Introduction
Mexico City is the capital of Mexico. It is located on the Valley of the Damned in
Mexico. The area it covers is around 1,485 sq. km. Mexico City have high altitude with
beautiful climate that attracts most of the tourists to visit during winter. It is 7,240 feet above
the sea level.
Rationale
This assignment focuses on the region of Mexico. The North region of Mexico have
Baja, Sonora, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Durango, Zacatecas, Aguascalientes, Nuevo Leon and
Tamaulipas. This paper highlights a brief understanding on travel and tourism in Mexico.
This paper will enable the historical events that shapes the Mexico region and its
development. It focuses on the sources that are available for employment and wealth of the
city. It also discusses about the social and political life of Mexican City. It describes the
transportation system in Mexico that attracts mass tourists to visit that place (Barkin 2013).
The type of accommodation they have for local and tourist people who stays for short
vacation. It clearly states some of the issues that are faced by the tourist industry of Mexico.
The issues are solved by proposing a tourist development strategy of that region that have an
immense impact on supply and demand system of that region. It considers some of the ethical
issues that impacts the cost and benefit of Mexico.
The North region of Mexico have Baja, Sonora, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Durango,
Zacatecas, Aguascalientes, Nuevo Leon and Tamaulipas. The North Region of Mexico is
spread to 2000 miles. It starts from Pacific coast of Baja California to the low lands of Gulf
of Mexico. The North Region have its cuisine reflects the enthusiastic and self-effacing
nature of ranch culture. The North Region is famous for its fabulous cooking techniques that

attracts most of the tourists to try grilled beef of that region. The Region is famous for some
more popular dishes such as machaca, cabrito also called baby goat, arrachera also called
Fajitas. The Baja California is a sub- region in Mexico, which is considered as the oldest
district that produces wine and assures for quality varietals.
Historical events that shaped the region’s development
A great history from the cities of Maya to Aztecs, Mexico has risen as rich cultural
heritage from past 10,000 years. The timeline below shows some of the historical events that
shaped for development in Mexico-
Porfirio Diaz in 1910 took a picture with the great Aztec Calendar Stone at the National
Museum of Anthropology. The regime shows the indigenous past of patriotism and attracts
tourists.

Tourism in Mexico have developed by establishment of Mexican republic. Some of
the writers such as John Lloyd Stephens and Edward B. Tylor are the main source to attract

governed the country as The President just after the civil war. The Mexico have inaugurated
the direct Pullman service that was available from U.S to Mexico in 1884. This helped in the
development of constructing suitable paths that were dangerous for the tourists in the past.
The Mexican Central Railway promoted more number of tourists into the country (Rojas
2014). The government running the tourism industry hired a professional photographer and
writers such as James W. Steel, who helped in promotional copy. The government have also
introduced some employment facility by employing some of the English- speaking translators
were appointed for the tourists to guide them effectively. In 1910, with the independence of

located at Teotihuacan near Mexico City. The railway service was available to tat spot which

tourists were from Europe and America.
In the 21st century, the Mexican Revolution from 1910 to 1920 was the period of
interruption of tourism to Mexico. In the year 1930, the Mexican government gain initiated
tourism programs with posters of light skinned young women and some lush gardens. During
1920 to 1930, there was an immense change in culture, the cultural exchange with variety of
religion and language helped to develop the cultural values in Mexico. With the promotion of
tourism in Mexico, the government became the cabinet position, the Ministry of Tourism in
the year 1975. During Jazz stage, the consumption of alcohol was in huge amount. This
consumption helped to increase the tourist attractions to such places. The song by Frank
Sinatra helped to promote the regional values through the song called, South of the Border.
The Mexican government developed beaches and resorts in the year 1940 and 1950 in
Acapulco. Then the president was Miguel Aleman, who is now the commissioner of Tourism.
Mexico was then alerted to protect the tourist venues such as colonial cities,
archeological sites, some natural wonders such as UNESCO world Heritage. The private
philanthropy has a vital role in preserving from damage. Mexican government have achieved
a level of security for the rise of tourism in the country and to enhance cultural exchanges.
The government have also promoted some precautions to alert the international tourists to
avoid drugs and alerted them for some regions of the country.
The National Palace of Mexico City is the main attraction for many tourists, which is
located near Main Square also called the Zocalo. It is a site for tourists who visit to see Aztec

ceremonial centre. It is one of the famous historic centre. Cancun is a major tourist
destination which is surrounded with water, tourists are interested in water acts and they visit
in huge mass.
Sources of wealth and employment
The economy of Mexico is considered to be the 15th largest with nominal terms that is
stated by the International Monetary Fund and stands in 11th largest that has the purchasing
power parity. The North Mexico has an average of 8% Mexico’s GDP, and 5.7% increased
employment that gives a tough competition to the Bahamas, and Jamaica. The employement
rate is high as the economy states to be in developing stage regarding modern industry and
service sectors.
The tourism has high contribution for increased employement and wealth in Mexico.
It has enabled with foreign direct investment that increases the economy of Mexico. As
Mexico is one of the important tourist destination in Latin America, the North Mexico region
is benefited with 30% income source from international tourists who visit in large numbers
every year.
The contemporary social and political life
The federal government of Mexico has highly contributed its resources and performed
its responsibilities towards the recovery of natural disaster such as Hurricane. The political
issues such as teacher’s strike in Oaxaca has impacted the flow of visitors and portrayed bad
image for Mexico (Woosnam 2015). Also the popular Revolutionary Army have blown the
oil pipelines that lowered the image of Mexico.
The government have enhanced its activities towards betterment of tourism industry
by spending large amount to restructure or redesign infrastructure for attracting more tourists

Transportation System and type of accommodation in Mexico
The air travel is the convenient way for the international tourists to move from one
destination to another to save time and money. The Mexico is also providing low cost carriers
and domestic airlines that can attract more tourists of rich and poor who have a dream to visit
such places. These airlines offers good service at competitive prices for the international
tourists. Mexico have buses that mainly travels for long distance journey. It provides a wide-
ranging network of buses with short intervals. These buses provides luxury coaches and also
with high comfort travel experience. It also avails the international tourists with rent car
services that offers discounted offerings as per the budget of the tourist. It also allows the
tourist to schedule the journey with greater independence compared to any other public
transport system. These tourists have been benefited with government infrastructural projects
such as airport. This has helped large international tourists to visit Mexico with smooth
travelling and adds value to the transportation service system of Mexico. The tourists who
urges to visit the beaches in Mexico can have a beachside view with availability of number of
resorts nearby. The resorts offering high comfort and good quality services and food have
attracted the tourists to visit again for such experiences. This also benefits the travel agency,
hospitality industry, and travel insurance company with large investment by international
tourists mainly from US, Canada. The transport system is good but the tourists travelling in
personal cars or rent cars must acknowledge the safety and strict following of traffic rules, as
rules of roads in Mexico are very different from other regions. The transportation through
ferry, ship or boat can provide the international tourists a natural view of nature with

beautiful scenery that surrounds the city. The train is also available for travelling, although a
famous train called El Chepe is the tourist train. As the Mexico City have most beautiful
beaches and ports, many ferries are available for the international tourists that connects
several islands of Mexico with the mainland. A ferry is also available for Baja California and
for Mazatlan. Mexico is also having metro, which is the second largest in North America. It
offers many suitable accommodation to the international tourists such as Casa Pepe, Hotel
Catedral, Barcelo Mexico Reforma, Hotel Punto MX, Hotel Historico Central, Courtyard by
Marriott Mexico City Airport, Hotel Zocalo Central, Hyatt Regency Mexico City, and Deco
Housing Luxury Rentals Roma Norte. These hotels provides accommodation to adult tourists
with bar and a property where kitchen, free Wifi and a luggage storage space. Some hotels
also provide free bike rides to roam around the city. Some provide a heated pool, free gym,
and spa centre.

The North Mexico have beach destinations such as Cancun, Acapulco an many more.
Guadalajara is a tourist attraction and museums, its art galleries and famous theatre acts grabs
the attention of foreigners. The tourism have major development in Baja California. The
appeal of the region is through various festivals and celebrations. Mexico has many religious
and celebrate various festivals by various kind of people. Food and drink festivals are major
attractions of tourists in Mexico. The Alfenique fair in Toluca, is the International Pasty
Festival which bring a large number of tourists to visit for various cultural and regional
products (Blasco 2014). The beaches and monuments are the main attraction of Mexico. The
Isla Mujeres have some top attractions such as, Paradise Island, Coba and Tulum, Contoy and
Mujeres, Snorkel with Whale sharks. The Puebla have some of the attractive destinations

such as, Iztaccihuati and Popocatepetl volcanoes hike, Cholula Pyramid and Churches.
Cozumel have several beautiful beaches that attracts the tourists to see the submarine
expedition, reef snorkelling from playa del Carmen, the mayan frontier by horseback and
beach, amazing underground river guided tour, Chankanaab National park, Cozumel Jeep
safari with Beach. The sites have some zip line adventure at chankanaab park.
The issues that affects the tourism industry in Mexico
Some of the challenges are gaining high source that would prevent tourism industry
for growth. The recession observed in US economy have staged for dependency on North
American visitors. There is an alarming issue for the need of implementation of policies
regarding diversifying the tourist markets. Some of the issues states that the advancement of
infrastructure and the modernization in tax system with revised labour laws has been the
major issues that affected tourism industry. The impact of reduced income inequality has
impacted the tourism industry. The international tourism in Mexico has been determined to
be the slowest in recovering from US economic slowdowns. The North Mexico is lagging of
tourism growth for mature destination in Mexico has improved the tourism system but have
declined its international visitors to Mexico as its market is small compared to new market
among the countries. The tourism industry have main problems with violence and increased
crime that impacts the Mexico’s economy.
Tourism Development Strategy of Mexico
Revision of policy- Policy that can guide tourists to visit safe beaches and other tourist
locations in Mexico. As the Mexico’s tourism industry reflects strong upside but lack in
security issues. So it is important to enable more security in those regions where high danger
and accidents have occurred (Ritchie 2014). As tourism is the main source of income of the

city, the tourism must be focused mainly to transform its activities that can attract as many
tourists other countries are attracting in current year.
Positive Effect- the tourism activities can have a positive effect on tourists by development of
services. As tourism are the source for employment, it must encourage more tourists and
traders to be encouraged with growth aspects. The government that spends money for tourism
are rotated in the economy of the country. The positive effect can be effective by availing
more hotels for suitable and comfortable stay. The demand for local products can be on
demand by the increased amount of tourists in the city.
Government acts- the government can provide relaxation for immigration controls. This
allows visa from other countries that can enable vast tourists to visit the Mexico City. With
the improvement of transportation, enabling the city with more international airport can help
more number of tourists to enjoy their vacations in Mexico. Enable the local people to learn
English language as they can help the tourists to understand and transparency in
communication can be achieved.
Security- Local resorts can gain more profit with better transportation facility for the
destination. Personal cabs or vehicles must be available for the tourists and guide map that
can help the tourists to reach safe at the destination and with less time they can reach to the
destination (Gladstone 2013).
Language transparency- the international tourists are from different regions having different
language fluency. The tourism industry must have translators who can help the tourists in
guiding their vacation plans effectively.
Advantages of tourism development plan

As tourism promotes for more job opportunities such as for tourist guide or people who
works in hotels or taxi drivers or the maintenance staffs, these are some of the employement
opportunities that tourisms offers.
Tourism increases the source of income in Mexico City. The tourist who spends as an
expenditure or pays tax helps the city to increase the income of the city.
Infrastructure improvements helps to preserve the history of the city. This attracts lots of
tourists to visit such historical monuments for years.
It also improves the international relations with UK, US, and other country who visits Mexico
in vacations.
