The Quran, the meaning of which is the word “the recitation”, is known to be one of
the important religious texts in the world. The Quran is popularly known as the central
religious texts for the Muslims. The Quran teaches the individuals about the subject matter of
the teachings of Muhammad and that of God itself. Hence, it is considered to be one of the
finest works that one can find in the Arabian literature. The Quran can be said to be divided
into chapters, all of which talks about Mohammad and the philosophies which he had
imparted to the people during his time. Hence, the Muslims are known to abide by the
teachings and the philosophies of Quran itself.
The purpose of this essay is to discuss about the Quran, which is the religious
text of the Muslims all over the world itself.
In order to understand what the Quran teaches to the followers about the concept of
religion and other matters, it is necessary for the readers to understand the what the subject
matter of the religious text is. It is said by the historians and the religious scholars that the
writings of Quran is said to be what God had revealed to the prophet Muhammad through the
archangel Gabriel, known in the Islamic text as Jibril (Haron, 2014). This revelation of God is
said to have continued over a period of twenty-three years which started from the time when
Muhammad was 40 to the time before in death in the year 632 C.E. The religious text is
considered to be the most important of all the miracles done by Muhammad, which proves his
prophethood. The religious text is also said to be an account of the series of the divine
messages which was preached by God to Muhammad, starting from the times of Adam to the
present time which ended with the prophet Muhammad (Al, 2014).
It is said by the religious scholars as well as the historians that the Quran was written
by the followers of Muhammad after his death, who had written down the versions of the
Quran as they had remembered it to be. However, the teachings and the philosophies of the

Quran major differences in the script which made it possible for the Caliph Uthman to
establish the Uthman’s codex which is considered to be the standard version of The Quran
written for the convenience of the people themselves. But it can be said that different versions
of The Quran also exist with minor differences in the teachings (Al, 2015).
The Quran is considered to be similar in a lot of ways to the scriptures found in The
Bible itself. It is said that just like The Bible itself, The Quran aims for the assumption of the
familiarity of the major narratives which an individual might find to be contained in The
Bible itself. It is said by the religious scholars that the aim of The Quran is to summarize,
interpret and in some cases to present an alternative solution to the events which takes place
in The Quran (Haron, 2014). Sometimes, the hadith are used in The Quran, which is
considered to be the additional supplementary writings in addition to the Quran. It has been
found that in the case of the sharia law, the Quran is used as a source in the approach called
Quranism, which consists of a small number of denominations itself. The Quran is recited by
the Muslims in the Arabic language in the times of the prayers.
The origins of The Quran is said to date back to the Prophetic times in history. It is
being said by the experts themselves that the Quran started with Prophet Muhammad
receiving his first revelations in the Cave of Hira during the time when he had once retreated
to the mountains. It was there that he had been told the rules and the teachings of The Quran
by God himself through the archangel Gabriel. It was from The Quran itself that the religion
of Islam was born and gained many followers in the world itself (Haron, 2014).
It is known to the readers of the essay that The Quran is held in high esteem by the
Muslims themselves (Ali, 2015). This is because of the fact that they consider the Quran to be
the statements which were made by Allah through the angel Gabriel over the period of 23
years itself. The revelations which are found by the individuals are said to be the things

which were said to be God to an individual for imparting to the others. The Muslims
therefore consider the texts of Islam to be important because the present wording of The
Quran is considered to a guide for the Muslim people and view it as a sign of the
prophethood.
The Quran teaches the people the main laws and the teachings of the religion of Islam
all of which are contained in the book of The Quran itself. The Quran itself states that Islam
is the complete and universal version of a type of primordial faith which was revealed to the
people through various prophets like that of Adam, Abraham, Moses and Jesus (Ali, 2015).
The religious text teaches the followers of the religion about the five pillars which the
religion of Islam preaches. The first of these five pillars are considered to be Shahada
(profession of faith), which states that the Muhammad is the only messenger of God. An
individual can only become a Muslim by stating the following quotes (Haron, 2014). The
second pillar which Islam teaches and is contained within The Quran is the Salat (prayer).
This states that a Muslim has to pray five times a day facing towards the direction of Mecca.
The third pillar of the Islam which Quran teaches to the followers is the Zakat (alms) which is
the amount that the Muslims need to provide to the community members who are in need of
help (Al, 2014). The fourth pillar of Islam taught by The Quran is Sawm (fasting), which
states that during the month of Ramadan which is the ninth month of the Muslim, the healthy
Muslims are to abstain themselves from having food or drinking water. The fifth and the final
pillar as mentioned in The Quran is the Hajj. This means that it is necessary for the Muslims
who are healthy and financially should at least make a pilgrimage to Mecca and Medina in
the country of Saudi Arabia. All these teachings are fond by the followers of the Islam
religion in the religious text The Quran (Ali, 2015).
Apart from the teachings of the five pillars of Islam, The Quran also states to the
followers about the moral code of conduct which the members of the religion should follow

for themselves. The Quran emphasizes on such qualities like that of truthfulness, honesty,
sincerity, unselfishness, humility, patience and forgiveness. All of these are qualities which
an individual who considered himself to be an ideal Muslim must have within himself in
order to reach the kingdom of God. The Quran also teaches that a Muslim individual should
always put the very best behaviour towards the other Muslims that he meets. This is the only
way in which an individua; can gain entry into the kingdom of Allah (Haron, 2014).
From the above discussions, it can be concluded that the Quran is indeed one of the
most popular religious text which an individual can find. It is through the use of The Quran
that an individual can get to know about the religion of as well as the teachings which Islam
imparts to its followers. All the information which can be found in The Quran indeed makes
it one of the most reliable religious texts in the world.
