the skills and competencies. So this is my duty to support to the HR manager to select a best
candidate for the store manager post. The Virgin Media Group is having a particular selection
process which is having four rounds to refine candidates and select the best person as an
employee. Here is the process;
HR round- Candidates which are shortlisted for the interviews have to pass this round where the
HR manager provides them quick brief about the job and salaries etc. and as well as they analyse
the demands of the candidates. HR manager has to check documents of the candidates to check
that the person is eligible or not for the job of store manager. After this HR manager convey their
collected informations to marketing manager to set relevant questions for the interview.
Interview with the manager- This is the second round where a line manager takes an
interview to know about the candidate's depth and views regrading to this job(Vandervert, 2015).
In this the interviewer asked questions which are related to the qualification, education and
family details to analyse the potentials of the person. The manager reports to the me about the

Final round- This is a final round where candidate have to face marketing managers.
These managers are having huge experience to deal in different conditions. Most of the times,
interviewers puts the situational questions to examined the depth and knowledge of the person.
By this, the manager can get the knowledge of the mental level, decision making and quick

responsibility to select candidate which are having skills which are required for the job role of
the Store Manager (Wan and et.al., 2015). Store managers are controlled by me so I am having
Document Page
huge responsibility to select candidate according to the requirement of organisation. Some
points are here which has potential to define my role in the recruitment and selection process:
ï‚· I have to set standards in ability and skill for the store manager, as I a have the
knowledge of the market and need of the organisation according to the situations, I can
make better skills and ability criteria for the store manager job.

but to make it more effective I have to support them to make more better sales team to

The above given job description and person specification is made by me which is having all
the factors for the job role. The person specification is focusing on the personal abilities which

number of shortlisted candidates.

Focus- Employees have to focus on their performance and qualitative work as well as
leaders have to focus on their targets and they have to make changes and adjustments in the

2.2 Difference between leadership and management
Management- A process to deal with the persons and manage things, this is a part of the
organisation to manage all people and business activities according to the need of the company.
This is a part which is act by the manager in the organisation and Virgin Media Group is having
different department managers which are having different eduction and skills according to their
sector(Slaughter, 2011).
Leadership- An ability to lead a group of peoples or an organisation, board of the directors
are mainly covered in this. They are having all the abilities, potentials and power to make
policies and strategies for the organisation. They are having proper control on the employees and
they are having power to manage them as per the need of the situations.
Management is covered in the leadership and it supports to leaders. These both are
having huge difference, some points are here to define the difference in between the management
and leadership:
Control: Management is controlled by the leaders, managers plays a role of subordinate
of their leaders in the company.
Focus: Leaders are having focus on the targets and objectives so they make plans and
strategies accordingly. On the other side management is having focus on the structure and
system which helps to the company to manages their peoples and business activities according to
the leaders strategies.

strategies.
2.3 Comparison of different leadership styles in different situations

is owned by leaders. Subordinates are not having participation in leadership. This is effective in
Document Page
the conditions when work forces are not interested to deliver their efforts in favour of the
company (Rossouw and Fonagy, 2012). Leaders can use their strict instructions on them to
generate work from them.
Democratic leadership style- Employees and subordinates participate in the decision
making and as well as their leaders are open to take their suggestion to make better working
environment by making better suggestion from them. When employees are highly dedicated to
their organisation and they are loyal to the company to make it more productive. In this situation,
leaders can involve their employees and subordinates to make better policies and strategies.
These both styles are used by the managers and leaders of the Virgin Media Group in
different situations which are given above; a comparison is here in between the both leadership
styles:
Strength- By the autocratic leadership, managers and leaders can make faster and quick
decision and strategies for betterment of the organisation and the other side democratic takes
time to be on the final decision (Parker, Corden and Heaton, 2011).
Participation- Democratic is based on participation of employees and leaders which is
making effective decisions and policies for the organisation; on the other side autocratic is
having no need to participate so it can be done by the manager and leader of the organisation.

having my own team and on the personal level I believe in the democratic leadership style, it has
a great impact on the employees and better results as in strategies and decisions.
2.4 Ways to motivate staff to achieve objectives

Virgin Media Group. By this, they can encourage their potentials and as well as their
competencies to enlarge the business of the company. Maslow's hierarchy needs can be used by
the leaders of the company to motivate their employees by fulfilling their needs. By this, the
managers and leaders can enhance loyalty of their employees which help to their performance
and creativity (Moores, Fish and Duperouzel, 2011). Maslow's hierarchy is here to explain which
can be used by the organisation to increase the potentials of the employees by motivating them:
Physiological Needs- The leader and managers can provide their employees with allthe
facilities which are related to their body like: drinking water, lunch, healthy breath, sleep and

rewards and incentives can play an important role in increasing productivity of the employees.
Managers can set target for each employee which have to be attain by the employee in a
particular time period (Kearley and Croft, 2010). So by this employee can adjust their
performance to achieve them, these are internal motivators.

3.2 Demonstration of working in a team as a leader and a member
Virgin Media Group is having vacancy for the sales executive and I am working as a
store manager so I am having a power to recruit an employee which is a need of the store. We
have adopt a new method to fill the vacancy where applications can be taken thorough the team
members. So I am having two application and I have to select one of team which is very
difficult(Dodd and et. al., 2011). HR managers are having responsibility to develop a proper
recruitment and selection process for the recruitment. In this they have to make proper section
process with all the round to evaluate the potentials of the candidates and analyse their skills. In
this selection process I have provide a selection criteria to our HR managers. These both
applicant are having recommendation of the team members so it is difficult to take one of them.
This selection process is having a potential to rectify the best candidate as per the needs of the
organisation. Wrong selection can make negative impact on the sales and marketing of the
company so it is essential to select the suitable candidate for the organisation which can fulfil the
need of the company. As I am a manager and having power to select a candidate I have to be
loyal for the company.

conflicts and issues regarding to the work adjustments(Lauby-Secretan and et.al., 2015). This
stage takes time to adjust for a new employee in a new working environment. In this team

In all of these stages employees are performing in a very well manner, at the last in they are
making collective efforts to complete the task and to achieve the business objective of the
company.
4.1 Factors involved in planning in monitoring and assessment of work performance
It is essential for the managers and as well as to the company to analyse the needs of the

Some factors are here which are related to the monitoring and assessment of the work
performance;
Time management- As the company has divide their work in the employees, their

period. By this they can analyse the speed and skills of the employee.
