Introduction
This essay outlines the importance of pursuing a degree at a university and what exactly
encourages the students these days in opting a particular degree format. Nowadays, attending and
taking admissions in the University is a boom, which encourages the youth to pursue a degree,
but it is not an easy task. The students do intend at developing certain kind of skills as well while
pursuing a degree at a University, which will be highlighted below in order to understand the
same.
Pursuing degree at university
There is a point in life after finishing the high school life, where the students think to go the the
Univeristy for higher education. The university time and life are pretty much unknown to the
students. Some of them are very keen on joining the University and some of them have no clue
what it is going to be like. Various students have proper insights about the college life due to
their relatives and friends already studying at universities provide them how it is going to be
there. A university life can be better for the students who prepare themselved personally and
academically for pursuing a degree at a particular University. It is also at times difficult to decide
as to which university a student should apply. Numerous level of confusion and doubts arise in
the minds of the students before deciding a particular degree and university to pursue in future.
The life in high school and at a university is entirely different. There are certain reasons to which
a particular student thinks of pursuing a degree at university. The foremost reason is to attain a
higher level of academic qualification, which will help the student in the future growth. The
other reasons are for like the future career, maintaining a social life as well. Pursuing a degree at

a university is highly important as it helps a student in building not just personally, but provides
them with some social standings, career opportunities and gives them lifetime earnings, which
will turn out to be fruitful in the future for them(Chan, 2016).
For reason like academic interest, the students seek to obtain in-depth knowledge about a
particular subject of their interest, which builds their academic as well as the knowledge base.
The universities provide the students with a number of specialized courses, which encourages
them to pursue the higher education in the field of their choice. Further, like some of the students
aim at going to the university for leading a better career life in the future only because various
multinational corporations these days recruit the candidates who have a higher degree and good
academic qualifications, which is the reason why there is a higher percentage now of students
opting for pursuing a degree at the university. Also, another reason is likely to be for living and
developing a social life, where a particular university is such a place, where a student can meet a
bunch of people coming from different backgrounds that increase the level of social belonging in
their lives and social groups too. Universities provide the students with friends and people with
whom they can develop strong relations and can spend a lot of time with them. Thereby, there
are several reasons for a student to join and pursue a degree at a university, which changes from
person-to-person(Iksan & Zakaria, 2012).
Skills developed at University
Nonetheless, the expectations and the reality at Univeristy is a lot different for the students.
Students face various differences such as an increase in the workloads, increase in the number of

classes to be attended, difficulty in scoring good grades at the universities, inadequate
preparation time and various other factors makes it difficult for the students to adjust easily. But
at the same time, Universities help the students with various skills and develop them personally
and professionally. The major skill that can be developed at the university is the communication
skill through actively participating in the co-curricular activities and giving presentations. The
communication skill is important because organizations seek to recruit the candidates who have
high communication skills to communicate with customers and clients. Another skill is writing
skill that should be developed at the universities by taking participate in content writing and it is
important because various sectors across the business world work on the basis of emails and
manual writings(Langworthy, 2007). Time management skill is also developed at the
universities, where the student gets to learn on how to manage the time while preparing for
exams, delivering assignments and other activities, which turns out to be very beneficial in the
future as one has to be highly managed and should be capable of working and completing their
activities effectively and efficiently. Also, universities can help in developing entrepreneurial
skills, which helps the students in the future while showcasing their business skills and even at
opening their own business. The skills like listening skills, management skills and reading skills
can also be developed while pursuing a degree at the universities(Bhardwa, 2017).
Goals for developing skills at University
Skills can not just be developed, they need to be acquired by achieving certain short and long
term goals. The short term goals for developing the skills can be like participating in the debates,
undertaking certain activities relating to journalism, disseminating topics and giving full

commitment to the academic study can help in achieving the goals. Whereas, the long term goals
can be like making connections, profound the ability of listening, learning about various business
ideologies, learning about a society/culture, applying in activities like internships, which all will
help the student in developing skills that will provide benefits that help in achieving the goals of
life. Constantly learning and grabbing the opportunities that best help in learning new things and
acquiring new skills will help the students in developing their skills(Kandiko, 2017). All this is
very important as a trajectory of students opting for higher education helps in forming their
perspectives and gives shape to their future goals and life. Students while pursuing a degree at
the university learn a lot and are able to personally develop themselves in a varied manner that
enhances their overall personality and employability, which gives positive results and success to
them. Also, it is not just students who should set certain goals at developing the skills, the
universities should also provide good and specialized courses, better environment, a good
faculty, special opportunities that encourage the students to learn and exhibit more while
studying at the university. Higher education at the university is a good step towards achieving
success, where the part has to be played by both, the student as well as the university(Gogaku,
2018).
Conclusion
From the essay above, it can be stated that it is very crucial and essential to opt for pursuing a
degree at a university and these days, every student must emphasize on doing the same as it is
very beneficial for the student. This increases the level of employability for the same and the
students can easily achieve their goals. The skills are particularly enhanced by the people who
aim at completing a degree at a university. Also, the future career and plans happen to become
certain when the students decide to pursue for a degree.
