1CASE STUDY ANALYSIS
This paper seeks to understand a case study pertaining to the observation of the
personalities and character development of two important individuals. In this regard, the personal
relationship between them has been judged based on the values and beliefs of the society. The
various specific skills for communication which aids in the development of empathy has also
been considered in the course of the essay. In this context, the effectiveness of verbal
communication has also been looked in to.
The understanding of the emotional perspective of the different people of the community
is essential for the individuals. In this process it can be observed that there is a significant need
for empathy from the people. Empathy signifies that an individual is able to comprehensively
understand the pain and the troubles that are faced by the other people of the society. Even if the
concerned individuals are unable to sympathize with such pain or character development of the
people, they need to at least understand the reasons for the development of such personalities. In
this regard, the personality of Vicki needs to be understood where she has been shown as a timid
and compromising sort of a person.
The character of Vicki in the case study has been shown as to be a dependent person who
tried to adjust with everything. She fell in love with an abusive character called Mark who tried
to insult her and reprimand her at every opportunity. It was his charming personality in the initial
stages which attracted her to him in the first place, but soon it was revealed that he was
domineering in character. She tried to adjust with the situation because of the fear that she would
be judged by her own parents and the other people of the society. It was this fear which did not
allow her to leave him even when he started to physically hurt her.
In this regard, it needs to be noted that one of the important values of the society is to
respect the other individuals of the community and not judge them for any external factors such

as the kind of clothes they wear. In this regard, the respect provided to the women of the society
is of utmost importance as they are often belittled by the male members of the society. For
instance, in the case study, Mark often belittled and reprimanded Vicki for all of her actions,
even during the times she was quiet. He showed his aggressive nature and failed to understand
that Vicki might be simply putting up with him because of her compromising nature.
A bias that can be observed to be present with regard to Vicki is that she took the views
and the opinions of the people to be far more important than her own safety and happiness. She
failed to leave Mark because of her idea that the other people of the society would judge her and
condemn her. It was out of this fear that she could not leave Mark, thereby failing to stand up for
herself. This shows the typical nature of the women folks who often compromise their happiness
for maintaining the ego of their male counterpart.
Certain communication skills may be followed in order to undertake an empathetic view
of the individuals of the society. The utilization of such communication styles would enable the
people to get a comprehensive and in-depth understanding of emotions of the people which
highly influences the behavior of such individuals. In the case of Vicki, her attempts to justify
the actions and behavior of Mark can be seen to be playing a significant role in developing an
empathetic understanding of her non-verbal form of communication. During this time, the
readers does develop empathy towards Vicki but they are unable to provide any sympathies as
they could not justify the actions of Mark or the compromise made by Vicki.
The verbal communication that was made by Vicki was with regard to the police man.
She finally drew the courage to tell them that she was being abused by Mark. Although she took
some time to speak up against Mark and even though Mark threatened her not to talk to the
police, she took matters in her own hands and told the police about her abusive state of affairs.

readers to further empathize with her current situation.
This, it can be concluded that effective forms of communication are a necessity. The
behavior of a person depends largely on the surrounding environmental factors and the other
issues which have influenced them during their process of growth and development. In this
context, it can be analyzed that the personality of an individual has the ability to affect the other
people of the society.
