AI Summary
This assignment focuses on updating and developing the integration of buildability and constructability within a construction context, specifically for the BCME402 module. The task involves creating an updated concept of buildability and constructability, along with the development of new tools, including a comprehensive Buildability/Constructability Handbook and a framework of company policies and procedures. The handbook is designed for senior managers and requires a detailed exploration of the historical development of the concepts, an explanation of the updated concept with justifications, and the mapping of new principles against different project lifecycle stages. The assignment emphasizes the roles of cost and project managers, the influence of constructability on cost and change, and the benefits of the updated handbook for the company. The handbook should include a synopsis, address aims and objectives, and provide detailed guidance on implementing buildability and constructability principles across all project stages, integrating knowledge, managing teams, and establishing clear objectives and goals. It aims to improve construction project outcomes and is a valuable resource for students seeking to understand and apply these concepts.

1) Understand the
concept of buildability
and constructability, and
its application to a
defined scope in the
building project
In my attempt to understand the concepts of constructability and
buildability, I first looked into its definition, in order to be well
conversant with the idea. I then proceeded to the historical
background of the concept where I learnt of the various principles,
as constituted by several bodies such as BPRC, CIIA and CARI
including the existing variations. This offered me a great
opportunity in terms of expanding and redefining the various
principles to assist the company through the handbook.
This can be seen through the
handbook in pages 5-7.

2) Understand the
principles of
constructability
applied to the
different life cycle
stages of a building
project
In my journey towards comprehending the application of
constructability principles in the product life cycle, I began by
looking into the concepts to the influence of cost and change,
where through the product life cycle, I understood that each stage
is significant, and thus the principles should be applied effectively.
This knowledge significantly assisted me in reproducing the
handbook as seen in my proposed section, where every proposal
was investigated through the project life cycle.
This can be seen through the
handbook in pages 8, and 12-
18.

3) Understand the
roles and
responsibilities of
professional
construction and cost
Cost mangers as well as the project mangers play a crucial role in
the constructability performance of a building. I managed to grasp
their stipulated roles, and realised that right from the planning
stage, financial assessments as well as validation of projects,
these mangers play a key role. This knowledge assisted in drafting

professionals, and it is my belief that they find it of great use. Areas
that have not been covered can be always be proposed so the
handbook be reviewed appropriately.
