1.2: Evaluate own effectiveness against defined objectives
As the role of HR Manager is quite important in the business’s development, so it has to perform
various responsibilities for accomplishing the pre-defined goals. For the business’s development,
the HR Manager has appointed employees full of potential, so that they can manage customers in
every scenario, no matter what the customer wants to know, those employees will meet their
demand of information. Further, the HR can only improve the services provided by keeping an
eye on the employee’s performance because only then the HR can conclude where modifications
and changes are needed, where the employees are lacking. Thomas Cook’s main objective is
worldwide expansion and to be the top travel company. The HR is making human resource
related strategies and also working on the goal achievements. So, the HR’s role is very crucial, as
they manage all the projects of the organization, also determining the costs at initial level, and
also calculating all the risks as well as benefits.
They also manage with the labours very effectively and also tackle with all the disputes so that
there must not be any unresolved issue and everyone can work with a positive attitude. They
even make proper strategies in order to minimize the cost which is associated with the business
and can control over the quality of the work. Using their brilliant communication skills, they are

1.3: Make recommendations for improvement
Thomas Cook’s HR Manager can definitely enhance the employee’s as well as its own
efficiency. There is a need of few improvements regarding the HR.
There must be different criteria for the appraisals and incentives for the different
departments.
Hike in salaries, incentive brackets and timely bonus must be there according to the
employee’s performance
Timely training to the employees, according to their performance.
There must be an analysis chart or system so that they can know where to work more for
the improvement.
A barrierless communication channel, as for how strong the communication level is will
reflect in the positive working environment.
Targets must be set for every individual, and there must a progression chart of every
individual so that they can work on the weaknesses as well as on strength of every
employee.
They must know the level of performance of every individual, and a checklist must also
be there. So that they will be aware of the performance of every individual and can work
on their weaknesses and strengths (Austin & Fine, 2017).

1.4: Review how motivational techniques can be used to improve quality of
performance
As employees are the basic assets of the company, as the growth of the company is somewhere
related to the efforts of the employees so they are always appreciated and valued for their work.
Thomas Cook uses many techniques so as to motivate and encourage their employees for
enhancing their work performance, and this thing works very well. Encouraging the employees is
very much essential for the organization, it works like the direct proportionality rule like the
more the employee is encouraged and motivated, the more will be their efficiency and work
growth rate. There is a very nice theory about the motivation, which was given by Maslow, and
is named as Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs (Haque, et al, 2015).
Figure 3: Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs.
It is defined in five levels i.e., Physiological needs, Safety needs, Belonging and love needs,
Esteem needs Self-Actualization needs. The first two needs Physiological and safety needs are
considered as Basic needs. The Esteem and Belongingness & Love needs are considered as the
Psychological needs of the employees and the Self-Actualization one is considered to be the self-
fulfilment needs of the employees (Fallatah & Syed, 2018).

Physiological needs: It includes all the elementary needs like food, warmth, rest, shelter
(Ozdemir, 2015).
Safety needs: It covers all the risk factors including the job as well as financial security,
and this is employee’s main motivation to work for the organization with full loyalty
(James, 2016).
Belongingness and Love need: It covers all the social needs, interactions (Lecce, et al,
2017).
Esteem needs: Here, the self-respect is kept in mind as this result in boosting the self-
confidence, and the target achievement is quite high then (Di & Fournier, 2017).
Self-Actualization needs: The final step, here all the thoughts are transformed into the
reality (D'Souza & Gurin, 2016).
Positive working attitude, self-motivation, setting targets at their level, positive and motivating
work environment, incentives and appraisals are the basic factors which contribute to the
performance of employees. And manager is the one, who is responsible to provide the employees
with all these factors.
Conclusion:
As per the above report, the HR and manager must motivate and encourage the employees timely
in order to get the best out of them. As the company’s growth is totally dependent on the
employee’s work and efficiency, and to get an output from them, HR and managers are the ones
who are responsible.
