TRUMP’S IMMIGRATION POLICIES
Description of policy
US President Donald Trump highlighted the signature issue of illegal migration to the
country and he proposed reforms that were in much publicity. This policy followed economic
nationalism where Trump established “Put American First” in order to protect the workers and
industries in America reversed the decades of immigration policy in U.S. Firstly, in 2014; many
unauthorized immigrants were deported who posed major security threats to the nation. Under
the new policy directives, immigration agents focused on picking and removing people
including minors who were convicted of criminal offense (Nicholas Kulish, 2017).
Moreover, Trump’s policy has declared an end to ‘catch and release’ and illegal people
who apprehended crossing the border should be detained until they are sent back to their homes.
This deterred illegal entry into the country. “Wall on the Border with Mexico” was another
change where Trump promised to build a wall on US border with Mexico. He requested for a
proposal for designing and building of wall structures near the borders for stopping illegal
crossing from Mexico (Anderson, 2018).
Trump also announced that he would terminate “Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals
(DACA)” Directive. Those individuals eligible will be deported only after resolution of matter in
the court. However, later he announced, “Dreamers are protected” under H-1B Visa Program.
Individuals who were brought illegally to the country as children will be protected from
deportation under this act. He announced to withhold the current federal grants to sanctuary
cities or municipalities, those who refuse to cooperate with the federal immigration policies or
law enforcement (Smith, 2018).

TRUMP’S IMMIGRATION POLICIES
Critical analysis of the policy
The mass deportation is estimated to reduce the gross domestic product of US by 1.4
percent. It is also predicted that it would be a hard time for farmers in finding replacement
workers and as a result, they are forced to reduce their production to compensate the decreased
labor supply. The economic impact is high as for deporting 750,000 people who are protected by
DACA; it would cost $60 billion contributing to $28 billion to the country’s economy in a year.
Immigration adds more than $1.6 trillion to the country’s economy and a net benefit of $35 to the
companies. Out of which, 97.8% of growth returns to immigrant workers and rest is spent in
America (Amadeo, 2018).
During the period, 2000-2013, the percentage of native-born workers in US decreased by
1.3 million as they left the workforce. During this period, immigrant workers rose by 5.3 million
who arrived in America. In addition, immigrants cost between $11.4 billion and $20.2 billion to
US government each year. This shows that they use more services as compared to paying taxes.
However, they cost less to the government as compared to native-born Americans with similar
work and education experiences. The graduated immigrants add $105,000 revenue as compared
to the services they use during their lifetime. This illustrates that immigrants living in US cost
less than native ones and if amnesty were granted to them, the costs to the nation would double
(Amadeo, 2018). However, with this policy, it is not possible and devastatingly affecting the US
economy.
