Introduction
The last fifty years of the twentieth century can be referred to as the “latter half of the 20th
Century”. On the other hand, the term tourism trends can be referred to as the generation
direction or manner, in which an aspect is transforming or developing. At present, tourism has
been capable of becoming a segment of the lives of various people due to a number of reasons,
such as conducting business, going for a holiday, visiting family and friends and many others.
During the period mentioned above, the industry of travel and tourism has gone through
evolution all across the world. During this time, the rate of global tourism has elevated in a rapid
manner, due to various factors such as increases in wages and salaries, availability of various
kinds of cost effective tour packages and many others. In this study, the major trends related to
the sector of travel and tourism during the latter half of the 20th century will be discussed in a
critical manner.

The most important trend related to travel and tourism towards the latter part of the 20th century
was the rapid increase of international tourism. During this time, people started earning more,
which allowed them to travel to the foreign countries, which in turn gave rise to mass
international tourism. Moreover, during this time the accessibility of transportation had
improved as well, providing the tourism industry the scope of developing. In addition to that,
improvements in the communication system, such as roads, as specifically the motorways had
decreased the time required to drive from one location to the other. This in turn, encouraged
more number of individuals to go for short trips. On the other hand, during the same time,
decrease in the airfares, along with cost effective holiday packages, as well as more efficient
and larger airports also encouraged the travellers in the same manner.
According to Baum (1996), global tourism arrivals during the period of 1950 were estimated at
around 25 million. By the end of the 21st century, it is predicted to increase to at least 600
million. During the latter part of the 21st century, travel and tourism had transformed from an
elite activity towards a status of mass consumption, but only within the developed world. This in
turn had affected the nature of employment in the concerned sector. In addition to that, it also
influenced the relationship between the tourism service providers, and the travellers as
consumers. The Grand Tour can be held accountable as the ancestor of the modern mass
tourism. Originally, it was a selective and primarily an aristocratic privilege, providing an
educational journey, which is classical in nature, starting form the destination of Britain for
covering Italy, France, Germany, Switzerland, along with the Low Countries (ThoughtCo.com,
2019). The initial beginning of Grand Tour along with the related travelling to the resorts and spa
fashionable in nature was a normal activity of the aristocrats of the people living in the United
