Primary Question #1:
Fill in Category
Communication
Student’s Question: Please share your experience in
learning English as a second language with me.
Individual’s Answer: I did not experience any challenges
learning English in the U.S. English has been taught to the
residents of Hong Kong when they are enrolled in a school.
As a result, English has been converted to be the most
imperative second language in Hong Kong. I was already
fluent in English when I arrived in United States.
Follow-up a. Student’s Question: Share an experience about a time when you
or a family member had to look out for assistance in
communicating with a healthcare provider.

always needs help when he visits his primary care GP. I
always accompany him to his appointments because he has
trouble comprehending English, and the medical terminology
that his GPs use. Since I am a Registered Nurse, I understand
the medical terminology and I can interpret to my father in
Cantonese, our vernacular language.
Follow-up b. Student’s Question: Please share with me your favored
method for communicating.
Individual’s Answer: I am fluent in both English and
Cantonese. I communicate with my parents in Cantonese
while I use English with my co-workers. It is for the majority
of the time that I speak English.
Primary Question #2:

Economic
Student’s Question: Please share the procedure in obtaining
a health insurance in your homeland.
Individual’s Answer: The healthcare system in Hong Kong is
distributed in two divisions: public and the private health care.
If an individual chooses the public health insurance, they need
not apply for the private health insurance. The government
offers all health care amenities free or charge for a minor fee.
However, if an individual chooses the private healthcare
insurance, a good health insurance is needed to sustain the

exorbitant medical bills.
Follow-up a. Student’s Question: Please share with me your experience
of attaining health treatment in your current state.
Individual’s Answer:
In the state of California, obtaining health service is not that
hard. It can be obtained through your employer, if you are a
full-time employee. If your income is below a satisfactory
level, the government provides the individual with medical
benefits. You can also apply for private insurance through the
marketplace if you want. Since I work at the veteran’s
hospital, our employer offers a great health insurance benefit.
They have many numbers of health insurance plans for all
employees and its 100% covered.
Follow-up b. Student’s Question: Please share with me about your
knowledge of the Affordable Care Act, which is also known
as the Obama Care.
Individual’s Answer: I believe that the objective of Obama
Care is to make it inexpensive for individuals to procure
health insurance. Obama Care works by mandating that
everyone should either pay a tax or get health insurance.
Affordable Care Act also inflates Medic Aid to more
financially-challenged people.

Background education.
Individual’s Answer: Our culture in Hong Kong values our
education more than extracurriculars, social life, or
relationships. The public-sector schools operated by the
government and charitable organizations offer free 12 years of
primary and secondary education to all children.
Follow-up a. Student’s Question: Please share your educational
incidences from your country as well as the current state of
residence with me.
Individual’s Answer: I grew up in Hong Kong and I also
attended USC in California state for my nursing degree. From
my experience, pupils in Hong Kong are less liberated than
American students. In Hong Kong, pupils will come back
home every weekend to devote time to their kin. Some pupils
only use their dorm room as storage space and go back home
every day after class. On the other hand, American students
are more independent. Staying alone has helped me in
learning to cook for myself, manage finances and do laundry.
This gesture of visiting families by paying respect holds
importance in Asian cultures. My trips to Hong Kong are
much easier because of it being a small region.
Follow-up b. Student’s Question: Please share the plans that you are

considering for expansion in your education.
Individual’s Answer: I am planning on enrolling myself for
the master’s degree. I am undecided right now because of the
cost and my children. I am trying to save more money this
year, and hopefully I can apply for the school by early next
year.
Primary Question #4:
Fill in Category Nutrition
Student’s Question: Please describe your nutritional choices
which are in line with your culture.
Individual’s Answer: Most people in Hong Kong prefer
eating Cantonese-style Chinese food with soups in their
meals. A classic Cantonese food is dim sum, also known as
yam chah, which is a small snack cooked in bamboo steamers.
This meal is popularly eaten in every household every day. I
think our culture affected my nutritional choices a lot. I
prefers to cook and eat Chinese or other kind of Asian food
most of the time and I think they are healthier than American
food.
iFollow-up a. Student’s Question: Please describe your daily food intake.
Individual’s Answer: For breakfast, I drink a cup of coffee
and ear boiled egg. For lunch, I mostly eat salad or sandwich
from cafeteria at work. For dinner, I mostly cook Chinese or
Korean food for my family. I enjoy making Korean style galbi
or grilled fish, always complemented with rice and a

vegetable.
Follow-up b. Student’s Question: Please share any cultural remedies by
foods that you have observed which can treat illnesses.
Individual’s Answer: It is known that consuming Asian pear
with rock sugar can help treat dry cough. Carving out the
seeds off the pear after skinning and cutting out the top-most
part like a lid off the fruit. Fill the hole with goji berries and
rock sugar. Steam the fruit by putting the top part on the fruit.
This will relieve the individual off the dry cough.
Primary Question #5:
Fill in Category: Religion
and Spirituality
Student’s Question: Share with me about the primary
religion practiced in Hong Kong.
Individual’s Answer: Most residents in China practice a folk
region which is a blend of Taoism, Buddhism and worship of
the ancestor. Nearly all people have been conducting religious
ceremonies in funerals regardless of their viewpoint of not
being religious. Certain numbers are reflected to be lucky,
while others are unlucky. It has been observed that people go
to temples to consult about their problems to God while
asking for food-luck and protection.
Follow-up a. Student’s Question: Please describe whether religion plays a
huge role in the lives of the people residing in Hong Kong.
Individual’s Answer: The bulk of people shadow Chinese
customary religion in Hong Kong. This is a muddle of

Course Project Reflections
(100 points)
The project helped me in conducting a culturally-sensitive
nursing assessment. During the interview I learned that, how
much value is conferred on the culture of Hong Kong which
creates a progressive impact on my nursing practice. It offered
me with an idea of dealing with a patient from the same origin
as the interviewee. It was while communicating with her that I
understood the importance of considering an individual’s own
