INTRODUCTION
People management refers to motivating people and provide them comfortable
environment of working that helps in promoting productivity. This adds value to the performance
of employees and team bonding in the organisation that facilitates in bringing shape for future
growth (Abildgaard, 2018). The company that is taken in this report is Sainsbury which is UK
based company and deals in retail sector. In this report it is covered the topic of different
contemporary issues that used face by line manager in managing the people and discussing the
HR process that used to evaluate the performance of employees at company. Apart from that
analysing skills and behaviour that required to be an effective people manager is being studied in
this report.
MAIN BODY
Analysing Contemporary issues that occurs in people management
In an organisation there are different situations and issues that is faced by people manager
while managing employees in company. This could involve several situations that is dealing by
manager and try to resolve the issue which is related to certain theory that comes in support to
the related issues. In Sainsbury, there are different issues which is occur in organisation and
resolve by manager. Following issues are as follows in firm-
Changing in diversity- As, workforce in organisation is diverse that work together to
build harmony and strong harmony give best idea and offer costumer satisfaction. This
create an issues when there is large number of workforce and this largely impact the
culture and productivity issue and being serious problem for managers. This need to be
properly manage by line management and need to understand the diversity law and
ensure that company proctorial should be appropriately dealt. In the organisation of
Sainsbury, this is important to clearly understand the function and diversity in big
organisation that is essential for line manager to look into it and properly go through the
requirement of solving the problem of workforce. In this issue the line management can
use the theory of Systems Management theory to solve the problem of increasing in
diversity in company (Alameda-Pineda, Ricci and Sebe, 2019). This theory proposes that
all components of large systems can functions optimally and promote in work
harmoniously.

Retaining top talent- To find and keep the talent is being difficult of large organisation
and small company as it require huge resources and cost to provide them benefits
packages. This means that human resources are meant to look for talent and loyalty
towards company and retain for longer period is being necessary for organisation. For
different issues there different approaches that is followed by line managers to cope up
with this contemporary issue. In the company Sainsbury, there is large number of
workforce that work in this organisation and it is not easy task to monitor the employees
performance and retain them for specific period. For this issue, the supporting theory that
could be use by manager is Scientific management theory, in this theory there are 14
principles given by Fredrick Taylor and in that certain theory is stated such as
Remunerations, Initiative, Esprit de Corps could be in this issue (Garavan, McCarthy and
Carbery, 2017).
Innovation- This refers to the new technology development and innovation model
introduced in organisation that will lead to increase in efficiency in management and
productivity. To meet with competitive advantages in market this developed the need to
train people to carry out this technological advances and promote in coordinating in
programming. This required to provide training and development programmes internally
and externally to prepare them to use that innovation and automation. In the Sainsbury,
this innovation plays important part in boosting the profit and productivity in the
company (Zhang, 2020). In this situations the theory might be used in this is Contingency
theory as this tells that there is no specified technique for managing an organisation. In
this, leader can opt any style to train the employees as per the technology and not suitable
method can be suggested in this issue.
Skills and behaviour required to be effective manager
Manager need to be developed certain skills and behaviour is essential to manage the
employees in organisation and that involve various methods that could be used to determine the
ways to handle diversity of workforce (Sankaran, 2017). In the Company Sainsbury, the need of
specific skills and behaviour is important to handle and monitor the performance of employees.
Following are the skills and behaviours that need to be an effective manager are-
Problem-solving skills- When any task is assigned on managers it concern with daily
basis problems and it required outstanding attention to understand the detail of situation.

To ensure that work can be performed under calm not in pressure is ability that define the
feature of manager and ensure that team is working properly and works smoothly. To be
creative thinking will help in coming up with innovation solutions and minimise the
impact of risk. In Sainsbury, this skills will facilitates the manager to take successful
decision in management and builds the efficiency and coming with the prompt solution
will help in making informed decision (Grealish and et.al., 2019).
Leadership skills- This refers to the guiding and motivating the employees to build the
confidence to work more harder to perform better. This gives the appropriate approaches
to managers about company and maintaining the efficiency in best way. This will help
the organisation to put positive impact on employees to develop the effective
management and make it more productive to ensure the better performance and work
progress of employees (Opdam, 2018). In the Sainsbury, this leadership skills and
qualities help in managing the workforce in every aspect and ensure that they do not feel
any problem while working. This is will enhance the motivation and confidence that
foster quality in work and build that effectiveness in the organisation.
Communication skills- In the jobs of people this skills is most important in terms to deal
with employee in proper professional manner. This increase the relationship internally
and make it more worth it when manager include several social activities or team
building training with employees. This skill is becoming more necessary nowadays as it
this behaviours will help in establishing the effective relationship with employee and
build respect of manager in eyes of employees (Nguyen and et.al., 2020). In the context
of company Sainsbury, this skills will help in developing of better environment in
organisation and ensure in building relationship with employees. This is core practice
nowadays to improve the connection with them so that they can freely communicate with
manager and solve their internal and external problems with line management.
Discussing the HR process that used to evaluate performance of employees
Through different ways an manager opt certain methods and techniques in management
to evaluate the performance of employees in order to develop the proficiency in them. In order to
achieve the desired objectives and profit in organisation to promote the skills improvement
programmes (Jyoti, 2019). This is necessary to maintain the effectiveness and gives greater
output to employees and gives better performance to maintaining the proper output in

organisation. This need to ensure that all the process and functions of company is achieved
properly and with that evaluation of employees need to be managed in proper manner. In the
Sainsbury company, manager need to use some method to measure the performance of
employees in order to assure that everything is going according to the plan and process
(Greenshields, 2019). Some of the methods are as follows-
Performance management review- This is important to discuss the overview of result and
essential to maintaining the high- quality work in management. In this process it identify
the strength and weaknesses that offer some feedback that required and the set the goal.
Many different approaches are to be made to review the feedback of their performance
and conduct many ways to promote the efficiency of several employees. This need to be
consider to develop the performance appraisal or performance evaluation to review whole
workforce. In the context of company, Sainsbury this process is very effective to know
about the strength and weakness of individual employees and making notes of themselves
and review it on their own. This proof as effective way to measure the activities and
functions through self-evaluation practice by employees of company (James, 2020).
360 degree appraisal- This was initially used in 1940s and it is also known as multilateral
feedback that involve multiple feedback from employee's subordinate, colleagues and
supervisor. This could also done self-evaluation by personnel itself and make relevant
feedback through many sources and develop the sense of feeling of correction and will
try to rectify it to gain proficiency in process. For organisation, this has commonly
utilized 360 degree feedback for development process and assist the employees to
develop their skills and behaviours and promote in performance evaluation and several
decision. To increase the efficiency the need to use this method is being important to
fulfil the demand of performance evaluation in company and brings fairly evaluated
feedback from different people of department about employees and maintaining the
several issues in organisation. In the company, Sainsbury the need of this method in
company is essential to develop as it helps in foster the performance and evaluation
process by providing fairly and legal decision to management to decide the effective
performance of their employees (Guanci and Bjork, 2019).

RECOMMENDATIONS
From the above determination it is saying that to operate any business require to manage
people in business. It helps to conduct different types of activities in effective way and develop
good relation with the staff members. The administration department of Sainsbury, follow
various types of theory and policies in order to identified issues that face by the line manager and
analysis skills and behaviour require for the effective people manager. Thus, it will help to
enhance sales as well as productivity of the business in appropriate manner. For the management
of people essential to manage all functions and provide training after the changes of system and
software.
As per the report it is suggested that organisation require to select effective people
management theory to present different contemporary issues that require to handle by the line
manager effectively. For the issue of changing in diversity select the systematic management
theory to manage all the activities in proper manner and dividend work into group to reduce
diversity among the staff members. For the issue of retaining to talent apply the scientific Taylor
theory where focus on different functions that occur in the business.
The effective skills that select by the manager that is leadership skills in which consist of
all the characteristics and activities. Along with it helps in tough decision making procedure and
complete task on time. For the analysis performance of employees selects 360 degree appraisal
system in order to support management efficiency.
CONCLUSION
As per the above report it has been concluded that people management means arranging
people in business entity as per the skills, behaviour and requirement. Along with provide them
proper training for their work that helps to understand of their work and help to business to
achieve their objectives in particular period of time. It is essential to enhance the quality of
business and develop effective atmosphere. Moreover, it is required skills as well as behaviour
require for effective manager to handle the condition for the analysis a particular HR procedure
to increase performance of overall entity.
