USP 2014: Executive Summary
Climate change has become a serious issue, towards which the organisations within the
industry are required to be focused and to take initiatives to mitigate the negative impact of
climate change. Unilever has developed a sustainable development plan to meet the changing
requirements within the industry and towards the development of the society, also to provide
a sustainable living place to the people. The report is effectively focused on analysing the
sustainable plan developed by the organisation and identifying its impact within the society.
Unilever’s plan effectively focuses upon mitigating the impact of climate change on society
and promotes the growth and development of the society.
Unilever has the vision to develop a sustainable living. Climate change has changed the
way business activities were conducted, as with the changes within the environment, the
societies are focusing on brands that are more involved in creating a better environment for
the future. Unilever operates with a focus on improving its organisational performance along
with reducing the negative impact of environmental changes within the society (Unilever,
2020). Unilever is effectively contributing the maximum as compared to the other brands
within the industry (Federman, 2016).

The sustainable plan by Unilever has contributed towards the following developments.

Unilever’s sustainable living plan is focused on improving the health of more than 1
billion, by 2020, reducing the environmental impact by half, and improving the living
conditions for millions.
Unilever has linked its development plan with its brands, such as Dove’s Self-esteem
project, which is focused on empowering the women and girl child, Kissan, the
ketchup brand of Unilever focuses on the utilisation of the tomatoes produced by the
local suppliers so that the farmers can get the real cost for their product.
Also, Unilever focuses on the utilisation of renewable sources of energy within its
manufacturing units, and the organisation focuses on the combined goal of zero waste
creation. Through the initiatives taken within the organisation, Unilever has
contributed towards utilising 28% of energy from renewable sources within the
organisation and eliminated a high-volume of non-hazardous waste creation.
Unilever sustainable development plan has resulted in proving health and hygiene to
more than 397 million people by 2014, and around 8,00,000 farmers have gained
training and support to effectively engage in the production activities.
Unilever sustainable plan is focused on enhancing the livelihoods of millions of
people by 2020, and the utilisation of the renewable sources of energy within the
manufacturing process, as the organisation realises that such efforts will contribute
towards the positive changes within the society (Unilever, 2014).
Unilever’s effort towards developing a sustainable living is an effective step towards
eliminating the negative impact of the climatic changes. As through such policies, Unilever is
effectively contributing towards changing environment and is continuously implementing
new policies so that the organisation’s image as a sustainable organisation can be established
within the society.
