1EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE: REFLECTIVE JOURNAL
Emotional Intelligence (EI) is considered to be a gateway to live a more happy and
fulfilled life. According to scholars, EI helps in allowing individuals to understand and
supervise emotions to self-motivate and also to create fruitful social interactions (Altındağ &
Kösedağı, 2015).
I found taking the Emotional Intelligence self-assessment test very interesting as I was
curious to know how much I score in the test and identify what are my strengths and my
weaknesses. It was a totally new experience as I did not know that answering few questions
could rate my Emotional Intelligence.
A model of Emotional Intelligece introduced by John D. Mayer and Peter Salovey
proposed the fact that Emotional Intelligence is a cognitive ability to monitor feelings of
one’s own as well as others in order to discriminate among themselves and also use the
information to guide the action and thinking of one’s own which I was not aware of before as
I thought that emotions come naturally (Mayer, Caruso & Salovey, 1999). However, taking
this test helped me discover my EI level and made me understand how I can develop myself
to improve my EI which I can use in both my professional as well as personal development.
In the test I scored the highest in social awareness which I believe is true as I always
active interest in understanding the concerns of others and understanding the point of view of
other people. After that I scored the most in relationship management which I agree with
because I believe that I am good with maintaining positive relationships with people and also
help them when they are in any kind of difficulty. For example, I help in motivating and
guiding my friends who sometimes lose their confidence and morale due to any negative
incident which helps in building and maintaining positive relationship.
However, I scored moderately in two domains which is self-awareness and self-
management. I agree to self-awareness as I feel that I do understand my own emotions

however, I sometimes fail to understand my emotions during extreme situations as I get
confused of the mixed emotions some situations cause. I am also aware of self-worth which
makes me take participation in challenging competition, have high aspirations for myself and
also take risks when it comes to making decisions for myself.
I have also scored moderately in self-management which I disagree as I feel that I
have the ability to manage my disruptive impulses and emotions. I usually set goals for
myself and work ardently towards achieving those goals in order to improve my skills; I also
monitor my own behavior and make sure that I behave appropriately all the time. I usually
identify my weaknesses and take feedback positively and then try to work hard to improve
my weakness and evaluate my progress so that I grow and develop myself so that my skills
and my EI level can contribute to my overall development.
Taking this test has helped me to understand my strengths and the shortcomings
which I have and thus I will start working on understanding my emotions in adverse
conditions and also try to improve the skills that I have based on the test results.
