INTRODUCTION
Dr. Tracy Shildrick is a senior Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Newcastle.
She makes her contribution in the welfare of the community such that she is a co-author of
Poverty and insecurity and also won the Peter Townsend 2013 Prize. Her research promotes
youngsters to understand about worklessness, poverty and social exclusion. Hence, it is
clearly reflected that Tracy Shildrick contribute her best for the welfare of society. Most of
her research has focus upon the young people and she interested in issues related to
employment, low pay of people and welfare reform. She also have a specific interest in North
East and much of them are conducted in Teesside. Apart from this, the lady also offer
supervision to post graduates research students of different areas such as youth transition,
youth cultures, social class, inequality, employment work and welfare, and austerity.
The current study will explore the contribution made by Tracy Shildrick in order to
make development of society, as she also quite interested in social policy. Further, study will
helps to determine the research methods used by the lady in order to make her research
successful so that youth encourages to read the same.
Contribution of Tracy Shildrick made for the development of policy
Tracy Shildrick written the article in 2017 name as ‘Poverty, politics and a new kind
of class war?’ in which she stated that over the recent year’s poverty has re- emerged as a
popular topic in UK. Such that the article will help to let people understands about this and
then start aware with this concepts. As in UK, there are number of people who experiencing
poverty increase and as a result, it is a deliberate consequence of punitive policies (Fisher,
2020). She also explain that poverty and welfare are now consider almost a universal social
problem which is self- inflicted. In addition to this it is also shared by Tracy Shildrick that
poverty and economic insecurity has emerged as at least one of the key issue which is risen
when UK leave European Union. Such that many evidence also suggested that some of the
groups are anger or frustration at being locked out while some of them forced to leave the
country (MacDonald, Shildrick and Furlong, 2020).
Tracy Shildrick also share the views in the article where Teesside history is discussed
in which it is mention that unemployment is not a life style which is chosen by the people but
actually people wanted jobs but they got low paid and insecure which is not used (Poverty,

of jobs, especially better quality employment.
On the other side, another contribution which Tracy made is such that she attend the
first Global Youth Policy Forum as an invited experts. It was the first event where she met
with 700 youth policy leaders and professionals to debate the ways to improve the policy and
practise among young people (Shildrick, 2018). As she was invited in expert professor and
that is why she took participate in contributing her expertise to range of policy debates related
to recent crisis such that employment and poverty. She also provides her views in which
range of solutions are offered to the public so that they minimize the problem.
Apart from this, another contribution she made in her life when she speak at the
Festival of Social Science Event where she speak about ‘Does Poverty Porn’ Undermine the
Welfare State? In this she had presented her research on poverty and also tries to creates
awareness among people so that they will not do work at low wages (Professor Tracy
Shildrick invited to speak and research at upcoming events, 2020). As this event is a part of
Economic and Social Research council’s festivals of Social Science which seeks to raise the
profit of social science research and also explore different ways that contribute to society as
well. Tracy took advantage of this situation and also raise many questions that helps to let
people understand about the serious issue i.e. poverty and low pay.
The lady also share the close association between the poverty and individual
behaviour which means that it can sometimes more difficult for others such that
unemployment. Also, in her speech, she used sociologist concept of social class extensively
in their research and agree that social class has an economic base. That is why, she focused
upon the consumption rate and due to poverty most of the people do not spend the amount as
per their need and this in turn increase the poverty rate as well (Social Perspectives on
poverty, 2020). Also, she concluded that poverty is consider a popular social issue among all
and that is why, there is a need to solve. It is so because it allows to understand the personal
trouble which is a part of an economic and political institution of a society. In this way she
recently get an attention and then discuss the things with inequality. She also collected much
sociological evidence in which she continuously reviewed that inequality is also increases
from last many years.
Therefore, it is clearly reflected that Tracy Shildrick make her best effort in order to

companies (Shildrick, 2018). As per the law specified under the government, in which
employer has to pay minimum amount to the employees and this in turn increase the attention
of many people. Therefore, she thinks that there is a need to let people know about the reality
so that it will assist to understand about poverty and people think about the issues and assist
to solve the problem at some level. Hence, she contribute at her best and tries to explore the
solutions as well.
Research methods used by Tracy Shildrick
In order to make contribution to the society, Tracy Shildrick uses only secondary
research methods. As she belongs to the sociology and that is why, she has keep interest in
such things. That is why, she first analyse the social issues and then make decision to solve
the same. For that, she understand the term poverty from a sociological theory perspective
and determine that it is a negative stereotypes by the institution such that public and welfare
delivery services also do not perform anything and this in turn increase poverty (Woodman,
Shildrick and MacDonald, 2020). Hence, through this type of research methods, in which
different books and journals were already analysed which assist to let Tracy Shildrick
understood that society is facing from the issues which needs to be resolved.
Therefore, it is clearly reflected that through this method, lady identified as poverty is
one of the biggest issue and that is why, though there are many policy introduced by the
government which is examine through the previous studies i.e. secondary research. That is
why, this method are consider reliable and lots of information is available in books and
internet that also assist Tracy Shildrick to make decision. After proper study, she realized that
communities or societies are not properly aware with issues. Hence, she start writing journals
for youth in which young people encourage them to determine the problem and examine

through the secondary research, the lady determine the current trend of the country and then
realize that people faces issue. In addition to this, this methods are preferred over others
because it is more reliable and provide proper information as compared to others. Also this
type of data are easily accessible as compared to other, as it is available on different
platforms and that is why, it is used by Tracy Shildrick (Bartley, 2020).

From the above report it has been concluded that Tracy Shildrick contribute their best
in order to develop the policy and let people understand about the policy for poverty and
unemployment. It is also evaluated that the lady perform their best in order to encourage
people to understand the issues because it affect the entire country in opposite manner.
Moreover, it is analysed that in her books and journals it is analysed that the lady also
examine the relationship between personal, family and lobar market research in which she
explain about the low pay and no pay scale. Hence, it is examine that the current study also
concluded that Tracy uses secondary research methods in order to make decision such that
she realised that poverty is a big issue through secondary study in which it is mention that
UK faces this issue and most of the employees are suffering from low pay as well.
