Introduction:
The retail store has been a significant contributor to the annual GDP of any country
and it is visible from the fact that in the year 2016 10 % of the total GDP of India was
contributed by the retail industry (Ibef.org 2018). So, the retail industry deserves the attention
of the researchers and scholars. Walmart is considerably the leader in the retail industry
currently. However, several literary works have cited that the local retailers suffer when
Walmart enters their geographical domain. The devised paper will contribute to the discussed
topic and will evaluate the impact that major retail organisation cites on the small retailers.
The objective of the paper will be achieved by analysing the impact of Walmart on the Indian
retailers.
Organisation:
The subject of the research is Walmart Inc., an American retail MNC (multinational
corporation). The company was established in 1962 by Sam Walton and is headquartered in
Bentonville, Arkansas and was incorporated in the year 1969 (Our History 2018). The
deemed organisation owns 11,718 stores in 28 countries as dated on 31st January 2018 (About
Us 2018). The organisation operates by the name of Asda in the UK (Walmart acquired Asda
Stores Ltd.in 1999) ("Our History - ASDA Corporate" 2018). The organisation employees
over 2.3 million globally which is the most by any private organisation. Currently, the
company serves around 26 billion members and customers in a week at little higher than
11000 stores under various collaboration and banners, and its sales figure have crossed $482
billion marks (About Us 2018). The deemed organisation is a leader in sustainability,
corporate philanthropy and employment opportunity (Bertrand et al. 2018). Stankevičiūtė,
Grunda and Bartkus (2012) in their published article have put an effort to determine the
strategic plans of the Walmart. The primary focus of the article has been laid on the business

decision making of the organisation and how it had assessed them in earning a cost leadership
globally in the retail industry. It can be evaluated from various other resources that the
organisation offers the requirement of the consumers at a price that no others retailing service
can, to earn cost leadership and hence competitive advantage in the market.

that inspired from it I can develop a strategy that is ethically and commercially beneficial.
Why it is important?
As I mentioned above that Walmart is one of the world’s leading retail giant with
good experience which enables me to look at the success of Walmart that how he was being
able to took challenges and the ways Walmart by which it mitigates those challenges.

LITERATURE REVIEW
Impact of Walmart on Small towns and bigger towns
Wolff-Mann (2015) in the article published in the time.com cites the impact that
Walmart has in the small towns. The article suggests that the economy of the town which
Walmart steps in gets thrown in commotion. The reason associated with the above mentioned
claim was the low prices offered by the retail giant. The article has also cited the example of
30% drop in the sales of a 44-year old store after the retail giant entered the town along with
several other examples as evidence to the theme of the article. It has even claimed that, if the

retailing giant closes its operations in the smaller towns, than the results may be devastating
for the town. The reason for the claims is that the Walmart made the things that were not
readily available in the market available in the town and now for the same things the

article remained unclear. The unclear motivation of the article here refers to the fact that the
article has not supported any particular claim and have taken both the aspects which may
cloud the understanding of readers who are not clear about the idea of management and its

Ficanco (2013) in the published article has attempted at evaluating whether the effect

small quantities they don’t accept the concept of supermarket retail shops. They tend to buy
fresh foods only. Japanese people prefer luxury goods and Wal-Mart was not able to cater the
high segment of the market (Balsas 2017). There are big number of small suppliers in Japan
who caters the limited number of retailers because of this the suppliers and retailers have
developed trust and build up a strong relationship between each other. In Japan waste
management is very costly and they are very concerned about their environment which is
another reason for them not to buy in bulk. In Japan the large store ‘one-stop shopping’
supermarket format like in UK and EU is not acceptable and will be a never preferred way
for grocery shopping in Japan. Japanese people like convenience but for the convenience
have different meaning contrary to UK and EU.
When entering the German market Wal-Mart was forced to purchase to relatively
weak chains, Interspar and Wertkauf, which included various size of stores. After these
acquisitions Wal-Mart was at 11th place in Germany amongst supermarket retail stores (Burke
2017). In Germany the German food market is highly concentrated so, the top five retail
stores account for nearly 80% of overall sale in Germany. Hence, Wal-Mart started from
relatively feeble position. In Germany Wal-Mart was unable to ‘get to sale’ and its inability
to exercise its network power made the situation worse for Wal-Mart to transfer the Anglo-
American model of lean in Germany.
Walmart’s entry in Indian retail market:
Bengale and Jadhav (2017) in their paper have focused on the challenges that the
Indian retailers faced on the arrival of the Walmart. The paper has taken reference of the

Walmart is having a mission ‘Saving people money so they can live better (Walmart
2015a). While its mission in India is to “Enable Small Business to prosper”

image which states that it kills small businesses as discussed in the literature review above.
Walmart joined hands with the Bharti group but their joint venture did not work out as
successful (Matusitz 2015). In 2013, Walmart takes complete control of the organisation and
in 2015, 20 stores were being operated by the name of Best Price.
These articles are reviewing that Walmart’s presence has a catastrophic result on the
smaller retailers and above mentioned statement supports my hypothesis that Walmart is a
retail giant and retail bully. As it is observed that Walmart is enjoying the benefits of its
monetary dominance in market globally and making difficulty for others to survive in the
market. The monetary dominance in the deemed scenario means the cost efficient products

number of people to whom I have selected as a participant. The students I have selected are
Indians and all student ages lack between 22-25years. The reason for the selection is based on
the fact that they are Indians and are aware of the situation of the small retailers in India.
Additionally, they can understand their needs and depending upon it, the responses from
them would be most reliable and associable. Sampling procedures are generally categorised
in two categories namely, likelihood and non-likelihood sampling. The likelihood testing
offers a sense of equality to all the associated participants while non-likelihood differentiates
on the basis of the importance and designation of the respondents (Novikov and Novikov
2013). The discrimination is considered in the non-likelihood procedure because the findings
from different people may be of different vitality depending on the base of the objective
(Morstatter et al.2013). The deemed research will adopt both the sampling methods to assist
in the proposed research work.
Data collection procedure:
The data collection procedure is categorised in two categories namely primary and the
secondary data (Eaton 2013). The paper will adopt both the methods for the collection of the
data of which the secondary data will be used to develop a platform to attain the research
objectives (Mertens 2014). The platform will be based on the findings that the researchers
and scholars have evaluated in their research works. The paper will also consider the primary
data where both the quantitative and qualitative data will be collected. The secondary data
will be collected from the literature review while interviews and surveys will be conducted to
collect the qualitative and quantitative data. The face-to-face communication will be done for
interview purposes while an online survey form will be developed to collect the quantitative
data. The questionnaire will be distributed among the small retailers in India to collect the
necessary quantitative data.

The primary qualitative data collected from the findings will be analysed through critical
thinking along with comparison and contrast with available secondary data. The primary
qualitative data will be the data which will be collected from the interviews. The secondary

Walmart in India is not successful because we have other options which are better than
Walmart because they have far more varieties of products and the price suits our budget.
Walmart deals more in frozen products so most people prefer not to buy from Walmart and
they from local markets and from nearby Indian stores. Most preferred stores in India are
Easyday, big bazar, spencer’s which deals in almost every product of day to day life at very
reasonable price. They deal in groceries, vegetable and electronics, so people prefer to go to
these shops every day to day need and on Wednesday they provide great deals on almost
every product in their store.

2-Diksha said that ‘Walmart tries to help out to customers providing with their best services’.
3-Arjun said that ‘Nice service but still can improve’.
4-Agin said that ‘They have good return policy if you think to change the products according
to their terms and conditions’.
5-Bhisham said that ‘They ask for suggestions from the customers after shopping so that they
can improve it’.
Final commentary:
As we can understand from the above table and reason for good and for normal, it’s obvious
that Walmart is lacking behind in terms of customer satisfaction and Walmart have to

improve a lot looking at the customers suggestion such as proper labelling of product
category, self-billing services , free home delivery services, should open more stores in more
areas. So, it shows that Walmart in India is not much successful as they are trading in
different country’s so, they have to make lots of improvement.
Interview analysis:
I have interviewed three students for my analysis. Their names are Lovely
Yadav(M.B.A), Ravi Yadav(M.B.A) and Lilu Kuchhadiya(M.S.C). So, I have asked them
four questions and their responses are:
Q1- Why are you shopping at local shops rather than Best Price(Walmart) in India ?
Lovely stated that ‘Well in my family my mother do all the shopping for vegetables
and groceries. So, where ever she ask me to take her for shopping I have to follow her
instructions. But I know about best price store, there is one near my house , I took my
mother there once she did not like their frozen food concept and told me that she buy
much fresh food from local market’.

Ravi stated that ‘I am buying groceries products from the local shops because he is
buying from them for last 5 years and he have faith in them that they will provide
them with the best quality products and prices suits their budget’.

Q2- Why do you prefer fresh food rather than frozen one ?
Lovely stated that ‘I don’t make choice between fresh and frozen food, my mother
does and she prefer buying fresh food’.
Ravi stated that ‘I am buying fruits and vegetable from the local farmer’s market
because I get fresh foods and these fresh foods are so hygienic for health’.
Q3- What do you think about their Walmart prices ?
Lovely stated that ‘I told you that I don’t buy groceries and vegetables so , I cannot
comment on that but I have seen some of the products prices are reasonable and also
heard that their prices are higher than their competitors for some of the products’.
Ravi stated that ‘I found the prices are bit higher than the local and other retailors’.
