INTRODUCTION
Career refers to a person's metaphorical journey through learning, work and other aspects
of life. It can be a process where people execute an elaborated evaluation over the career path in
order to monitor the sector to be getting entry and type of job to be selected (De Vos and
Cambré, 2017). In Current time tourism is a sector which make large and high level of
contribution in the economic growth of the nation and there are high chances of growth and
development. It is helpful to an individual to finding out various industries and select best among
them for future job. As a fresher, it is time to choose a better sector in which I can pursue my
career so for this I select travel and tourism industry. Because it is considered to be one of the
fastest growing and developing industry which offer various career options. To do this research
on travel and tourism sector I have decided to For performing this investigation on retail sector I
have decided to execute both primary and secondary research for the position of tour guide in a
travel organisation.
Analysis and Application
Travel and tourism sector is basically a part of hospitality industry and this sector is a cast
or large group business with on common goal that is to offer required or necessary products ad
services to the travellers. Tourism sector is essential for the benefits it brings and due to its role
as a commercial activity that generate demand and growth for many more sectors. Tourism not
only make contribution towards more economic activities but also create job opportunities,
revenues and play an effective role in the growth. Becoming a tour guide is one of the great
opportunity for each individual who want to pursue their career in travel and tourism as it offer
various option of growth. This is because a tour manger is responsible for controlling al the
actions and activities which are performed in a tourism organisation and providing solution for
those issues which are facing by the clients. This all make contribution in enhancing those skills
and competencies which provide support in selecting better career path. To evaluate the
importance and effectiveness of this job role primary and secondary research has been executed
which is as following:
Secondary research- Within this kind of research, information is collected with the help of
different sources where data is already published by others to do similar kind of research (Faris
and Shuren, 2017). This type of research is executed in order to process an understanding in

context of current area of investigation by considering previously used information so that it can
further explored over a particular region. In this research, the information is collected from
different sources like webpages, articles, internet, magazines, books and others.
General trends which will impact on travel and tourism industry-
A tour guide within a tourism organisation dealing with the travellers and tourist who
come to visiting different place of a specific nation. They have different needs like
entertainment, adventurous trips and others (Jiang, 2017). But despite of this, there are some
other trends that are continuously experiencing by tourism sector as there is generating increment
in the players who came up in this sector with new and innovative services and products to attain
competitive advantages. In Tourism sector, there are various major trends found like active and
adventure trips, female solo travel, disaster and crisis planning , family reunion travel,
technology, globalization and others which highly influence the operations executed by a tour
guide in following manner:
A tour guide must have information about various different destinations son that they can
perform their duties in an effective manner and provide correct information to client
about them. For this, they should visit different location and use internet to update their
knowledge about disaster and crisis so that during the time of offering their services thy
they can provide information about these things to customers.
The prediction of globalization has influenced the needs and demands of clients that they
have against a company. The tour guide is responsible to provide information about the
different tour packages which are offered by the company in context of international
tourism. So, the guide must be have information about the global trips and destinations to
provide information to the clients.
Skills, knowledge and experience which are required
A tour guide have various role and responsibilities as they have to manage different types
of clients and they are responsible to fulfil the needs of them, organising tours by groups, arrange
the necessary permits and others (Khlevniuk, Nordlander and Raleigh, 2015). For this, a tour
guide required various skills and knowledge and they are defined as following:
Skills-
Communication skill- it is one of the most important skill which is highly required as a
tour guide. Because the main duty and responsibility of a tour guide is to provide information to

the clients about the different places and destinations where are going to visit. So with the help of
this skill will make effective interaction with the people.
Time management skill- It is another effective and required skill to a tour guide. Because
they are responsible to visit the clients of different locations, places and others so due to having
this skill, they can manage the time according according the tour package (O’Neil and Hopkins,
2015).
Conflict management skill- This skill is important and essential to a tour guide because
with the help of this skill, they can provide solution to their clients when they have any problem
related to trip, destinations, time and others.
Presentation skill- It is also an effective skill which is required to a tour guide. Because
due to having this skill, they can present their views in front of tourists.
Flexibility- Due to having this skill, they can perform their job duties in effective manner
and provide visit to clients according to them in flexible manner.
Knowledge area and experience-
In depth information about several places- A tour guide must have knowledge about
various places and locations. So that when any individual go for a historical and educational trip
then they can provide information about the history of that location.
Knowledge about different languages- It is an another area and experience from which
tour guide have information. They have knowledge about different languages because during the
time of performing their job duties and responsibilities, they meet and interact with different
people who prefer different languages (Savickas, 2016). So make proper communication with
them, it is necessary to have information about several languages.

Currently I am pursuing my MBA in Marketing and Entrepreneurship specialization and for
searching a better career opportunity, I decide to step in travel and tourism sector (van Ginkel
and et. al., 2016). I feel, it would be a best field to start a job and developing a successful career
in this industry as a tour guide. It would be a great opportunity which provide me a chance to
explore my management skills that will be make contribution in my career. With the help of
effective communication skill, I will provide appropriate information to clients about various
things like historical places, locations, destinations and others. Despite of all this, MBA is a
course of overall personal development which building an understanding in context of skills and
competencies which are needed for effective management. With the help of it, I can perform my
work in an effective manner and my area of interest will encourage me to do my duty in efficient
manner. Therefore, the career in travel and tourism sector as a tour guide is good for my as my
interest and there are high growth opportunities for future.
