try to identify the problem in depth. It might affect negatively on the patient.
Despite of such thing, there was a lot of positivity in the content of the video that was useful to
understand the prospective of standard 2 of NMBA code of conduct.
Analysis:
One of the important functions of the nurses is to establish mutual trust and respect in
their practice. The standard 2 of NMBA code of conduct plays an important role in order to
understand the way of building therapeutic relationship with the patient. According to the code, it
is the purpose of the nurses to engage in therapeutic and professional relationship (Registered
nurse standards for practice, 2016). The nurses should communicate effectively to provide

respect to the dignity, culture and rights of the patient (Cannaerts, Gastmans & Casterlé, 2014). It
is important to establish the relationship in a way that differentiates the limitation between the
professional and personal relationship (Blais et al., 2015). The code states that, the nurses should
respect the autonomy and legal capacity of the patient (LoBiondo-Wood & Haber, 2014). It
could help them to gain trust of the patient and meet the satisfaction level of the patient. The
nurses should use collaboration and referrals in their practice in order to provide effective care
(Alligood, 2017). Such activities help the patient to rely on the nursing professional and he or she
could contribute in the assessment in an effective manner. The implementation of such strategies
in the practice would help the nurses to achieve positive outcomes.
Conclusion:
From the above analysis it can be concluded that, standard 2 of NMBA code of conduct
provides effective ways of establishing therapeutic and professional relationship And the nursing
professional in the video has succeeded in establishing therapeutic relationship with the patient,
thus fulfil the requirements of the code in an effective manner. His way of approaching and
providing care service to the patient is appreciable, as it has helped him to gain the trust of the
patient. Due to this, the patient has provided his consent regarding the vital sign assessment and
participate in the session effectively, which has helped the nurse to carry out the session without
any difficulties. However, there was a negative activity done by the nurse, but the positive
aspects of the video were more acceptable in order to establish therapeutic relationship with the
patient.
Action Plan:
Firstly, I would collect books in order to gather knowledge about the therapeutic and
professional relationship. It could help me to understand the aspects of the standard 2 of NMBA

code in an effective manner (Kleinpell, 2013). Secondly, I would join workshop for improve my
communication skill. It could help me to learn about the way of starting an effective conversation
and maintain it throughout the session. It could help me to build rapport with the patient and gain
the trust in order to carry out the session efficiently (McCabe & Timmins, 2013). Reading
reliable journal could help me to update my knowledge regarding new ways of establishing
therapeutic relationship (Masters, 2015). Such actions could help me to improve my skill and
establish myself as a successful nurse in future.
