Task 1
Introduction
The article focuses on understanding the concepts and approaches to the self-managed learning
that supports the assistant manager in enhancing their skills and knowledge so that they may
impart adequate services within the hotel.
1.1. Evaluate approaches to self-managed learning. Which approach can be more suitable for you
or your staff at Travelodge Hotel
In simpler terms, self-managed learning can be defined as a concept in which a person learns
about new things and acquire knowledge through work, society, and surroundings (Olsen, 2015).
The process of self-managed learning consists of three major stages which are setting up the
goal, defining the overall objectives of learning and developing strategies to accomplish those
objectives. The key approaches to self-managed learning which I and the staff members working
in Travelodge Hotel can use are mentioned below as:
Seminars and conferences – It can be asserted that attending different seminars and conferences
is one of the most convenient ways or approaches which can be taken into consideration by staff
members of Travelodge Hotel for self-managed learning. The employees and I can identify our
skill and knowledge gap and attend various conferences and seminars to eliminate the same.
Kolb’s learning model – It can be termed as one of the most effective approaches to self-
managed learning which can be implemented by the staff members working in the Travelodge
Hotel. According to the selected model, the employees can choose four major strategies to
accomplish their learning goals. For example, the concrete experience is a strategy under which
the staff members or I can learn new things by doing the same. On the other side of this,
reflective observation is a strategy in which self-managed learning can be carried out by
reflecting on different experiences.

1.2. Propose ways in which lifelong learning in personal and professional contexts could be
encouraged at Travelodge. In this question, you should say how you as a manager can encourage
lifelong learning at Travelodge Hotel.
In the modern era, there are wide ranges of tools and techniques available for encouraging
lifelong learning in the professional and personal context. As an assistant manager working in
the Travelodge Hotel, I believe that SWOT analysis is one of the most useful techniques which
can be taken into consideration to promote lifelong learning. I can encourage the staff members
working in the Travelodge Hotel to conduct their own SWOT analysis as the analysis will
support them in identifying their core strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities. Based on
the learning or information acquired from the SWOT analysis, the staff members can develop
their learning plan or strategy to facilitate lifelong learning (Sangster, 2017). On the other side of
this, encouraging the employees to carry out self-reflection is also a critical way which I as an
assistant manager in Travelodge Hotel will be using to encourage lifelong learning. According to
the selected way, I will encourage the staff members to carry out a review of their judgments,
suggestions, ideas, and opinions made. The result of this review is that it will help the team
members to acquire new concepts, things and at the same time, will assist them to enhance their

personal skills in the best possible manner.
1.3. Evaluate the benefits of self-managed learning to you as an assistant manager and the Travel
Lodge. Your judgement has to be supported by relevant evidence or examples
The concept of self managed learning provides several benefits to individual and organization
and the key benefits are provided below as:
Benefits to Travelodge Hotel
Improvement in decision-making- The approaches of self managed learning will directly
contribute in enhancing the overall decision making process within the selected business
enterprise. The statement can be justified by the fact that self managed learning will help the
employees in improving their decision-making skills and this will further result in improving the
decision making of the overall organization (Davies et al. 2017).
Enhancing the productivity – It can be expressed that the overall productivity of Travelodge
Hotel will be improved as the organization will be operating with highly skilled and competent
employees (Evers and Van der Heijden, 2017).
Personal benefits
Improvement in communication skills – As an assistant manager in Travelodge Hotel, I will be
able to enhance my communication skills by using different approaches to self managed
learning.
Problem solving skills – I believe that I will also able to carry out significant improvement in my
problem solving skills by employing different approaches of self managed learning.

Task 2
2.1. Evaluate your own current skills and competencies against professional standards for a hotel
manager and against organisational objectives of Travelodge Hotel
SWOT analysis is the tool which I have taken into consideration with an objective to carry out
assessment of my skills and competencies. Furthermore, my SWOT analysis is carried out below
as:
Table 1: Personal SWOT analysis
Strengths
Effective customer relationship skills
Negotiation skills
Encouraging and motivating team
Weaknesses
Issues in managing stress
Ineffective time management
Lack of digital skills
Opportunities
Attending seminars and works
Self managed learning
Attending training sessions
Threats
Increasing demand of managers with digital
skills
Competitive job market
Lack of growth opportunities
From the above conducted SWOT analysis, it has been identified that effective customer
relationship and negotiation skills are my core strengths as these skills have supported me in
meeting the standards of Travelodge Hotel. Apart from this, I am also very good in motivating
others and this can be termed as another critical strength which I have. However, it can be argued
that I need to work on areas such as managing stress and time to become more productive and
meet the standard of hotel and industry (Gaskov et al. 2016). Inadequate and ineffective digital
skills are also major weakness which is creating issues and obstacles in my growth and success. I

believe that attending training sessions, seminars and workshops are some opportunities which I
have to overcome my weaknesses. On the other side of this, increasing competition in the job
market and growing demand of managers with digital skills are some major threats for me.
