Task 1
P1. Be able to determine own responsibilities and performance
An organisation always has the expectation from its workers that they can fulfil their job
responsibilities with efficiency according to their positions (O’Connor and Bodicoat, 2017).
Hence, it is a responsibility for the employees and the employers of a respective organization to
finish the provided tasks successfully within time.
P1.1 – Develop a set of own responsibilities and performance objectives
Travelodge is a UK based organisation which operates a hotel business. The importance of the
Human resource manager position is vital for the organisation. All the activities regarding the
employment need to be successfully achieved by the HR manager (Tsai, 2017). As a HR
manager of the organisation, I have my own responsibilities and the objectives of my
performances which I need to fulfil. According to my point of view, my responsibilities and
performances are mentioned below.
Preparing appropriate plans for the recruitment process that falls under the personal
responsibilities of a HR manager.
Conducting recruitment and selection procedures for the new talented candidates
Developing of a strategic compensation and monitoring the process of providing several
benefits to the employees
Monitoring of the employees’ performance in the workplace
Arranging the proper training and development programs for the growth of professional
career of the employees
Providing performance appraisal to the staffs of the organisation through increment and
promotion and rewards.
Motivating the workers in the workplace in order to enhance the productivity of the
organisation
Apart from the above responsibilities, certain more tasks are there that needs to be followed by
the respective position of the concerned organization such as, maintaining indirect and direct
responsibilities with the stakeholders of the organization through following an effective process

of communication (Pandey and Pandey, 2015). An HR manager should consist of the skills for
the process of making effective decision regarding the concerned organization. This helps the
managers to take important decisions within the organizational culture like organizing, planning,
staffing and similar others. Flexibility is the key word for the respective role of HR manager to
follow the rules and regulations of the present organizational environment. However,
employment legislation is also known to be one of the important aspects that need to be followed
within a company (Boniface et al., 2016). This provides the employees with the rights and
responsibilities of the employees.
P1.2 – Evaluate own effectiveness against defined objectives
There are several tasks that I have performed as a HR manager of the organisation. My
performance has been effective to complete all the tasks. Moreover, in few cases, my
performance was not effective as per my expectation because of some difficulties.
Effective performance
I have selected the potential candidates for the respective positions through the interview
and screening as per their talent, skill and experience.
I have conducted training and development program for the new candidates for the initial
periods of time.
I have kept the track record of the strengths, weaknesses, knowledge and attitude of the
new staffs during the training sessions.
I have maintained the security level of the workers by communicating with them and
helping them to overcome the legal issues.
Less effective performance
Keeping all the information of the employees in the soft copies and the hard copies
Providing the performance appraisal due to some legal issues
Maintaining the complaint cell for the employees to solve their problems

P1.3 – Make recommendations for improvement
As per my opinion, I need to improve myself to fulfil my tasks successfully as a HR manager of
the organisation. Hence, I would like to recommend some required activities to myself that
should be accomplished for the improvement of my performance. Regarding the improvement,
setting the performance objectives can be helpful for the employees within the organizational
culture. These objectives are mentioned below:
These includes effective monitoring of the performance objectives related to the
employees
Appraisal systems for the individuals can also be applied such as, increase of the saly
along with providing bonus payments
Promotions can also be provided to the employees along with their strengths (Bowen,
2016). However, it might lead to some weaknesses such as increase of responsibilities.
But, it can also be handled through following a systematic working way.
To achieve all the above objectives, proper training and guidance needs to be provided to
the employees for boosting their morale and making them confident for delivering their
work in an efficient as well as effective manner.
P1.4 Review how motivational techniques can be used to improve quality of performance
Motivation is key word for the employees in the workplace to finish the works successfully
(Salas et al., 2015). Without motivating an employee, the positive result of a task cannot be
found. There are several theories and techniques that are utilised by the HR manager in order to
motivate the employees. It helps the organisation to enhance the productivity and profitability.
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
This is a motivational theory and technique that identifies the human needs that must be fulfilled
to encourage the employees in the workplace. This theory was introduced by famous
psychologist Abraham Maslow in 1943. The management of the organisation needs to fulfil
safety need, esteem needs, physiological needs, needs of love and belongingness and self-
actualization needs.

The organisation needs to make the job career of the employees safe and secure (Mone
and London, 2018). Hence, the organisation has to introduce new laws and legal policies
for the safety and the security of the employees.
The management of the organisation needs to maintain the good communication with the
employees so that they feel respected and valued. The HR managers should hear their
issues carefully and solve as quickly as possible.
The organisation has to build good interpersonal relationship with the staffs to motivate
them in their work. They should arrange a healthy meeting and discussion about the work
performance of the employee. This may lead to an enhancement of relationship, trust and
acceptance between the management and the employees.
The organisation needs to provide the basic fundamental needs to the employees. The
management has to ensure that the employees can avail their canteen facilities whenever
they want.
It is necessary for the organisation to fulfil the self-actualization needs of the employees.
It may help the management to know the performance development of the employees and
the employees also can understand their potential and their certain limitations.
Performance appraisal should be the ideal way to fulfil this needs.

Herzberg’s Two Factor Theories

Frederick Herzberg has introduced this model in 1959. The internal and external forces of an
organisation are vital as these can be the major impact on behaviours of the employees. The
management of the organisation should take care of these to increase the motivation of the
workers. According to the theory, different techniques can be identified and the management
should follow these techniques.
The management should ask the employees for the participation in the process of making
decisions in order to encourage and motivate them. In this way, the employees can further
make their decisions regarding their work independently which can help them to be
confident and motivated.
The management should consider the time flexibility as a technique to motivate the
employees as well. In this way, a good and healthy job environment can be created in the
workplace. This can help to increase the productivity of the organisation.
The best way to motivate an employee is by appraising their performance. The
management needs to develop reward system, incentive and promotion, yearly bonus as
performance appraisal. So that, the employees of the organisation can give their best
effort in the workplace.

Besides the above theories, there are certain motivational techniques that can be used within the
respective organization of Travelodge. These techniques are considered as incentives and reward
systems. This helps the employees to be committed to the organization and also to be

enthusiastic. This eventually reflects within their effective productivity. Hence, the role of the
manager is to provide their employees with proper incentives along with rewards.

Task 2
P2. Be able to develop interpersonal and transferable skills
It is essential to develop interpersonal and transferable skill in order to get the positive outcome
of the given tasks (Care et al., 2015). The management of the present organisation needs to make
solutions of the problems within the workplace. Communication is known to be the key for
solving problems within the concerned organizational culture. Thus, the management should
build a strong communication level among all the departments.
P2.1 – Develop solutions to work-based problems
As a HR manager in Travelodge, I have identified different issues and problems in the
workplace. As an example, I have analysed that the major issue for the organisation is high
employee turnover rate. However, another issue that has been identified is lower level of service
These issues in the organisation can have a negative effect on the development of the business
operation (Robinson et al., 2016). There should be some changes in the structure of the work and
the solutions can be generated to solve the problems.
The management of the concerned organisation needs to maintain a good relationship
with the employee. The management should conduct a monthly meeting or discussion
with the staffs to know the issues and problems that they are facing in the workplace. In
this way, the employees may start to feel that there is someone in the company who give
trust and respect to them.
The organisation needs to develop staff friendly laws and policies by which the
employees can get the facilities they deserve (Ertas, 2015). The management has to
reconstruct the health and safety policies, law of equality, privacy policies, performance
counselling policy and many more for the betterment of the employees.
The management should focus on the performance appraisal system through the rewards,
incentive and promotion, yearly bonus.
The best solution of employee turnover issue that has been identified is, through the introduction
of friendly laws and policies related to the new staffs (Hesse et al., 2015). Based on these
policies and laws, employees can start to feel that they are safe and secure. The performance

appraisal system can be helpful to diminish the employee turnover rate as the workers may feel
that they can get the reward if they do their task efficiently.
P2.2 Communicate in a variety of styles and appropriate manner at various levels
A formal letter to the senior management:
Formal Letter
Human Resource Manager
Travelodge Hotel
Sleepy Hollow, Aylesbury Road,
Thame, Oxon
Subject: Highlighting the issue of employee turnover and low level of service in Travelodge
To,
The senior manager,
This letter is to inform that the HR management has pointed out the issues and problems that is
negatively affecting the business operation of the organisation. The major issues are high rate
of employee turnover and low level of service. These issues can be harmful for the
development of the organisation. So, the HR management has made a decision to solve these
issues as quickly as possible. The first issue has been raised due to lack of communication,
staff friendly laws and policies and the performance appraisal system. As a result, the
employees are feeling unsafe and unmotivated. And the second problem has been raised
because of not recruiting the potential candidates.
To solve these issues, HR management has made the planning of making strong staff friendly
policies and reconstructing the existing policies and performance appraisal system. It has also
been decide to make an effective non-verbal and verbal communication through awareness,
