1TRANSFORMATIONAL LEARNING THEORY
The theory of transformative learning was propagated by Jack Mezirow in order to
describe the manner in which individuals may develop their critical self-reflection to be able
to be more open towards changes (Taylor, 2017). The scope of transformational learning goes
beyond the simple acquisition of knowledge, thereby enabling the individuals to reflect and
think critically. In this regard, it can be mentioned that transformational learning induces far-
reaching change among individuals through the identification of the benefits of undergoing
change processes (Bell et al.,2016).
My experience of transformative learning involves a more open minded approach in
dealing and associating with individuals belonging from different cultural backgrounds or
religious communities. I had never had the opportunity to interact with individuals belonging
from different cultural backgrounds as I received my education from a local school. When I
went to high-school, an exchange program was conducted due to which various students from
different schools came to study with us. It was an uncomfortable situation for me at the
beginning as I did not know how I should interact with them. However, our teacher helped us
to be acquainted with each other and formed groups in the class for assignments. This
process allowed me to interact with students from different cultural backgrounds, some of
whom have still kept in touch. I can regard this experience as that of transformational
learning, because the exchange program at our school allowed me to gather knowledge and
understanding about cultural differences and how they may be overcome in group activities.
My experience of transformational learning has enabled me to be more open minded
and adaptive towards changes. It has also transformed my value system as an individual and
made me a team-worker. Furthermore, I also got the opportunity to learn about the values and
cultures of different individuals and adapt certain aspects that I felt were worth imbibing in
myself.
