Introduction
The aim is to discuss Mills’ sociological imagination by applying it to my own life. The
aspect that I want to explore is my personal identity using the sociological imagination as
explained by C. Wright Mills. According to Mills, the sociological imagination empowers the
holder to understand the broader historical scenario in terms of the meaning related to the
individual life and outside career of various individuals(Mills 1959). I shall explore this aspect of
my identity in the paper.
Discussion
Mills states in the book titled The Sociological Imagination that the sociological
imagination facilitates the individual to take into account the way other individuals often become
conscious in a false way regarding their social positions in the confusion of their daily
lives(Mills 1959). I used to believe that we humans form our own personal identity detached
from the society and its beings. I believed that one’s personal identity is free of any influence
from others in the society. However, after understanding the sociological imagination, I realized
that every person’s individual identity is just a reflection of the society, of the external life. As
Mills rightly said, the personal troubles or uncomforting situations faced by the individuals are
focused on overt problems and the unresponsiveness to the public changes into involvement with
the same(Mills 1959). In a struggle to find my own identity and to know who I really am, I
discovered that we humans are constantly stuck in the daily struggles of life to actually look into
our own selves. The sociological imagination explains that in order to understand ourselves as
individuals, we have to locate ourselves within the period and by knowing our own opportunities
life by being aware of the other individuals and what they might be going through if they were in

our circumstance or vice versa(Mills 1959). In simple terms, I have come to understand that my
personal identity could not be expressed away from the society. To express my personal identity,
I must put myself in others’ shoes and attempt to comprehend the circumstances that person is
going through and in what way my identity is related.
Mills also talks about the power of our sociological imagination to grab history and
biography and the way these two intersect within the society. He states that the grasping of both
history and biography by the sociological imagination is both “its task and its promise”. I have
understood my personal identity through the meaning of history and biography and the way these
two are related. As Mills states, “we have come to know that every individual lives in some
society, that he lives out a biography and that he lives it with some historical significance”(Mills
1959). In simple words, Mills tried to explain that an individual, through his own existence and
identity, creates his own biography while also becoming a part of the history whether he realizes
it or not.
It is further interesting to note that the most fulfilling difference possessing which our
sociological imagination works is amongst the individual troubles of environment and the public
issues of social construction. This difference between the two is a vital tool of the sociological
imagination that we possess as individuals and a trait of all the classical work comprising social
science. While identifying my personal self, I found that I had troubles understanding why I
could not distinguish myself from my surrounding. Mills provided a clear explanation to it. He
stated that troubles take place within the individual’s character and inside the vicinity of his
instant associations with others. The individual must do with his own and with the others
restricted areas of the social life where he is personally and directly aware. Thus, the assertion
and identification and resolution of the troubles lie adequately in the individual being a

biographical entity and in the sphere of his instantaneous social setting, which is open directly to
the experiences that are personal to him.
Conclusion
Therefore, I could say that I have been able to understand my personal identity with the
help of Mills’ sociological imagination. As stated, the sociological imagination refers to the
concept of understanding oneself by perceiving the society from other’s perspective. My
personal identity is formed through the understanding of the circumstances of others. Mills also
described biography and history as being related to each other within the society and meaning
the self and the society in which the individual lives.
