Introduction
This assignment is focused to develop a manager by enhancing the knowledge criteria and
skills to work on the manager position in an organization. Development of own managerial skills
is supported to enhance the potential attainment of the personal and professional objectives.
This assignment will be based on the Travelodge hotel which is the largest hotel chain of the
UK. This report will make a comparison in the different management styles used in the different
hospitality organization. Leadership characteristics will be the next topic on which this report will
make its focus. This report will also discuss the organizational communication process used to
share information. Organizational culture and change in the Travelodge will also be discussed in
the report. This report will analyze the own management skill’s utilization. A proper SWOT
analysis will be conducted for in the context of management skills. Development opportunities
and potentials will be discussed in the report. Leading and motivating a team in an appropriate
manner with justified managerial decisions will also be discussed in the report. Role of career
development plan in the managerial and personal skills will be explained in the last of the report.
A personal development plan will be produced at the end of the report for current and future
needs.

A. Compare the different management styles that you may have observed
and discuss the leadership characteristics of the senior managers [P1.1 &
P1.2]
Management style is a method or process which is used by the managers in the organization to
manage the human resource in the organization. On the basis of the utilization and
consideration of human resources, different management styles are developed and used in the
organizations. Some of the management styles are discussed in the below to compare them –
 Democratic management style – It is used in the Travelodge hotel UK which considers
and involves the employees in the managerial decision. It is essential to consider the
employees by the higher management for the greater integration of the employees in the
organization. This management style involves the staff members of Travelodge to make
a team level decision. It supports and encourages the staff of Travelodge to produce
innovative ideas in front of the managers to implement them in the organization. This
management style is effective for employee retention and engagement but it is hard to
make a fast decision by this management style (Amanchukwu, et. al. 2015).
 Authoritative management style – This is management style in which management
and leaders have proper control and right to make a decision. Employees and staff
members are not considered by the management. This management style is used in the
Hilton Hotel which supports to make a faster decision. But the major loophole of this
management style is employee avoidance in the decision making which does not
integrate the employees for organizational betterment.
Democratic management style is effective for the employee’s perspective and authoritative
management is effective for organizational consideration. It is essential to consider employees
for long term goals attainment.
Leadership characteristics
Organizational leadership contains the leadership’s skills and potentials which support to lead to
an organization in the right direction. Some of the leadership characteristics are given below:

 Vision – It is key characteristics contained in the effective leadership. An effective leader
contains a long-term vision which supports to integrate the resources for long-term
purposes. An effective successful leader contains this quality which enhances ability to
run the organization in an effective manner.
 Integrity – A strategic planning is effectively implemented by integrating all of the
resources. Integration of teams, resources and management support to develop
effective leadership which exists in the Travelodge hotel UK.
 Co-operation – It is a required element in the leadership which enhance interpersonal
collaboration in between the teams and employees which are engaged in the
organization. An effective leader co-operates with the employees by discussing their
issues to resolve with proper co-operation of management (Thompson, 2015).

A process of sharing ideas and information among those people who are working for the same
purposes is considered as an organizational communication process. Higher management is
using the communication to flow orders and to direct the staff members. Communication
process used in the Travelodge hotel is given below –
 Sender – Generally managers in the company develop sends a message which are
orders which have to flow in the whole organization.
 Encoding – The message is encoded in word document by the management to flow it in
the organization.
 Channel – Travelodge uses its internal e-mail channel to share the message,
information, and orders in the whole management levels.
 Decoding – It is a step in which receivers decode the message and understand the
message in the same manner as the sender.
 Feedback – This is a revert action of the receiver to sender after getting the message.
This is the last step of organizational communication process (Ruck and Welch, 2012).
Organizational culture
An organizational culture contains the shared beliefs and values which develops the
psychological and social environment in the organization. The Travelodge has a hierarchy
culture which integrates the core characteristics of role culture in the organization. The hierarchy
culture supports to enhance the integration of employees on their assigned task and
responsibilities. This type of culture provides specific limited responsibilities to employees but
requires the optimum outcomes on the assigned task and roles.
Travelodge Company is working in the hospitality industry and random change in the technology
is compelling to make changes in the working process. Higher integration of technology is a part
of consideration of technology in the organization. Internal communication is based on the ICT
which has provided a faster process to communicate in the organization and supports to
manage a flow of information (Alvesson and Sveningsson, 2015).

The company is always setting some standards and plans because this will be helping and

direction or not. The manager in the Travelodge company is having the roles and
responsibilities to use the best managerial as well as leadership quality so that the set aims and
standards can be able to get meet in an effective and appropriate required manner (Anthony, et.
al., 2014). The managers of the company use the different strategies and needed plans so that
several situations can be able to get managed and handed in the best possible manner.
Leading the plans and making the people do the set plans are very important which is been get
done by the manager in the company. Below are the elements which the manager considers for
leading an motivating the employees-

The leading is one of the major aspects where the manager needs to make his contribution very
high. The leading a group of people could be obtained when the person s effectively working in

proper training and development programs. It is very important that the management f the
company has to take some actions so that the improvements in the working patterns of the
employees can be able to get done n an effective needed manner (Kossek and Lautsch, 2012).
The managerial decision made by the manager in the Travelodge company is to organize the
training and development program for the company.
Rewards system- This is another very important decision which is been made by the company
as this is very helpful for the company to make the employees motivated for their performances
and work. This is also very important and necessary factor for the company and its employees
to carry out smooth working (Smith, 2013).
Justification and recommendation
The decision made by the company's manager is very effective and useful because the
managerial decisions are helping the company to take actions and steps to carry out the
operations and factions in an effective way. There are some factors which have to be focused
more by the company so that the operations, as well as the, activate, can be able to get
performed in an effective and appropriate needed manner (Kurtz, et. al., 2016).
It is recommended to the company that the services that are been offered to the customers
have to be focused on the demands and requirements of them. For that not only the training and
reward system is needed but also the research in the market in a well-structured manner is also
needed.
