The Project explains the concept of
Tracheostomy and its clinical care.
It analyzes the review of reliable sources of

helping the nurses to plan for tracheostomy care.

Tracheostomy
Tracheostomy is a clinical procedure to make
a surgical opening in the neck to reach
trachea (Crosbie, Cairney & Calder, 2014).
It is preferred in medical conditions where
ventilators are used for longer time or the
airway is narrowed down or blocked (Berney,
Wasserfallen & Grant, 2014).
The purpose of this report is to illustrate the
principles involved in the post operative care
of patients with tracheostomy.

Clinical Relevance
It will help me develop my knowledge about
implementing effective nursing care plans for
the patients having undergone tracheotomy.
Tracheotomy patients are at high risk of
infection and blockages in the tracheostomy
which requires extreme care.
Lack of knowledge imposes pressure on the
nursing students to identify the
contraindications, signs of infection and
handle emergency care.

Why important to care for these patients?
Lack of timely care may turn into
complications such as bleeding from the
tracheostomy tube, infection of stoma site,
accidental decannulation, tracheo-oesophageal
fistula, respiratory collapse, and air leakage
(Martin, Freeth, Kelly & Mason, 2014).
Benner emphasized on the need of practical
knowledge in critical care units which comes
through experience (Acebedo-Urdiales,
Medina-Noya & Ferré-Grau, 2014).

Why important to care for these patients?
The care for tracheostomy involves a
multidisciplinary care provided by allied,
medical and nursing professionals in a
collaborative manner.
There is a high gap reported between the
research and practice of nursing graduates in
most of the literature reviews (Higgins, 2019).
Tracheostomy patients have special
pathological issues which directly impact their
mortality and morbidity.

Why important to care for these patients?
The number of tracheostomy patients is
increasing regularly in acute care wards.
Nursing staff caring for them must possess
the skills and knowledge in both the practical
and theoretical perspectives (Higgins, 2019).
Principles of care for these patients includes
maintaining the patient safety, improving the
level of communication with them and
eliminating the complications associated with
the surgical procedure.
