AI Summary
This report presents a comprehensive analysis of water quality in Hong Kong's typhoon shelters, focusing on dissolved oxygen (DO) and ammonia nitrogen levels. The study examines data from 2007 to 2016, collected from various shelters including Aberdeen, Cheung Chau, and others. The methodology involves data collection from sources like research papers and magazines, followed by analysis using Python libraries such as Pandas, Seaborn, NumPy, and Matplotlib. The results, presented through graphs and statistical analysis, reveal trends in DO and nitrogen concentrations across different locations. The report highlights compliance with Water Quality Objectives (WQO) and discusses variations in water quality, concluding with insights into environmental changes within the shelters. The appendix includes the Python code used for data analysis, graph creation and confidence interval.

ABSTRACT
The objective of this work is to find the water quality in Typhoon shelters by comparing
dissolved oxygen (DO) levels and Ammonia Nitogen Levels). With the increase in pollution the
content of the water changes and therby leading to water pollution. This report gives an
overview about the amount of oxygen levels and nitrogen levels present in the water. The
graphs present in the above report shows the trend with which the level of various components
has changed in recent years.By this report a thorough understanding of water quality in
Typhoon shelters can be made resulting in proper understanding of the scenario.

INTRODUCTION
The fishing boats is kept in a shelter called Typhoon shelters. The typhoons here means a kind
of cyclone. We can see these kind of facilities in various city and HONG KONG is one of
them. These kind of shelters resembles a bay. They provides shelter for small and medium kind
of ships when a very heavy typhoon strikes. They usually have very small or we could say
narrow openings. There are several shelters present of this kind in HONG KONG namely
Aberdeen Typhoon Shelters (South/West), Cheung Chau, Hei Ling Chau, Kwun Tong, Rambler
Channel etc. Because of it’s everydays use they are getting polluted day by day. There is a
report which states that in 2008, According to the analysis made by EPD (Environmental
Protection Department) among various shelters the quality of Hebe Haven TS, Yim Tin Tsai TS
and Hei Ling Chau TS has the best quality of water i.e they were high doses of DISSOLVED
OXYGEN (6.0-7.2 mg/L) and low E.counts(1-7 cfu/100mL). Various chemicals and heavy metals
were also found in these water e.g chromium, copper, cadmium. The sediments in Victoria
Harbor was polluted by heavy metals due to the waste discharge from the industries. Victoria
Harbor has the poorest quality of water.

DATA COLLECTION
It is that area where planning of various resources and the way with which data is collected
study is done. The information used in the resources were collected from various sources like
magazine and research papers and a very thorough understanding is being done to get the
correct information and do the given project.
During the planning phase various research of components has been made and it includes
studying the amount of dissolved oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen and minerals.
Several authentic sites data from which data is collected is included in REFERENCES section. The
data thus collected is analyzed in several ways which gives a complete understanding of the
water pollution scenarios. The amount of dissolved oxygen and Nitrogen dissolved in the
typhoon shelters is being compared resulting into proper understanding of the case.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS
The monitoring of water quality in typhoon shelter which is done by various water quality
monitoring programme generally collects water from various sources mainly consisting of sea
surface, bottom layer, top layer and middle layer. Based on the collected samples various data
is analyzed and various water quality compliance is checked.
The water quality objectives(WQO) which compares these things.
WATER QUALITY SITUATION
The annual report which is used for the purpose of water quality monitoring done by EPD states
various key features and gives us a thorough understanding. The following guidelines gives the
compliance status of water quality in various typhoon shelters.
DISSOLVED OXYGEN– BOTTOM AND DEPTH AVERAGED
Between 2007 to 2009 the DO(BOTTOM) stated by WQO was not less than 2 mg/L for
90% of the samples.
TOTAL INORGANIC NITROGEN(TIN)
In 2007 and 2008, almost all the typhoon shelter INORGANIC NITROGEN LEVEL has
decreased but some of them were consistent. This details can easily be interfered from the
given table 2.

AMMONIA NITROGEN (NH3 -N)
Between 2007 to 2009 the ammonia nitrogen level was full in compliance with the the
WQO from ammonia nitrogen – unionized form.
The NH3-N AVERAGED MEAN LEVEL should not exceed 0.021 mg/L.
