Title

and retention in the context of retailing sector of UK. A study on Sainsbury.
Background
Context of research:
Training and development involves the educational activities in the company which are
developed and implemented for enhancing the knowledge and skills of the employees while
providing the information and also the instructions regarding the ways for performing specific
tasks. The main aim of this practice of HRM is improving the current or future performance of
employees by increasing the ability of the employees for performing through learning. This is
done through changing the attitude of the employees or increasing their skills and knowledge. In
the retail firms of UK like Sainsbury, training and development plays a very important role
because this can help in increasing the performance of the employees which further helps in
gaining the competitive advantage among the competitor firms (Parker and et.al., 2017). The
employees are considered as the biggest assets of the companies as they are the ones who
represent the companies. Customer service is the most significant job in the retailer firms
because at this time the employees interact with the customers. In order to interact with the
customers efficiently the employees need confidence and this is possible only when the
employees have complete knowledge of the products and services of the company. Sometimes
because of less knowledge and communication the employees are not able to provide satisfactory
service to the customers (Bell, Winchester and Wray-Bliss, 2020). The owners of the retail firms
of the company cannot afford to lose the customers because of the poor employee training and
the overall performance of the company depends on the overall performance of the employees
which is why training is essential to improve the performance of the company. Sainsbury is the
second largest chain of supermarkets in UK which deals in retailing products and services. It is
the major competitor of Tesco and also strives hard to lead the company (Gooptu, 2018).
Research is necessary and justification:
Training and development not only helps in improving the performance but also provides
employees motivation and positive change in attitude. Training can help the employees in
understanding the ways in which work fits into the structure, mission, achievements and goals of
