AI Summary
This report compares the performance of Variable Bit Rate (VBR) and Constant Bit Rate (CBR) encoding methods for streaming applications. It highlights the advantages of VBR in delivering high-quality media while discussing the efficiency of CBR in terms of speed and storage. The analysis includes references to relevant literature and emphasizes the suitability of VBR for complex audio files and portable devices.

Comparing performance of VBR variants with CBR for streaming applications
Variable bit rate (VBR) takes long time in encoding data while streaming but it provides
a high quality of media. It is mostly used in delivering video content which is progressive
(HTTP). The bitrate of media in VBR increases and decreases depending on need of bitrate in
file. The range can vary from 65 to 320 kbps.
On the other hand, constant bit rate (CBR) encodes file not for quality but save it for
storage purpose. This technique is mostly used for streaming video in flash media server. It has
having a fixed value like 128, 256 and 320 kbps (Dahule, Indurkar and Kamble, 2015). Thus,
speed remains constant while streaming. The advantage of using it is audio file processes faster
as compared to VBR.
By comparing both, it can be analyzed that VBR is more effective in streaming videos as
it provides a high quality file. VBR produces more number of bitrates while encoding. It can also
be used in hardware devices like MP3 players, PMP.s etc. Besides this, VBR maintains balance
between quality and file size. Thus, in portable devices that have limited storage like USB, it can
be effectively used. Apart from this, VBR can be used in encoding complex audio files.
Moreover, the streamlining process takes place smoothly in VBR. Due to this, its performance is
effective for streaming. On the contrary, CBR only supports audio formats in old hardware
devices.
