TRAVEL AND TOURISM
INDUSTRY

INTRODUCTION
• Travel and tourism industry is expanding at a high rate. Recently, many people prefer to travel to tourist
destination to spend some leisure time.
• Moreover, with rise in income level of people their needs and wants are changed. Besides this, trends in
tourism sector has emerged which has resulted in attracting more people. The PPT will describe about
milestone in tourism sector and how it has shaped it. Also, elements of sector will be explained.

Key milestone in development of travel and tourism industry
In tourism sector there were many developments that occurred. It laid down the expansion of industry and
shaping it. The milestones are as follows :-
• 1936- first holiday camp was opened by billy Butlin
• 1938- holiday with pay act was launched
• 1940- near western super mare first holiday was opened by Fred pontin
• 1950- horizon introduced its first holiday package air.
• 1952-1959- the first jet airline passenger services was started

• 1960’s – the domestic holiday was exceeded to 30 million and foreign rise to 3.5 million. Also, american
airline developed its global distribution system.
• 1976- tourism act was formulated
• 1983- almost 77% of British workers spent 4 weeks holiday in a year.
• 1995 le shuttle and Eurostar carried passengers through channel tunnel.
• 1998- 1.4 million people purchased travel tickets online.

Along with it, there are many other factors that shape tourism sector. They are as follows
• Rise of sea side resorts and holiday camps- the holiday camps allowed children and parents to spend leisure
time. Many entertainment activities were held in that.
• Increasing use of car- after second world war, there was rise in car ownership. Many people purchase car
and use it for travelling. It led to building of roads and transportation.
• Jet aircraft – it was another positive milestone in tourism sector. It allowed people to travel quickly from
one destination to another. Later demand of jet airways was increased as well.

Different elements of travel and tourism sector
There are various elements of travel and tourism industry which supports to gain high profitability in industry
and assists to establish good relation with tourist by offering desirable goods and services. Generally elements
are classified in parts direct and indirect elements where direct elements leads profitability in industry
because they offer theses elements to tourist. Direct elements are-
• Support services- Travel and tourism industry possess various services such as information facilities,
guiding services and money exchanges services & drawing facilities etc. So that number of tourist attracts
and purchases services.
• Accommodation & transportation services- Industry offers transportation services for tourist so that they
can easy to visit destination place rather to wasting time to planning. Travel industry offers airline services
to tourist where they can take advantage to visit destination.

• Ancillary services- Travel and tourism industry providers hospitality services to tourist along with airline
services. To raise tourist experience company provides additional services such as spa, yoga, on beach and
luxurious restaurant services etc. Such kind services creates line among competitive industries.
• Serving different purpose- Industry offers wide scale services but all relevant to different purposes such
as wedding purpose, conference purpose, social events and business meeting etc. The main purpose of this
services to meet each type of customers objectives so that they enables to consume services.
