1. Introduction
It is just in the last two or three decades that mobile phones became popular. The
customer base for mobile phones in the United States alone rose from 24 million to 182 million
during this period (Worldatlas.com 2020). The findings of this discussion will be used to
recommend a few points of suggestion to Vivo. The aim of this report will be attained by
discussing separately about the strengths and weaknesses of Vivo.
2. Company Report (Vivo)
This section will discuss the aspects where Vivo excel at and the other aspect the
company is criticized for.
2.1 One aspect the company excels at
Few smartphones get sold for their price offers that surpass other brands in the aspect. On
the other hand, few phones are loved for their overall quality performance or something else.
Vivo phones are currently one of the top-selling phone brands worldwide. Vivo was at fourth
place in 2018 in terms of sales behind only to Samsung, Apple and Huawei (Vox.com 2020).
Many of Vivo phones look beautiful and are decent in performance. However, the one standout
feature that makes it look different from other android phones is the camera. Vivo V17, for
example, takes great shots like a pro with its powerful in-built quad-camera. This Vivo phone
comes with a Super AMOLED display that brings vibrant colors to life. Moreover, it makes
photo shooting and video recording a great experience for users. According to a report, the 32MP

front camera can produce clear and detailed images. The powerful quad rear camera works better
even in low-light conditions. The cameras are light-sensitive and therefore guarantee great
pictures in all lighting conditions (Financialexpress.com 2020).
The camera quality is an aspect to judge the brilliance of phones because there are
limiting factors, which can be used to compare phones and identify the best of them. There are
obvious quality differences between the software used for Apple’s iPhones and Android phones.
However, it would not be fair to say that the software is also a standout feature of android
phones. Instead, android phones are very much alike for the software and processing power.
More specifically android phones are left with cameras, the one area where they can show
their potentials (Billbennett.co.nz 2020). This is the reason why android phone makers put so
much emphasis on the camera quality.
Despite the growing emphasis of smartphone makers on the camera, phone cameras still
lag to professional cameras and a digital SLR. Camera phones are easy to carry as compared to
professional cameras, the only thing that makes people obsessed with them. There are still many
areas to improve. This includes more use of innovation in the software and of course a better
user interface to support faster navigation through camera settings. Vivo by doing well in the
recommended areas will have more opportunities to prove its potentials in camera quality.
2.2 Another aspect the company excels at
The screen display is another area where Vivo excels at. Vivo V17, for example, comes
with an excellent AMOLED panel. It offers good viewing angles and the hole is not also
distracting. The colors are very punchy give an experience very much similar to that of the

Samsung Galaxy S10. It means the photos will look brighter and vibrant. Those who love a
vibrant display will love to have this phone (Gadgets.ndtv.com 2020). AMOLED display
unarguably gives the best viewing experience. Those who are active users of Instagram and are
concerned with the display, they should give Vivo phones a try. It is because an AMOLED
display makes the Instagram images pop. Since many Vivo phones come with great AMOLED
screen, they are perfect for watching movies and playing the graphics-intensive video games.
AMOLED screen gives users deeper contrasts and more vivid colors than the IPS LCD screen
(Mensxp.com 2020).
Battery life has long remained a challenge for smartphone makers. They struggled with
producing phones that could perform excellently well in terms of battery life. Phone batteries can
be blamed for the phone's display. The phone display consumes more batteries than any other
feature on a phone. An AMOLED display is the most appropriate answer to this problem as
every independent pixel in such a display produces light. A black pixel is just kept off in an
AMOLED display. It, therefore, consumes very limited or perhaps no power at all. It can be said
that an AMOLED display implies better battery backup. Undeniably, the phone display quality
defines its entertaining value. While watching videos, taking photo shots and playing a game
there is no delight if the phone display is not the best in the same price segment (Mensxp.com
2020).
Vivo offers excellent phones in terms of the quality of display; however, there are still a
few areas where serious improvement is needed. One of these is the selection of “Processor” that
is questionable for a fact it has not improved from its predecessors. The processor produces the
same performance as the Vivo U20 priced far much lesser from Vivo V17. Vivo lags noticeably
behind its competitors like Redmi in terms of processor. At the same price, Redmi offers a

comparatively more powerful processor, which delivers an excellent experience overall
(Gadgets.ndtv.com 2020). Vivo phones appear slightly overpriced especially when its highly
anticipated phone models lag in terms of powerful performance. Pricing shouldn’t be an issue
provided if they manage the product positioning smartly.
2.3 One aspects that the company is criticized for
Vivo phones have been effectively positioned in the market as a result of the supreme
quality camera sensors (Silva et al. 2016). The phones that are offered by the company have
gained immense popularity as a result of the cameras that the Vivo smartphones come with. The
smartphones, however, cannot be considered to be coupled with stock android experiences. This
implies that there have been some tweaks that have been made to the Android operating system
which has originally been developed by Google Inc. (Yannes and Tyson 2019). The company
has effectively marketed its core competency in the form of the camera that the phones come
with; however, a lapse has been witnessed in the form of an ineffective operating system. The
company has failed to realize the importance of a snappy and smooth operating system. The
operating system that is used by Vivo is known as FunTouchOS. The operating system is an
Android-based operating system that is coupled with some tweaks that have been made by Vivo.
The Operating System that is used by the company is not stock as it has been tweaked and
altered. Hence, a problem has been identified in the form of slow and minimal updates. It has
been witnessed that the company has been negligent in terms of paying due attention to
providing timely updates OTA (Over The Air) to the Vivo phones. Hence, customers have to
wait for ages before they receive updates that help them stay at par with the rest of the
smartphone users.

3. Conclusion and recommendations
On a concluding note, it can be said that both Vivo has its positive and negative areas.
Vivo offers great quality camera phones, which is fairly suitable for those who love
entertainment on the phone. The entertainment is enhanced with its AMOLED display screens.
However, it performs not so well in terms of processing power. A not so good for powerful
performance Vivo may not be the best choice for those who want fast actions and smooth
gaming experience. Vivo should also improve in terms of its user interface to support quicker
and smoother navigation through its camera settings. Moreover, there is no frequent update for
android, which can slow down the phone performance.
Recommendations
Improved Performance: The use of powerful processors can help to perform better. If a
phone is priced higher, it should justify the pricing from every aspect. The quality of the camera,
the screen display and the overall performance of the phone should all be up to the mark.
Easy and Beautiful User Interface: The user interface needs improvement. Camera
features should be appropriately positioned and effectively defined to make it easily detectable
and fast to use the camera for the customer.
Frequent Update for Android is needed: Vivo does not use an android platform in true
sense. It rather uses “Funtouch OS”, an operating system created by the company. It is one of the
most widely used operating systems globally. Vivo provides regular updates to its users;

however, that does not happen at similar pace like on Android phones. Slow updates affect the
performance. Vivo should pay attention to factors that affect the performance of its phones.
