Critical Review: Tourism Theories and Practices from JHTM Articles

This report presents a critical review of two journal articles from the Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Management, focusing on tourism theories and practices. The first article examines the role of tourism in the economies of Bali and Indonesia, analyzing its impact on GDP and job opportunities. The second article analyzes the progress of the tourism industry in the Republic of Macedonia from 1945 to 2015. Introduction
In today’s business world, the tourism industry is considered as one of the fastest
growing industries all over the world. Authors all over the world have been conducting different
kinds of research on various relevant topics of tourism. All these research papers have been
publishing in the form of different research articles or journal articles. In this context, it needs to
be mentioned that different kinds of journal articles related to world tourism can be found in the
website of Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Management. This particular study conducts a
critical review on two of the important tourism related journal article from Journal of Hospitality
and Tourism Management. This review takes into different aspect of these two articles like the
aim of these articles, discussion of results of these articles, conclusion of these articles,
presentation of information of these two articles and others. Thus, it can be said that the main
purpose of the review of these two articles is to understand the attempts of these two articles by
analyzing all the necessary aspects. These two articles are related with different aspects of
tourism industry.
Two articles from the Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Management have been
considered. The title of the firs journal is “Role of Tourism in Economy of Bali and Indonesia”
by Made Antara and Made Sri Sumarniasih (jthmnet.com 2018). From the name of the article, it
can be clearly understood that the main focus area of this research is to analyze and evaluate the
role of tourism industry on the economic development of Bali and Indonesia like the effect on
gross domestic product (GDP), job opportunity and others. The title of the second article is
“Analysis of Tourism in the Republic of Macedonia 1945-2015”; and the name of the author is
Nikola V. Dimitrov. From the name of this article, it can be observed that the main focus of this

article is to analyze and evaluate the progress of tourism industry from the period 1945 to 2015
(jthmnet.com 2018). Thus, from the above discussion, it can be observed that there has been
difference in the focus area of these two articles. The quote “The role of tourism to the economy
of Bali and Indonesia can be seen from the increase in tourist arrivals. The study results showed
that if tourism is represented by the trade, hotels and restaurants sector, tourism contribution to
the economy of Bali is 27.82% in 2010 to be 31.35% in 2014” from the first article shows the
intention of the article to identify the areas of progress in the economy of Bali and Indonesia due
to the tourism industry (jthmnet.com 2018). On the other hand, the quote “The paper analyzes
the tourism in the Republic of Macedonia for the period 1945-2015” from the second article
indicates the progress of tourism industry in Macedonia (jthmnet.com 2018).
Critical Review
From the above discussion, it can be observed that both the articles have different aims or
focus area; and these aims have provided with the necessary direction to the research process.
From the analysis of the aims, it can be said that both the articles have attempted to use the
tourism industry in a much broader area as both the articles have used tourism industry in respect
of certain countries (jthmnet.com 2018). From the aim of the first article, one can easily guess
that tourism has a positive role to play for the overall economic development of Bali and
Indonesia. On the other hand, out of the aim of the second article, the author has tried to analyze
the progress of tourism industry in Macedonia from 1945 to 2015. Thus, on the overall basis and
by not considering the results of the research, the authors of both the articles have taken great
attempts to explore tourism in a broader sense (jthmnet.com 2018).

As the aims of the two articles are different, the results also differ from each other on a
huge note. As per the result of the first article, it can be seen that there has been a fluctuation in
the growth of tourists in Bali. The percentage increased in 2013 and 2014 and the decreased in
2015 (jthmnet.com 2018). However, an increasing trend can be observed in Indonesia in the
number of tourists from the year 2012 and it is increasing. Due to this growth, there has been
increase in the number of hotels in both Bali and Indonesia. At the same time, the tourism
industry of both Mali and Indonesia is contributing largely towards GDP. In case of the second
article, the results show that there has been increase in the number of tourism in Macedonia
starting from 2002. Moreover, there has been increase in the demand in this tourism industry and
this industry is contributing largely towards the GDP of the country (jthmnet.com 2018).
From the analysis of the conclusion of the first article, it can be observed that a total of
36% of the total tourists of Indonesia comes to Bali for tourism. This aspect leads to the increase
in contribution towards the GDP by the Bali tourism industry from 65.28% to 68.28%. In case of
the conclusion of the second article, it can be seen that the development of tourism in Macedonia
was interrupted due to the break-up of Yugoslavia. It can also be seen that the tourism industry
of Macedonia has been going through massive structural transformation (jthmnet.com 2018).
Reflection
At the time of doing this assignment of critical review, I have not faced much issues
related to referencing. For this critical review, I have selected two articles related to tourism from
the online website of Journal of Tourism and Hospitality Management and I have referenced
these two articles for the purpose of in-text citation.

The turnitin score for this critical review was 5% that is well under the university-
accepted level of 10%. In order to keep the level of plagiarism low, I have written various
portions of this article in my own words. This process has helped me to keep the plagiarism level
under 10%.
