Tourism refers to the activities of a person or a group of persons travelling to another place
other than the place they are staying in or outside their environment they usually lives in.
Tourism is one of the most important sector for the income of government. The tourism
industry is highly supporting the GDP of the country. Tourism is an essential factor for the
growth of the country as it promotes development of infrastructure, revenue of the
economy and generation of employment opportunities for the local residents of the country
(Yu, Wen and Meng., 2020). It is a good way of exchanging cultural values between local
citizens and foreigners that are visiting the country. United kingdom is 10th biggest tourism
destination and is really popular among the travellers. In 2017, the tourism industry
contributed a total of £213 in the economy of the country with over 37 million tourists and
visitors. tourism is important for any country as it promotes trading activities, provide
employment opportunities and also increases the revenue of the government.

Contemporary tourism is one of the most important concept for countries as it helps
in development of the economy and also helps the country in promoting sustainable
tourism. It focuses on the issues that are faced by the tourism industry nowadays such as
terrorism and health scares faced by the tourism sector. It provides knowledge about the
threats and opportunities that the tourism sector have and will also provide understanding
about crises that the tourism industry can face because of environmental issues and the

waste management activities that are needed to be considered by the government (Zare.,
2019). It is a refreshing approach towards the study of tourism and issues such as
destination marketing, changing world order, pro-poor tourism and tourism ethics. It is
important for the government to make sure that they are providing better facilities and
safety to their tourists as it will help them in increasing their revenues and will also make
sure that the country is having appropriate growth and development which is good for the
local people of the country as well. It is a essential factor for tourism industry and on the
same time it is one of the most misunderstood concept in the world today (Sag and Zengul.,
2019). It is a concept that is engaged with almost every person that is affected by the
tourism industry and is regarded as one of the most crucial segment for the economic
development of the country.
Positive and negative economic impact on tourism
Tourism industry has both positive and negative impact on the economy of the country
(Bosak and McCool., 2019). It is important for the government to make sure that
appropriate measures have been taken so that these negative impact can be reduces and
the country has fuller benefit of positive economic impact.
Positive impact
Increase in job opportunities: One of the most important impact of tourism is the
generation of more employment opportunities fop local people (Cardia., 2018). It is
important for the government to make sure that people have proper job opportunities so
that they can at least earn their basic lifestyle. Tourism sector provide a large number of
employment opportunities to the people which will not only increase their standard of living
but will also increase the disposable income of people.
Higher quality of life of locals: It is important for the local people of the country to
have a good and healthy lifestyle which can help them in having their basic necessities and
will also promote a healthy lifestyle (Haverly and et. al., 2020). It will provide education
opportunities to lot of children and will also provide healthy diet to the people of

Increase in wealth: The more people earn will provide more saving opportunities to
the the people which is not only good for the households but are beneficial for the economy
of the country as it will help in providing more liquidity in the market.

Increase in maintenance expenses of tourists destinations: Government have to
spend high amounts on the maintenance of the cultural and tourism places which are
important as it will help in generating income for the government (Sutheeshna., 2021). Each
year tourists visit those places which makes the destination depleted and requires repairs. It
is also important for the government to follow the safety standards as if any tourist gets
hurt then it will be extremely bad situation for the country.
Increase in inflation: as the purchasing power of the people or citizen increases, it
gives a rise to inflation in the economy as the demand increases in comparison to the supply
of products (Ballantyne and et. al., 2018). In that case the government has to provide more
subsidies to the local citizens on the basic necessities items so that everyone has reach to
them.
Positive and negative environmental impact on tourism
Positive impact:
Increased awareness about environmental factors: Increased impact of tourism on
environment also increasing the awareness about environment degradation in the
population. It is important for everyone to take collective actions through which
environment can be saved from degradation (Senbeto and Hon., 2019). People nowadays
are extremely concerned about environmental factors and also prefer products as well as
services which are providing less harm to the nature.

Maintenance of local heritage: Although the maintenance cost is high but the local
authorities and government put focus on the local heritage of the country (Ulqinaku and
Sarial-Abi., 2021). It is important to save local heritage as it is a symbol of culture and values
of the community.
Negative impact
Natural resource degradation: As the tourists comes in the country, they utilizes the
natural resources of the country which is limited (Kirillova and et. al., 2020). Scarce
resources used by the tourist makes it difficult for the local people to manage their demand
for that particular resource. Water is one of the major resource which is scares and are a
basic necessity for everyone. It is important for the government to make sure that proper
managements are made so that people does not have to suffer because of limited
resources.
Increase in pollution: The tourist coming into the country will travel almost everyday
(Shakeela and Weaver., 2018). Because of tourist extra waste is also produced and it
becomes extremely important for the government to manage that waste through effective
waste management techniques so that the country does not have to face difficulties
because of increased pollution and environmental degradation.
Positive and negative socio cultural impact on tourism
Positive impact:
Increased trade activities: The tourist visiting the country increases the trading
activities of local businesses. They provide income and revenue opportunities to local
businesses as they like to buy things while visiting the country (Jamal and Camargo., 2018).
The tourists of the country also uses public services of that particular country which makes it
beneficial for the funds of the public service department of the country such as healthcare,
police department, fire department, local transportation department, etc.
Negative impact

Increase in taxes: As people earn more the taxation policies of the government also
changes (Arroyo and et. al., 2021). People may have to pay higher taxes as it is a way of
increasing revenue for the government and as the government is spending on the expenses
they will require income as well on the basis of that. It is important for the government to
make sure that they are imposing tax liabilities on the business according top the income
they are having.
Increase in overall price of living: as the income of the people increases the
disposable income and purchasing power of people also increases. It creates a situation of
inflation in the economy of the country which is not beneficial for the local people as now
they have to spend more income on products they want to purchase (Farrington and et. al.,
2018). It is important for the government to manage the inflation in the economy as due to
high inflation, more people may have to suffer from poverty and they will not be able to
purchase basic necessities which are essential for living.
Conclusion
From the above essay, it is concluded that tourism plays an important role in the economic
growth of the country. It helps the country in developing their infrastructure and will also
helps them in generating revenues which is good for the local people of the country as well.
The tourism sector of the country contributes highly in the GDP of the country and the
purchases that the tourists make in the local market helps the local citizens in generating
more income which increases their disposable income and also their standard of living.
Government plays a major role in managing the effects that the country is having due to
tourism. It is important for the government to make sure that the impact on the economy
and environment is not effecting the local citizens of the country severely.
