1THE U.S. COLONIZATION OF THE PHILIPPINES
The U.S. colonization of The Philippines was one of the major events to happen in
both American history as well as the history of the world. The Americans had colonized The
Philippines which they got as a result of signing The Treaty of Paris in February 1899 which
granted them direct rule of The Philippine islands.
The purpose of this essay is to analyse the U.S. colonization of The Philippines.
The U.S. colonization of The Philippines is an important part in the American history
because it allowed the United States to gain an Asian territory that could be of military and
social importance to the Americans. Although the Filipinos were against the colonization by
the Americans, it proved to be of some use to them because it brought the Filipinos economic
value and the social welfare to the people of the country.
As stated by Hsu (2013) although President McKinley had announced the acquisition
of Philippines within the part of his Benevolent Assimilation Proclamation of 1899, it still
involved Americans forcing their sovereignty into the country by means of force which led to
the Filipino American War. After the defeat of the Filipinos in 1901, their leader Aguinaldo
swore his allegiance to the U.S. thereby bringing the war to an end. Later, President
Roosevelt ended the Philippine Insurrection in 1902 (Dineen-Wemberly, 2014).
Thus, it can be concluded that the colonization of The Philippines was one of the most
important events in the history of both American as well as the world history. It granted the
Americans a social and military area of importance in Asia and had also established its
position as a superpower in the world.
