The Usual Suspects is a well-known neo-noir mystery film of the year 1995. The film
was directed by Bryan Singer and had Christopher McQuarrie as the writer of the film. The
film deals with the interrogation of a con man named Roger “Verbal” Kint who is shown one
of the only two survivors of a ship on fire in the port of Los Angeles. Kint is shown to be
answering an interrogator about how he and his friends were found on the boat and how a
drug lord named Keyser Soze controlled them.
The purpose of the essay is to analyse the trailer and full movie of The Usual Suspects
and find out how it is different from each other.
I feel that when the viewer starts analysing the trailer of the film, the viewers find that
the trailer has both similarities and differences between the movie. When one starts watching
the trailer of the movie, the trailer starts with gloomy and dark skin which symbolises murder
and death followed by its introduction of the main characters and the plot of the story. From
the trailer itself, I got the idea that it is a neo-noir movie judging by its dark and gloomy
theme. The trailer is basically an information about the things that are to happen in the movie.
It is by seeing the trailer that the viewer understands what the movie will be about. By
analysing, the trailer of The Usual Suspects, the viewer will basically get an idea of the kinds
of things that they can expect from the movie. I feel that this helps the viewer to prepare
themselves whether they want to see the movie or not. The Usual Suspects analysis is meant
to find how the trailer and the movie is different from each other.
The Usual Suspects as a movie is quite different from The Usual Suspects as a movie
trailer. The Usual Suspects, as a movie is much larger than the trailer which is around 2:25
minutes. While watching both the trailer and the movie, the movie is more detailed than the
trailer in the sense that it shows the whole story that the movie is about. The movie is about

how four friends get involved in a crime and how it ultimately concludes in a boat where only
two persons managed to survive. The movie trailer, though short, manages to portray accurate
parts of the movie within 2:25 seconds. The trailer manages to portray that the movie is
about crime, what the major characters are and what are they up to. It is from the trailer itself
that the viewers get an idea of the things that are about to unfold in the movie. It gives the
readers a hint about what kind of crime Roger and his companions are about to involve
themselves in the movie. The trailer is accurate in portraying the mood and atmosphere of the
movie which is true in keeping up with the genre of the movie. The trailer notifies the
viewers about the kind of atmosphere that is used in a neo-noir movie which is correctly
portrayed in the entire movie. Also, the main characters are highlighted accurately in the
trailer which has been accurately portrayed in the similar manner in the movie itself. The
trailer gives the first time viewers an idea about the tone and story of the film which has been
portrayed. The trailer also accurately portrays the music of the film which is in keeping up
with the theme of neo-noir films of that time. It acts a hint to the people informing about the
things that is going to happen in the film. The trailer is always an important part of any film.
The viewers can make their ideas based on the films whether they would like to watch the
film or not. In many ways, the trailer of The Usual Suspects manages to portray a lot of
things accurately portrayed in the movie.
Similarly, in many ways, there are a number of things in the movie that the trailer of
the movie does not manage to capture properly at all. First of all, it does not accurately
portray the story of the movie. The viewers can fully understand what the story of the film is
about just by watching the trailer of the movie. Similarly, the trailer is alone sufficient for the
viewers to guess the direction that the story would be talking in the movie. The movie is
always much more detailed than the trailer about what kind of story it will be about. For
understanding the story of the movie, it is always necessary for the viewer to watch the movie

as the trailer is too short to understand the entire story. Similarly, in the case of The Usual
Suspects, the trailer is fully not able to portray the movie as it is too short and as it would ruin
the movie itself by showing the story in the trailer. I think the trailer of the film manages to
keep the surprises and the suspense in the story itself so that would be reserved for the
audience when they visit the theatres for the movie. Thus, the movie is always the real part,
the trailer is made to just draw the Audience’s interest. In the case of The Usual Suspects, the
audience cannot guess the ending of the movie just by watching the trailer. This made me feel
neither can they find out the true identity of the culprit in the movie trailer just by watching
the trailer of the movie. As far as I am concerned, the movie should be watched to fully
understand what the story plot is and that is what I feel that the rest of the audience should
also think. Apart from this, I feel that the trailer also does not portray the various themes that
has been presented in the movie owing to its short duration. I feel that this is because the
trailer of the movie is too short which makes it difficult to incorporate everything in the
movie.
The Usual Suspects is one of the best movies to have ever been made in the world. I
feel that the trailer itself should not be sufficient enough for an individual to understand what
movie is about. As far as I am concerned, movies should always be watched after watching
the trailer as then I feel the audience would get a clue about the topic of the movie. Movies
are meant to hind the audience about their story through the teasers and trailers. I think that
The Usual Suspects trailer manages to portray a lot about the movie accurately like its
atmosphere, music and of course the idea about what the story of the movie is about. Thus, I
feel that The Usual Suspects is one of the greatest movies to ever have been made in the
world. To conclude, I would say that while the movie trailer is undoubtedly one of the most
important part of the movie, I would conclude by stating that it is always the movie that really
tells its story to the audience.
