Introduction
The lives of the individual members living in the world are considered to be the single
most factor which imparts uniqueness to Earth within the entire universe. The human civilization
came in to being in order to understand how the best measures can be undertaken in order to
create a sustainable community which would be able to further the living standard of such people
(Yapa, 2017). The mere survival of the individuals is not the primary objective of the world.
Rather, the individuals are required to live a life of peace, harmony, have access to the basic
amenities of life and also be able to promote the lives of those who are in need (Rudra & Tobin,
2017). In this context, the United Nations Organization was established in the year 1945 in order
to bring about a change in the well-being notion of the individuals. The purpose of this paper is
to understand how the organization of the United Nations Population Fund function for the
achievement of the objective of improving the lives of the people.
Background of the topic
The United Nations Population Fund began operating in the year 1969 as an agency of
the United Nations itself. It has the primary objective of creating a world where life is desirable
and the birth of a child is safe. The fulfillment of the potential of every youth is the need of the
hour. In this respect, the United Nations Population Fund came to occupy a significant place
within the society of today since the issue of poverty is placing a challenge to the well-being
notion of the society.

The main aim of this paper is to understand the functioning of the United Nations
Population Fund in the back drop of globalization and the rising poverty in the world and how it
has created to the generation of a bugger gap between the rich class and the poor people.
Counter arguments
Many scholars are of the opinion that the globalized and the ideology of liberalization has
worked for the welfare of the people. It has been able to create a situation of competition where
the individuals of the society are motivated to constantly evolve themselves (Subedi et al., 2018).
The private players have the freedom to manufacture those commodities and services which are
profitable in nature, thereby, increasing their scope to earn a higher level of profit margin. This
profit which is earned, is percolated to the lower levels of the employees who work within such
organizations (Alper & Oktayer, 2019). Their lives, in turn, are improved as their purchasing
power increases, allowing them to purchases those goods and services which were so long not
affordable to them.
Thus, the scholars who support the issue of globalization has looked at the issue of
competition and how it has led to the increase in the production process within the society
(Uzonwanne, 2018). They have laid emphasis on the opening up of the borders of the world as a
result of which migration has taken place. Migration allows people to move from their native
place to a foreign country, in search of better living standard and employment opportunities
(Bergh, Mirkina & Nilsson, 2016). Thus, the scholars who advocate the aspect of globalization
base their arguments on the advantages of spread of technology, competition and the rise in
migration.

Refutation of counter arguments
However, there are many scholars who have challenges such a perceived notion of
advantage of globalization. They are of the idea that the factor of competition helps only those
individuals who already have certain wealth with them and the authoritative power to utilize
them in an effective manner (Logan, 2017). Thus, the issue of globalization has only supported
the growth and the development of the rich class itself. In contrast to this, the situation of the
poor individuals has degraded to a significant level. Earlier, they did not have the financial
resources to sustain themselves. However, they had the advantage of self-sustenance since it was
allowed by their governments. However, in the face of globalization, with the reduced scope of
activity of the governmental bodies, the plight of the poor individuals has worsened (Yapa,
2017).
Thus, the scholars who are against the issue of globalization has harped on the living
standard of the individuals of the community and the spread of poverty. Many people of the
world cannot afford the basic means of subsistence and as a result their quality of life is
degrading by the day.
My arguments
The arguments provided by the scholars with regard to the importance of globalization is
true to some extent. The liberalized world has given the opportunity to the private players to
increase their means of production and manufacturing sector. As a direct consequence of this, the
world has seen a higher level of economic growth in the twenty first century (Rudra & Tobin,
2017). A lot of technological advancement has also been brought about, all of which contributes
to the improvement of the living standard of the people. For instance, the technological

advancement in the field of medicine has led to the rise in the longevity of the individuals of the
society.
However, as it can be seen the issue of poverty has gained a strong foot hold within the
globalized world of today. The private players have commercialized the basic means of
subsistence which means that now the consumer products are available at competitive prices.
Thus, only those individuals with the requisite financial resources can purchase them
(Shrivastava & Shrivastava, 2019). Thus, the poor people, who do not have this requisite money,
are unable to purchase such essential commodities, leading to a degeneration of their health and
living standard.
The United Nations Population Fund is of the opinion that there is a need to improve the
lives of the people in the face of such globalization and liberation. The economic growth of the
world cannot be changed for the improvement in the lives of the people. Thus, several
sustainable development goals were formulated by the United Nations, dealing with the pressing
issues of the society which adversely affects the lives of the people (Shrivastava & Shrivastava,
2019). One such Goal recognized the need to reduce poverty. For this, the concerted efforts of
the governmental bodies are needed so that each government of a country can take an affirmative
role for improving the living standard of its own people, especially the youth.
Conclusion
In conclusion, it can be observed that the main objective of this paper was to understand
the functioning of the United Nations Population Fund in the back drop of globalization and the
rising poverty in the world and how it has created to the generation of a bugger gap between the
rich class and the poor people. In this regard, it has looked in to the arguments provided for the

aspect of globalization and the arguments provided against the issue of globalization. The United
Nations Population Fund has been able to address these issues and recognized the need for the
adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals in order to mitigate the threat of poverty. In this
regard, a possible plan of action which can be taken is that the United Nations Population Fund
should set up an office in the most under developed parts of the world and try to address the
issue of poverty at the grass root level. It is only when real action is taken at the field that
effective changes can be brought about.
