Annotated Bibliography 3
Singal, M. (2015). How is the hospitality and tourism industry different? An empirical test
of some structural characteristics. International Journal of Hospitality Management,47, 116-
119.
The aim of this research paper is to define and explain the various factors which are involved in
the hotel and the tourism industry and to analyse how this industry is different from the other
industries. They used the empirical model which is made of the structural characteristic. The
structural characteristics mean the factors that impact on the strategic management of the
organisation directly, like capital intensity, competition, leverage, risk, etc. For conducting this
research, the authors used the method of performing the empirical test on some of the structural
characteristics related to the hotel and tourism industry. For comparing the structural
characteristics, the authors prepared a sample from the firms which are present in the S&P1500
index in the duration of the year 1992 to 2012. The financial and the stock information is
collected from the Compustat and some of it from the CRSP security files in the University of
Chicago. The findings of the paper given that the hotel and tourism industry is the one which
faces high risks, high competition because the consumers can switch easily in this industry. It is
also found that the HT industry faces high leverage and high capital intensity as compared to the
other industries because it posses less flexibility and acquires a huge amount of capital
investment. There are many risks faced by the hotel and tourism industry as it requires a long
term investment. The limit of the research paper is that it researched only four factors but there
are also other factors which make the hotel and tourism industry different from others.

Kallmuenzer, & Peters. (2018). Innovativeness and control mechanisms in tourism and
hospitality family firms: A comparative study. International Journal of Hospitality
Management, 70, 66-74.
The research paper is focused on analysing the changes which are occurred in the tourism and
hospitality industry owned by the family firms, in the financial condition of the firm due to the
innovations of the new ideas. The innovation in the family firms in the hospitality and the
tourism industry is not that easy. For conducting this research, the authors compared these family
firms with non-family firms in the same industry on the basis of the financial changes. The
authors analysed the data of 180 firms out of which the 32 firms are of the tourism hospitality or
family firms and the remaining 92 firms are non-tourism hospitality family firms. The authors
after conducting this research found that the role of innovativeness in the THFF on performance
is the same as that in the performance of non THFF. The control mechanism can be used
effectively in the non-tourism hospitality family firms (THFF) as it is found relevant in this type
of firms but it also has a negative impact on the relationship of the innovativeness and the
performance of the firm. The conclusion of this research paper suggests that the innovativeness
in both types of firms have a positive and beneficial effect on the financial performance of the
firms. The control mechanism is not that much relevant in the family firms.
