Introduction
Nepal is a beautiful country, located just near to the Himalaya in South Asia. Nepal
(officially known as the ‘Federal Democratic Republic’) is mainly located in Himalaya,
which is a mountain that separates the plains of Indian subcontinents from the Tibetan
Plateau. Nepal is a beautiful country and it has a wonderful environment that attracts millions
of tourist and visitors every year in the country. Tourism is one of the major sources of
income for people in the country. Nepal shares its border with China (Tibet Autonomous
Region) and India and large numbers of people from these two countries visit every year as
tourists to enjoy the weather and environment of the country.
Nepal is a country with rich ancient culture and it is a land of discovery and unique
experiences. The country is also known for its traditional cultural where large numbers of
Hindu people follow their tradition and culture. More than one million people and foreign
visitors come to Nepal to see its beauty and see the world’s largest Mount peak ‘Mount
Everest’ (Müller, 2019). However, tourism is one of the major sources of income in Nepal
and tourism is the way of alleviate the poverty in the country and help Nepal to achieve the
great social equity. By 2020, Nepal Tourism targets to increase the number of visitors by 2
million and the country growth in tourism sector were also recorded as 10% per year in last
two decade (Lama, Pradhan, and Shrestha, 2019).
The current report discusses about issue and challenges related to Nepal tourism and discuss
how country can enhance its income from tourism activities and sustainable approaches in
tourism sector. Tourism is one of the most popular ways of income in the country for the
people and thousands of people rely on tourism for their income and living. The report also
discusses how Nepal can develop its transportation and improve accommodation to attract
large number of people in the country.
Issues and challenges in Nepal tourism
Nepal has limited resources and very poor population where people depend on other country
like India and China for their employment and income. The country has large numbers of
unemployed people and they are suffering from lack of education and unemployment.
However, the country’s education and economic situation is improving from last few years
(Wearing, Beirman, and Grabowski, 2020). The country depends for its economy on India

and china. Large numbers of people are coming from these countries to Nepal. However, the
absence of resources and poor tourism management in the country creates issue for the
visitors. The second and most important thing is related to this destination is that shops are
charging too much from the foreign visitors and the product and accommodation quality are
not as good as other countries. However, the natural beauty attracts people to visit but the
financial condition of the country is not as good to provide better accommodation and
transportation facilities to tourists.
Today is the era of sustainable development and most of the tourism countries focus on
sustainable tourism context. Nepal should also focus on the sustainable tourism to improve its
tourism industry and must improve the local accommodation and transportation facilities for
the foreign visitors. The country needs to focus on several issue and challenges that can help
the counties to make its tourism sector more attractive source of income for the country.
Tourism Market Potential
The new emerging trend in tourism sector that can have great potential to develop as a new
tourism market for Nepal is ‘Wellness tourism’. For this purpose, the Nepal tourism can
attract students and old age people in the country for clean and pure environment. The
company can also provide various wellness programs and fun activities to stay healthy,
happy, and fit in the life (Sharma, 2020). Nepal is a beautiful place where large numbers of
people visit every year to see its beauty. However, in the era of high pollution especially in
China and India, Nepal ha opportunities to attract the people to live few days with nature and
enjoy a healthy life in pollution free country. As Nepal is not a developed country neither it
has wide area of industries or companies, the environment of the country is very pure and
clean. Most of the manufacturing and production of goods, Nepal depends on other countries
like China and India. In such a scenario, the country can attract the people as a tourist in the
country to enjoy the wellness tourism. There are large numbers of students in the schools and
colleges in India and China can also be targeted by the Nepal to visit in the country and see
the beauty of nature.
Nepal provides a wide range of fun activities for the foreigners in its tourism areas. The
major tourism activities in Nepal are Mountain climbing, trekking, Bird watching, Rafting,
Canyoning, bungee Jumping, mountain biking, and jungle safari etc. The students can also
enjoy the cable cars and ultra-light aircraft take off from Pokhara and see the beautiful lakes
and villages of the country. Pokhara, Kathmandu, Lumbini, Pashupatiath Temple, etc. are

some of the attractive places in the country where student tourist can enjoy their life and also
enjoy the tourism as wellness tourism in the country. Nepal is a small country and has very
less amount of resources to facilitate the tourists in the country. Therefore, the tourism
organisations in the country must focus on two crucial areas that are transportation and
accommodation in the country and it is really crucial for the tourist’s experience.
Transport Development
Transport is one of the great problems in the country. The people in the country use cart and
other animals such as camel and horses as a local medium of transportation. People pay
almost double what local pay there for transportation. Large number of tourists filed
complaint that country do not have proper medium of transportation from one place to
another place. It has been also noted that hotels and stay accommodations are not easily
available near the tourist place. For example, in Lumbini, one cannot move easily one place
to another even the distance between two destinations is too wide in the country. Nepal also
charges a high rate of taxes from the people who visit in Nepal as a visitor from other
countries. Although the country have various five years plan for transport development in the
tourism spots in past, but the transport authorities failed to achieve the goals sue to lack of
finance, technical manpower, and equipment (Laurea, 2018).
Nepal should focus on its transportation mode that can connect its one city to other in less
time. However, people still face challenges when they are travelling from one place to
another place. For example, the distance between Kathmandu to Lumbini is around 300 km.
but there is no easy route to travel in less time. Buses take almost 8 hours of travel and charge
$US 10 from every tourist. This fare not only high for the people rather it also a time
consuming way of travelling in Nepal. The other thing that is crucial ton care, that buses and
flights are not easily available in the country to move one place to another as Nepal is a small
country and their economy is not good (Rayamajhi and Nepali, 2016).
To improve the transportation and for transportation development, the Nepal government
should sign MoU with India and China to import latest technology buses and travelling
vehicles for the foreigners. Apart from this, the country should also focus on enhancing its
roadways networking for the people to move one place to another place (Kunwar and Khanal,
2018).

Accommodation Development
Numbers of hotels in Nepal are not enough as per the number of visitors in the country. There
are large numbers of people visit every year in Nepal, but Nepal does not have five star hotels
or good hotel that can provide better facilities to its customers. In modern time, the hotel
industry focuses on services and user experience in the hotel. However, the country is still
struggling with low internet speed that effect the Wi-Fi facilities that is provided in the hotels
for the people. The other thing that is noticeable is low quality food and drink for the people
(Nepal, al Irsyad, and Nepal, 2019). The country must think about to improve the basic
facilities for tourists in the country. However, they charges a high rate of services charges
from the visitors but they cannot provide world class facilities in the hotels.
The hotels in the country should focus on the availability of services around the clock. This is
the era of digitalisation and in this scenario, the country must launch mobile applications that
can help the tourists to find new hotels through their phone and can easily choose where they
can stay. The facility of selection hotels and viewing the accommodation facilities in hotels
can help the visitors to experience best travelling experiences in Nepal.
Crisis and Risk Management
Nepal is a country where large numbers of strong earthquakes destroy a wide range of
cultural and heritage sites in the country. However, the major risk is associated with the
travellers and tourists in the country because there are variety of fun activities in the
mountain peaks in Nepal that can even take the life of visitors because of a single small
mistake. For example, large numbers of people lost their life while climbing on the Mount
Everest. Apart from this, people who trekking on the mountains can also face the danger
(Upadhayaya, 2019).
As large number of people take risk of their life while travelling and trekking in Nepal the
responsibilities of tourist managers also increased to care about the people while they enjoy
the games. Another thing that is crucial to care is that dangerous way of climbing on
mountains and high rate of road accidents in the country (Sharma, 2018). These factors force
the manager to play their role as a sincere people and protect the life of people, who do not
have knowledge about the local places in Nepal. It is also the responsibility of managers to
provide proper information about the possible threats in the country related to sport games,
natural disasters, and local incidents of vehicle accidents while guiding them to move in the
country for the fun (Upadhayaya, 2019).

Social Media Influence
Social media is a great place to advertise about any destination and provide the beauty of the
place through providing photographs to the rest of the world on social media like Facebook
and Instagram etc. Nepal is a beautiful place where nature attracts the people from different
part of the world. Large numbers of people visit in the country to see its natural beauty like
mountain and lakes (Yergeau, 2020). Nepal is a small country where people are not hi-tech
like other parts of the world. Poverty is a major issue and it really make the way tough of the
local people. However, social media connect the world with the beauty of Nepal and can
advertise about the beautiful places of the country (Shrestha and Devkota, 2019).
The user of social media can influence the people all around the world to visit in Nepal and
enjoy the weather and natural beauty of the country. The photographs taken in Nepal can be
viral and liked by millions of people on the social media, and also influence them to visit
once in the country to see the nature beauty. However, social media also helps to boost the
communication and establish a connection of Nepal with other countries. Though the social
media communication and advertising cost is very less, it helps the country to boost its
tourism sector in all over the world and set the foundation of sustainable tourism. This will
attract a large number of tourist investors who can invest in the tourism sector of the country
that will boost the economy of Nepal in future (Shrestha and Devkota, 2019).
Visitors Experience Development
The visitors in the country generally face issues related to accommodation and transportation
in the country. Nepal is a small country and have very less amount of resources to facilitate
the tourists in the country. Therefore, the tourism organisations in the country must focus on
these two areas, which is crucial for the tourist’s experience. Better transportation facilities in
the country help the tourists to easily move one city to other city or one tourism spot to
another. The other thing that is crucial to care in transportation industry is related to roadways
and infrastructure in the country. The country must focus on provide better travelling
experiences in the country through train, buses, cabs, and aeroplanes (Dhakal, 2019).
The second thing that is related to tourist’s experience is issues in accommodation. The
country still does not have world-class hotels and restaurants. The domination of local foods
somewhere irritates the tourist people who want some other continent foods. The charge in
hotels for food and milk is so high but the quality was not good as people expect in Asian
country. However, the accommodation should be available on online platforms easily but

lack of internet speed is a major problem in the country due to bad weather. If these issues
can be eliminated or reduced by the tourist companies, then it will definitely attract a large
number of people to visit as tourist in Nepal (Rastegar, 2019).
Conclusion
In conclusion, Nepal is a beautiful place to visit but the lack of financial resource and
manpower influence the tourism sector in the country. The major challenges in the tourism
sector can be detected in the accommodation and transport sector where Nepal failed to
provide world-class facilities to its visitors. The other thing that is very challenging for the
international visitors in the country is to face the difficult weather and challenges on the roads
because of poor infrastructure in roadways. As Nepal can target the students and old age
people and influence them for the wellness tourism in the country, people from China and
India (or any polluted country, where pollution level is very high) can visit Nepal to see the
natural beauty and spend few days of their life in a greenery spot near the Himalaya. The
country should also focus on improving the facilities for the foreigners in its hotels and
should ensure the availability of international food and cuisines.
The major challenge at tourist places is related to life threat of people during dangerous
games like trekking and mountain climbing are also the issues in front of tourism managers.
The managers should provide proper safety and security to the international visitors, while
tourists trekking or climbing on the mountain and must inform them about the possible risks.
However, if proper safety and security will be provided to the people during their sports
exposure or activities then the cases of death troll during climbing hills and mountains can
easily be minimised in Nepal, and this will also improve the image of the country as one of
the best tourism country in the world. Apart from this, the country can also focus on
sustainable tourism that can inspire and attract people for its awareness and responsibilities
towards the natural resources and natural heritage.
